Fred Rae 'Dutch' Baker, 97, of Owenton, died Sunday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. He was a farmer and a member of Long Ridge Baptist Church, Owen County. His wife, Grace Skirvin Baker, preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughters, Elvessie Kathy Landram and Sue Carol Redmond, both of Owenton; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McDonald Funeral Home, Seminary Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton. Memorials are suggested to B&J Apartments Recreation Room Fund, Owenton, Ky., 40359; or Long Ridge Baptist Church, Sparta Road, Owenton, Ky., 40359.

Shirley Bryant-Hamilton, 56, Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.

Survivors include daughters, Denise Taylor and Stephanie Ewing, both of Cincinnati; a son, Lynn Hamilton of Cincinnati; sisters, Mary Jones and Margie Thompson, both of Cincinnati, and Regina Marshall and Bernice Hatcher, both of Newark, N.J.; a brother, Charles Ross of Plainfield, N.J.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7:30 p.m. today at New St. Paul Baptist Church, Cincinnati. Visitation will begin there at 5:30 p.m. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Baltimore Pike Cemetery, Cincinnati. Joseph R. Garr Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.

Lorraine Moore Conrad, 68, of Falmouth, died Monday at her home. She was a retired insurance agent, an employee of the Wal-mart in Alexandria, and a member of Trinity Southern Baptist Church in Falmouth. Her husband, Marvin Conrad, died in 1996.

Survivors include a son, Stephen Conrad of Butler; daughters, Lynn Stidham of Lexington and Denise Bobb of Falmouth; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Southern Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth, and from 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of services at the church. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Southern Baptist Church, 309 E. Shelby St., Falmouth, Ky., 41040.

Elizabeth B. Franklin, 95, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died at 7:42 a.m. Monday at Columbia Health Care Center in Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. Her husband, William S. Franklin, died in 1968.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Mullins of Covington.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

John J. Griess, 71, of Newport, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was an employee of Universal Concrete Products Co.

Survivors include a sister, Mildred L. Griess of Independence.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Mary Alyce Heiert, 83, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Clarence Heiert, died in 1975.

Survivors include daughters, Mary J. Boch of Bellevue and Maureen Emory of Weaverville, N.C.; sons, John Heiert of Conway, S.C., and Ralph Heiert of Goshen, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. today at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Holly Hill Children's Home, Summer Hill Road, California, Ky., 41007.

Edward Earl Hubbard, 68, of Crittenden, died Saturday at his home. The Army veteran was a retired tool and die maker with Andrews Machine Shop and a member of the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include a son, Tim Hubbard of Florence; a daughter, Sherry Milburn of Sterling, Va.; stepsons, Rick Feltner of Lebanon, Ohio, and Ronnie Feltner of Cincinnati; sisters, Alice Smith of Manchester, Betty Gersper of Independence and Irene Tanner of Morning View; brothers, James Hubbard of Williamstown, Lawrence Hubbard of Union, Sam Hubbard of Lake Okeechobee, Fla., Johnny Hubbard of Morning View and Charley Hubbard of Erlanger; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at noon Wednesday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Jacob Jump, 14, of Ellenwood, Ga., died Dec. 8 at Eggleston Children's Hospital in Atlanta. He was a freshman at Morrow, Ga., High School.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Jump Jr. of Ellenwood, Ga.; his mother, Yvette Jump of Cincinnati; sisters, Christina Chandler and Kayci Graman, both of Cincinnati; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Jump Sr. of Crittenden and Mr. and Bob and Hazel Erickson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and great-grandmothers, Florence Beagle and Jody Smith, both of Kentucky.

Services were Saturday at Pope Dickson and Son Funeral Home, Morrow, Ga. Burial was in Sherwood Cemetery, Morrow.

Arthur E. Kersten, 71, of Dayton, died Dec. 3 at Mercy Fairfield Hospital, Fairfield, Ohio. He was an accountant.

Survivors include daughters, Connie Kappes of Cincinnati and Jan Johnson of Simi Valley, Calif.; a brother, Herman 'Jim' Kersten of Crestview Hills; six grandchildren and one great- grandchild.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Dayton Bellevue Christian Church, Dayton. Mr. Kersten donated his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials are suggested to Big Stef Inc., P. O. Box 1844, Newport, Ky., 41071.

