Barbara Bell, Girl Scout leader; owned library cataloging firm

Barbara H. "Bobbe" Bell, the president of a family-owned and -operated library cataloging supply company in Alexandria and an active Girl Scout leader, died Tuesday at her home after a brief illness.

The Grants Lick resident was 66.

She grew up in West Virginia and graduated valedictorian of her high school class. In 1949, she went to college at West Virginia University, where she studied physics.

In 1951, she married Gordon W. Bell, and had three children.

Mr. Bell, a military man and a chemist, was frequently transferred from town to town. The family lived in West Virginia; Colorado; Niagara Falls, N.Y.; Illinois and Tennessee before settling in Grants Lick in 1971.

In 1972, Mr. Bell started his own company, Medialog Inc., and became the sole proprietor in 1973. The Alexandria company specializes in producing cataloging information systems and supplies for schools and public libraries.

Mrs. Bell enjoyed helping run the family business as a library cataloger and production worker, said a daughter, Becky Bell of Grants Lick. When her husband died in 1988, Mrs. Bell became the president.

In 1991, Mrs. Bell's three children were all working for the company. Since then, it has grown from 10 employees to 30, Becky Bell said, and the family is getting ready to build a new facility.

Mrs. Bell also was a past president of the Licking Valley Girl Scout Council and a talented musician.

"She was semi-retired lately, but Mom was extremely involved in her other organizations," Becky Bell said. "She has worked with the Girl Scouts here and in other communities for 40 years.

"She was a troop leader of all kinds, she did scout training, all kinds of funding - just about every hat, she's worn with them."

Mrs. Bell was an organist for 23 years at Florence Christian Church, and she was a 25-year member of the Cincinnati May Festival Chorus, a distinguished chamber choir. She also was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Fort Thomas.

Other survivors include sons, Jim Bell of Persimmon Grove and Dan Bell of Alexandria; a sister, Mrs. Gilbert Bachmann of Wheeling, W.Va.; and three grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Florence Christian Church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick. Memorials are suggested to Florence Christian Church, 300 Main St., Florence, Ky. 41042; the Bobbe Bell Scholarship Fund of Licking Valley Girl Scout Council, 607 Watson Road, Erlanger, Ky. 41018; Cincinnati May Festival Chorus, 1241 Elm St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45210; or to charity.
