Martha E. Pennington: Her priority was family

Martha E. Pennington helped run a grocery store, cooked in a school cafeteria and cleaned equipment at a pie factory.

But her first priority was her family, said a daughter, Mary Lou Cox of Burlington.

Mrs. Pennington and her husband, James, often worked together.

"She helped him all through their life," said Ms. Cox. "They were side by side on most of the jobs they had."

And Ms. Cox said her mother delighted in her seven daughters, 30 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

"She loved to go visit her children. She loved to have the children around her."

Mrs. Pennington, 84, of Crescent Springs, died Wednesday afternoon at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Mrs. Pennington was a native of Jackson County.

While rearing her children, Mrs. Pennington and her husband cleaned equipment at a pie factory called Tasty Foods in Burlington.

After 13 years with Tasty Foods, she took a job cooking and washing dishes at Conner Middle School in Hebron. Meanwhile, her husband was selling vegetables at a small roadside stand.

The couple subsequently opened Pennington's Market in Hebron - first on North Bend Road, then on what is now Petersburg Road.

The market closed after James Pennington died in 1981. The Penningtons had been married 47 years.

"It takes two people to stay together," Ms. Cox said of her parents' successful marriage.

"Mom was very religious. She never drank; she never smoked. She was just a good person. She treated everybody well."

Other survivors include daughters, Diana Mullins of Burlington, Betty Buckler of Elsmere, Geri Harden and Fay Brann, both of Crescent Springs, Sylvia Bell of Commiskey, Ind., and Lois York of Covington.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery.
