Rev. Roy Gabbard, founded church, wrote gospel songs

The Rev. Roy Gabbard lived for God.

"He loved the Lord more than religion or any organization," said a son, Adrian Gabbard of Butler. "He just loved the gospel of Jesus and raised all of us the same way. He was a great man, a great father, a great husband and a great spiritual leader."

Rev. Gabbard began his ministry in 1963 by founding the Gabbard Evangelistic Association, a non-profit Pentecostal organization.

In December 1965, he founded the Gabbard Tabernacle, which the congregation named in his honor because the building was built entirely by Rev. Gabbard and two of his sons. The church is pastored by his sons, Gary and Paul, and is expanding to southern Campbell County.

In 1970, Rev. Gabbard decided to start an outreach ministry in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood and founded the Uptown Church. His sons, Keith and Adrian, pastor that church.

Rev. Gabbard wrote "What God Hath Wrought In My Life" and wrote several gospel songs. His song, "On Bended Knees," reached No. 30 on the National Southern Gospel Radio charts in 1992 and was the first hit for the Gabbards, a regional singing group consisting of several of Rev. Gabbard's children and a granddaughter. The Gabbards travel regularly to minister throughout the Midwest and eastern United States.
