James Bernard Johnson, 65, of Carrollton, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired rework line and quality control area worker with Teledyne Packaging Co., Carrollton, and a member of St. John Church in Carrollton. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include sons, Darrick Johnson of Carrollton, Michael Johnson of Highland Heights, James B. Johnson Jr. of Spring City, Tenn., Timmy Johnson and Jeff Johnson, both of Bardstown; daughters, Vicki Ballard of Cox's Creek and Catherine Sullivan of Louisville; a brother, J.C. Christine L. Welch Miller, 70, of Germantown, died Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Germantown Christian Church. Her husband, William Miller, died in 1977.

Donald Ray Webster, 69, of Independence, was found dead Tuesday in his truck in Walton. He was a retired supervisor with Owen County RECC and an Army veteran of the Korean War. A brother, Cecil Webster Jr., died Nov. 12.
Survivors include a son, Randy E. Webster of Walton; daughters, Connie Chasteen of Dry Ridge and Teresa Lynn Thomson of Walton; a sister, Betty Snyder of Cincinnati; brothers, Bill Webster of Butler and Edward Webster of Cincinnati; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Albert Thomas Zagorski, 45, of Independence, died Monday in Covington. He was a carpenter.

Dr. Carl Kumpe, biopsy pioneer
Dr. Carl Kumpe was the first doctor in the United States to perform a liver biopsy using a needle - a technique commonplace now.
Dr. Kumpe, 86, died of a heart attack at 6:23 p.m. Tuesday at his Fort Mitchell home.
He pioneered the biopsy procedure after World War II. The procedure was documented in the medical journal Gastroenterology in 1947, said his son-in-law, Dr. John Bossert.
Dr. Kumpe then gave up research to set up a private practice in Covington.
'I think he liked taking care of patients more than doing research,' Bossert said. 'He far more related to patients than the laboratory.'
He set up practice in 1947 at Seventh and Scott streets in Covington and worked until 1982, retiring at age 70.
Two nurses who knew Dr. Kumpe told his daughter, Susan Kumpe Bossert of Cincinnati, he got so involved in his patients' care he could recite what they had for breakfast.
'He followed people for years, so they became extended family,' Mrs. Bossert said.
Dr. Kumpe retired as a doctor of internal medicine. He specialized in digestive diseases before gastroenterology became a specialized practice, Dr. Bossert said.
Dr. Kumpe was a man of few words, his daughter said:
'He meant what he said. He was blunt-spoken, but it was truthful. He didn't have an opinion about everything. He wasn't that type, so when he spoke you listened and respected what he said.'
Dr. Kumpe was a member of First United Methodist Church in Covington, Masonic Lodge No. 109 F&AM, Royal Order of Jesters and Fort Mitchell Country Club. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. His wife, Ruth L. Kumpe, died in 1981.
Other survivors include a son, Dr. David Kumpe of Denver; sisters, Ruth Pasternak of Toledo, Ohio, Edna Miller of Maumee, Ohio, and Mary Southerland of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, Covington, with burial in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is in charge. Erby Brent McManis Bryant, 89, of Carrollton, died Wednesday at Green Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carrollton. She was a retired cafeteria cook with Carroll County High School; a former employee of U.S. Shoe in Vevay, Ind.; and a member of First Baptist Church of Carrollton.
Her husbands, Joe S. McManis and Jim Bryant, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Janet Darnold of Madison, Ind., and Frances Watkins of Carrollton; a son, Kenneth McManis of Parksley, Va.; brothers, Eugene C. Brent of Martinez, Ga., and Charles I. Brent of Campbellsburg; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

John Edward Cain Jr., 68, of Mount Carmel, Ohio, died Thursday at Anderson Mercy Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired industrial mechanic with Yale Equipment Co., Cincinnati.
