Hazel M. Reik, "full-time' Reds fan

During baseball season, Hazel M. Reik was a fixture in the press room overlooking Riverfront Stadium. But she wasn't a reporter.

She was the mother of William J. Reik, a limited partner of the Cincinnati Reds. She dressed in red before every home game and listened to sports radio whenever the team played out of town.

"A Cincinnati Reds fan - that's what she did full-time," said Reik, of New York City, in a telephone interview Monday from his room at the Quality Hotel Riverview in Covington. "She never missed a home game until she got ill."

Mrs. Reik, a lifelong Fort Thomas resident, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was 86.

Reik said his mother watched the Reds long before he became part-owner in 1985. When he did, he could count on her to be at every game and, when he was out of town and could not get a game on the radio, Mrs. Reik would put the telephone to the radio to let him hear.

"My dad always loved them (the Reds), she loved them, and it was fun for her," said Reik, Mrs. Reik's only son and the director of Frisch's restaurants.

Besides being a professional fan, Mrs. Reik was a homemaker and a long-time volunteer at St. Luke Hospital East. Her husband, William J. Reik, preceded her in death.

Other survivors include a grandson and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042, or St. Luke Hospital East, 85 N. Grand Ave., Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Accountant A. Leslie Brewster, devoted to family

A. Leslie Brewster was an accountant, World War II veteran and community service leader.

He was meticulous in his habits, raised his children to be close and wasn't afraid to speak his mind.

A son, Robert Brewster of Alexandria, is the executive director of the Brighton Center community service agency that provides job training, housing, emergency services and food to many people and children in Northern Kentucky.

Robert Brewster said he acquired much of his compassion - and speaking ability - from his father.

"Dad was real involved in his community and his church. He came out of the Second World War and raised his family. He taught all his children to become involved in their communities," Robert Brewster said.

Mr. Brewster, 80, of Fort Thomas, died at 3 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

He was a retired accountant with Avco Corp., Cincinnati, chairman of the building committee of St. Catherine of Siena Church, Fort Thomas, and helped organize the first Boy Scout troop in Campbell County.

Mr. Brewster was a native of Michigan who met his wife-to-be while attending the University of Cincinnati.

The couple married while Mr. Brewster was on a weekend pass from the U.S. Army Air Corps, their son said. They then made their home in Northern Kentucky.

"He was a really good person. He liked to work around the house and in his yard. He and mom were really focused on their family," Robert Brewster said.

Mr. Brewster died Nov. 23 - the same day his father, Frederick A. Brewster, died in 1941.

Other survivors include his wife, Ruth Koenig Brewster; daughters, Linda Rice of Murfeesboro, Tenn., and Pamela Collar of Toledo, Ohio; son William Brewster of Cincinnati; and four grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Passionist Nuns, 1151 Donaldson Road, Erlanger, Ky. 41018. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.