James E. Lewis, 74, of Santa Ana, Calif., formerly of Augusta, died Dec. 8 at Western Medical Hospital in Santa Ana. He was retired from the Navy. His wife, Doris Lewis, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Paula Davenport of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; brothers, Leslie Lewis and Bert Lewis, both of Cincinnati, and Reynolds Lewis of Goldsboro, N.C.; sisters, Della Brook, Ada Jean Lewis and Alma Davis, all of Cincinnati; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Edna Ruth Heekin Ulsas Maines, 88, of Newport, died Thursday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. She was a retired ward secretary with Booth Hospital in Covington, and a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Bellevue, and Senior Citizens of Dayton. Her first husband, George Robert Ulsas, died in 1953. Her second husband, Clarence Maines, died in 1977. A stepson, Raymond Maines, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Edward Ulsas of Bellevue; stepsons, Charles Maines of Bellevue, Robert Maines of California, Clarence Maines Jr. of Taylor Mill and Don Maines, Richard Maines and Irvin Maines, all of Dayton; stepdaughters, Florence Seiver of Burnside and Mary Andrews of Texas ; three granddaughters, five great-grandchildren, and many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m., Jan. 10, at St. John United Church of Christ, Bellevue. Mrs. Maines donated her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials are suggested to St. John United Church of Christ of Christ, Ward and Fairfield, Bellevue, Ky., 41073; or Baptist Convalescent Center, 120 Main St., Newport, Ky., 41071.

Flossie Newsom, 96, of Independence, died at 11:40 a.m. Sunday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church, Taylor Mill. Her husband, Paul Newsom, died in 1982.

Survivors include a son, Don Newsom of Independence; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Oak Ridge Baptist Church. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Grace L. Reece, 78, of Ghent, died Sunday at her home. She was a retired owner of Backwoods Barbecue, Ghent, and was active in supporting the Carroll County Humane Society. Sons, William Coy Reece and Jackie Wayne Reece, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Wanda Brantley of Dublin, Ga., and Patsy Wilson of Ghent; a son, Jim Reece of House Springs, Mo.; several brothers and sisters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Warsaw Cemetery. Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton, is handling arrangements.

Catherine Haverkamp Scahill, 89, of Bellevue, died Sunday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue. She was a member of the Knights of St. John's Auxiliary and was active in the Mother's Club of Sacred Heart Church. Her husband, Stanley Scahill, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a sister, Irma Gutfreund of Fort Thomas; and brothers, Albert Haverkamp of Highland Heights, John Haverkamp of Bellevue and Larry Haverkamp of Cincinnati.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Church, 318 Division St., Bellevue, Ky. 41073.

Freida May Caudill Young, 62, of Corbin, and formerly of Newport, died Sunday at the Baptist Regional Hospital in Corbin. Mrs. Young was a nurse's aide with St. Charles Nursing Care, Fort Wright, and attended Calvary Apostolic Church, Corbin.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Faye Wilson of Newport and Lola Mae Surgener of Savannah, Tenn.; a son, Harold Wayne Surgener of Corbin; sisters, Ruby Thomas of Covington and Arkie McIntire of Dry Ridge; brothers, Woodford Caudill of Booneville, A. C. Caudill of Independence and Oak Caudill of Latonia; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Charles Nursing Care Village, 500 Farrell Drive, Fort Wright, Ky., 41011.

Steelworker Golden Mills, "wonderful' dad

Golden Woodrow Mills grew up in West Virginia but found work and a wife in Northern Kentucky.

He joined the Army's 101st Airborne Division, based in Fort Campbell, and was discharged at a military base in Indiana after the war ended. Work was scarce, but he found a job at Interlake Steel - now Newport Steel - in Wilder.

Mr. Mills, 84, of Dry Ridge, died at 3:15 p.m. Monday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.

He worked in the steel mill for 30 years, pouring steel over the open hearth.

'It was hot,' but it was a job, said his son, William D. Mills of Elsmere.

The elder Mr. Mills lived in Covington at the time. He met his wife, Edna, in Northern Kentucky. After he retired, they moved to Grant County.

Mrs. Mills died in 1993.

In retirement, Mr. Mills tended his yard. He was a 'wonderful' dad, his son said.

'He was kind of quiet,' his son said. 'He wasn't too outgoing.'

Mr. Mills was a member of Pohlmann-Linnemann VFW Post No. 1484, Park Hills, and the Kentucky Sheriffs Association, although he was never a sheriff or deputy sheriff.

Other survivors include a brother, Harry Mills of Huntington, W.Va.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.

John G. Bales, 51, of Covington, died at 2:15 p.m. Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a roofer with Zero Breese Roofing Co., Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Bales; daughters, Sarah Bales of War, W.Va., Joanie Bales of Cincinnati; a brother, David Bales of Cincinnati; a sister, Rose Bales of Cincinnati; and one grandchild.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel. Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
