Thomas J. Roderick, banker and Navy vet, loved to swim

Thomas J. Roderick, who spent 33 years working his way up from mail-room clerk to bank manager at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cincinnati, died of a heart attack Friday.

Mr. Roderick, 63, a lifelong resident of Fort Thomas, spent his work career at the Federal Reserve Bank and had been named manager of the bank's check collection department.

Family members recalled Mr. Roderick as someone who enjoyed a good laugh, had a keen interest in local sports teams and often watched sports with his three brothers: Lawrence of Bellevue, Robert of Fort Thomas and Patrick of Dayton.

'We were all close and liked to get together all the time,' said Robert Roderick, 57.

After joining the Federal Reserve Bank out of high school, Mr. Roderick left to serve in the Navy during the Korean War years.

Although he did not see any combat, he was involved in a car accident that left him disabled.

During his retirement, Mr. Roderick became a fixture at the swimming pool at the Campbell County YMCA.

He often swam more than three hours a day.

A son, Anthony Roderick of Wilder, who also went into banking, said his father had a strong sense of determination for getting ahead in his profession.

Mr. Roderick was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Catholic Order of Foresters St. Stephen Court No. 1380. A son, Kenneth, preceded him in death.

Other survivors include his wife, Nancy; a daughter, Deborah Ballard of Louisville; sons, Thomas Roderick of Wilder and Vincent Roderick of Fort Thomas; and three grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Therese Church, Southgate.

Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

William Rettig depended on God, lived with courage

William G. Rettig, who worked as a senior accountant with Bethesda Oak Hospital in Cincinnati before his 10-year battle with brain cancer, died at 2:30 a.m. Monday at St. Charles Care Center in Fort Wright.

The Fort Wright resident was 43.

Mr. Rettig was diagnosed with a brain tumor in March 1989, while working at Bethesda Oak. Most of his final years were spent living with his parents, George and Dolores Rettig, in their Fort Wright home.

As his illness worsened, he turned to God. He attended church daily, or whenever he was well, and prayed constantly.

'When Bill lost his ability to converse, the only thing he could say was "Jesus Loves,' and that's what people will remember him by,' Dolores Rettig said.

'He was a very gentle person. He never complained about his illness.'

Mr. Rettig grew up in Fort Wright, and graduated from Covington Catholic High School in 1972.

He earned a bachelor of arts degree in accounting from Northern Kentucky University in 1977, and later earned his master's degree in finance from Xavier University.

'Fellow students who knew him best said he was noted for his tenacity and determination in academics, which later carried over to his relationship with God,' said his sister, Donna Meier of Crescent Springs.

After earning his bachelor's degree, he was hired by Touche-Ross, at the time a Big Eight accounting firm and nationally known. He also worked as an accountant with SuperX Drugs.

His final work was with Bethesda Oak.

Mr. Rettig was a talented pianist who also enjoyed baseball, basketball and running.

He did not have any children of his own, but for six years, he was a foster parent of a boy in Guatemala, and previously was foster parent of a Columbian boy.

He also was active in the Big Brother program.

'I think that what was important about Bill wasn't that he was an educated man or that he had many accomplishments, but that he cared about people, more than possessions,' said Mr. Rettig's brother, Jim Rettig of Erlanger.

Other survivors include his father and sister, Nancy Rettig of Redondo Beach, Calif.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will be from 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Saturday at the church.

A prayer service with shared rememberances will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Mr. Rettig donated his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials are suggested to St. Charles Care Center, 500 Farrell Drive, Fort Wright, Ky., 41011; or the charity of the donor's choice. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
