Leo Lawson, Boone legislator
Leo Lawson was the first Republican elected to office in Boone County in the 20th century, and perhaps ever.
Mr. Lawson, 93, of Covington, died Friday night in the Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.
'At times we were adversaries, but we ended up being friends. He was a most interesting guy,' said former Boone County Judge-Executive Bruce Ferguson, a Democrat.
Mr. Lawson served as a magistrate and member of the Boone County Fiscal Court in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and in the late 1960s was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives, recalled his daughter, Patti Dillard of Independence.
He served one term in Frankfort.
'He drove through the county, and he went door to door. He got people to talk with him and to listen to him,' she said.
Mr. Lawson also helped Republicans in other counties and helped Clyde Middleton in getting his start in Kenton County, Mrs. Dillard said.
Her father and mother moved to Florida during the winters beginning in the early 1970s, Mrs. Dillard said, but he kept his interest in politics. 'When he got back here in the spring the first thing he did was head for Burlington to see what had been going on,' she said.
Mr. Lawson was a retired pipe fitter and former co-owner of the Hebron Hardware Store. He also operated the Fountain Restaurant in Hebron. He and his family lost the restaurant and their home, which was on the second floor, to a fire, but later reopened, Mrs. Dillard said.
