Wilbur F. Hindmarch, owned meat market

Wilbur F. Hindmarch, former owner of Hindmarch's Meats in Newport, died of an apparent heart attack at 8 a.m. Friday at his home in Highland Heights. He was 82.

Mr. Hindmarch was born in 1916 and grew up working in his father's store at Fourth and Columbia.

He learned meat cutting from his father and took over the business when his father died.

He served in the Army during World War II, working in the quartermaster's office to keep food supplies flowing to the troops.

'If it hadn't been for the war, he probably would have gone on to college and become a social studies teacher,' said his niece, Rosann Sharon, who teaches at Dayton High School.

He maintained a lifelong interest in history and social studies, she said.

Mr. Hindmarch never married, but he was an active presence in the lives of his sister's children.

'When we were growing up, he took us and all our friends to the away football games and basketball games,' Mrs. Sharon said.

He and his mother, Rose, ran Hindmarch Meats until the mid-1960s, when they sold the business and the buyer tore it down to build a car lot.

He worked as a meat cutter for several other companies.

'He was easy going and talkative. He always said you should treat everybody nicely. You don't have to agree with everything they say, but you should acknowledge them and listen to them,' Mrs. Sharon said.

Welder Charles "Red' Crawford, inspected Saturn 5 spacecraft

Physical adversity seemed to make Charles W. 'Red' Crawford stronger.

'He was a role model for others who faced adversity,' said his wife, Annette.

Mr. Crawford, 58, of Mays Lick, died Sunday morning at his home, after an extended illness.

Mr. Crawford had two kidney transplants, in 1970 and again in 1987, and two heart attacks and open heart surgery in 1992, his wife said.

After each medical problem he returned to work, in a variety of occupations which ranged from welder to cattle dealer.

At one point, Mr. Crawford gave up working with a plumber near his home and took a job welding heavy equipment at Eastern Kentucky strip mines, Mrs. Crawford said. 'Mentally it was challenging for him, and seemed to improve his health,' she said.

In more recent years, Mr. Crawford concluded that he knew something about cattle, from living for years on a farm, and began to buy, sell and transport cattle, Mrs. Crawford said. The occupation took him throughout Kentucky and Ohio, and to Florida and Kansas, she said.

A native of Mason County, Mr. Crawford owned a welding shop in Aberdeen, Ohio, even before he had a certificate to weld, his wife said. He went to school to master the trade, she said. 'He was gifted,' she added.

Mr. Crawford also worked as a welding inspector on the Saturn 5 rocket at Cape Canaveral, Fla., and on interstate highway projects in the Atlanta area.

'It was an exciting time to be at Cape Canaveral. He would be getting on or off a plane and pass Walter Cronkite, who was arriving or leaving,' Mrs. Crawford said.

'He was really proud of his inspection work on the highways,' she said.

She and her husband traveled extensively, to all but four of the United States, and owned a number of recreational boats over the years, Mrs. Crawford said.

Survivors include his wife, Annette Marshall Crawford; half-brothers, Ricky Crawford, Danny Crawford and Jimmy Crawford; and half-sisters, Judy and Susan . Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Shannon Cemetery, Mays Lick. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hope, 1 West McDonald Parkway, Maysville, Ky. 41056.
