J. Robert West, Florence dentist

Dr. J. Robert West, one of the first dentists in Florence, died at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was 73.

Dr. West operated his own practice in the West Building on Main Street, next to the old Denham's drug store, until he retired in 1993. He bought the building several years after he graduated from dental school at the University of Louisville in the early 1950s.

"When he came here, Florence was a little, bitty town. There was a hardware store and a grocery store and not much else," said his sister, Mary Florence Jackson of Signal Mountain, Tenn.

Dr. West grew up in Pineville and went into the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he married Joanna Kinman West and did his pre-medical training at Union College in Barbourville. The couple moved to Florence and had two sons.

Dr. West started his practice in the early 1950s, renting rooms and working out of garages.

"He worked on me, and my fillings that he put in at least 40 years ago . . . have never needed any work. My dentist said it is wonderful work," Mrs. Jackson said.

Dr. West was involved in civic affairs in Florence, having been a city councilman in the 1950s and a former Boone County constable.

He also was a member of Florence Christian Church; the National Rifle Association; Burlington Lodge No. 264 F&AM, where he was a former master; Indra-Consistory Scottish Rite; Elks Lodge No. 51 in Springfield, Ohio; and the Syrian Shrine.

An Eagle Scout in his youth, Dr. West loved adventure and often went exploring, his sister said. He was an avid trap shooter and won many awards for his shooting skills.

He also was a generous man who routinely did dental work for free on patients who could not pay, she said.

"He did a lot of good things, but he did them quietly," Mrs. Jackson said. "He never wanted everyone to know."

Mr. West's wife, Joanna, died in 1993.

Other survivors include sons, James Robert West Jr. and John Dean West, both of Hebron; and three grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. tonight at Stith Funeral Home, Florence, with Masonic services afterward. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. The body will be cremated. Memorials are suggested to Shriners Burns Institute, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229.
