Marguerite Robinson gave to community, family

As an 18-year member of the Newport Housing Authority, Marguerite Robinson recognized a need among residents for a place to assemble, exercise and blow off steam.

She helped convince Newport officials to build a new community center and gymnasium, and helped keep the city focused on acquiring the funds to do it. When the center was opened in 1997 at Sixth and Patterson streets, it was named in her honor.

Mrs. Robinson died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. The Newport resident was 78.

Mrs. Robinson grew up in Cincinnati and attended Woodward High School. After marrying Leroy Robinson in 1948, the couple moved to Newport to be closer to Mr. Robinson's aunt.

While raising her two children, Mrs. Robinson earned extra money by cleaning people's homes. She eventually took a custodial position at Newport National Bank, where she worked for 28 years.

It was while she was working at the bank that she got to know Newport Housing Authority Chairman Leroy Hoffman in the late 1970s. He offered her a job - and she almost didn't take it because of her many family, community and church obligations.

Mrs. Robinson lived at a frantic pace.

Besides being a mother, wife and worker, she became a member of the Masonic group, Newport Chapter 105 Order of the Eastern Star, in 1962, and served in various leadership positions at the state and local levels.

Among her titles were: Illustrious Commandress of Aleikum Court 56 and Imperial Deputy of the Oasis of Kentucky.

A talented seamstress and fashion designer, Mrs. Robinson enjoyed running fashion shows and modeling in them for charitable events across the state.

She was a member of the Ralph M. Carter Assembly of the Golden Circle and St. James A.M.E. Church, both in Covington.

She also was a caregiver, and looked after her husband's aunt, mother and her own mother when they were ill. When an elderly friend needed a surrogate daughter to do the same, Mrs. Robinson stepped in.

'She was compassionate to our people,' Leroy Robinson said. 'If anybody needed help, she was always there.'

'She was very loving, very outgoing. She loved to have fun, she didn't meet a person she didn't like.'

Mrs. Robinson suffered from heart problems and was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease about two years ago.

Other survivors include a daughter, Jo Ann Harris of Cincinnati; a brother, Lucius Harris Jr. of Cincinnati; sisters, Dorothy Pearson and Lillian Cox, both of Cincinnati; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. James A.M.E. Church, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Monday, with fraternal services at noon.

Burial will be in Union Baptist Cemetery, Cincinnati. Jones & Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
