Kenneth Stuempel, Hall of Fame coach

Kenneth R. Stuempel, known to some as "Coach Ken," wasn't forgotten by the youngsters he encountered as a youth football coach.

"You were a key person among those who touched my life," Air Force Lt. Col. George Abernathy wrote Mr. Stuempel.

Mr. Stuempel, 56, of Erlanger, died Saturday in the St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington, of cancer. He was a retired insulator with Asbestos Workers Union Local No. 8, Cincinnati.

Mr. Stuempel helped organize the Boone County Pee Wee Football League, and coached a number of teams over the years, his wife, Patricia, said. "He spent a lot of time with the kids. He had many letters from former players telling him they appreciated what he had done for them," she said.

Abernathy of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, was among them. He men tioned how Mr. Stuempel encouraged him, and helped build his confidence.

Mr. Stuempel was a member of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame, in recognition of his work with youthful football players.

A graduate of Newport High School, where he participated in athletics, Mr. Stuempel attended Georgetown College in his youth, but had to drop out, his wife said. Later in life he returned to school, at Northern Kentucky University, and earned a degree.

"He realized his dream," said Mrs. Stuempel.

Mr. Stuempel also coached freshman football at Lloyd Memorial, Ludlow and Ryle high schools. He played baseball in his younger years, and was a former member of the Erlanger Lions.

"He was just very good with kids, including mine. He was very, very close to them," said Mrs. Stuempel.
