"Dee' Ritter, pioneer in helping disabled

Delores 'Dee' Ritter dedicated 35 years to helping people who have mental retardation and their families.

Mrs. Ritter, 73, of Ludlow, died at 7 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

After Mrs. Ritter gave birth to a son with Down's syndrome, she began volunteering in the cafeteria of Mother of God Church in Covington, where handicapped children attended classes.

She started a thrift shop and organized festivals to benefit the children.

'She was one of the women who was trying to get the handi capped into regular schools and a place to live,' said her daughter, Katie Parrott of Fort Mitchell.

Mrs. Ritter was an active member of the Northern Kentucky Association for the Retarded since its inception in 1972.

In 1977 she volunteered to answer the phone for the association, and a year later she was hired as the group's first paid staff, working as secretary.

When the association was told in 1981 that it had to vacate its office on West Ninth Street in Covington because the building was being razed, Mrs. Ritter was instrumental in the search for a new location. She also organized a successful bingo to raise money to purchase a new building.

She was credited with building the association's membership rolls.

Even after she resigned in 1984, she continued to organize quarterly meetings of older parents with mentally retarded children to find out what assistance they needed.

'She felt that what she had done was a big contribution, but she also felt like she could have done more. But she ran out of time,' her daughter said.

Mrs. Ritter loved to make people laugh, even after she was at the hospice because of her cancer.

'She had a great personality,' her daughter said.

A son, Rudy Lucas, died in 1996.

Other survivors include her husband, Charles Ritter; sons, James Ritter of Ludlow and Phillip Lucas of Jacksonville, Fla.; stepsons, Larry Ritter of Florence and Steve Ritter of Texas ; stepdaughters, Mary J. Yancey of Pine Knot, Connie Dalton of Crittenden, and Beverly Aubrey of Covington; her mother, Loretta Millison of Florence; a sister, Virginia Molloy of Fort Thomas; two grandchildren, 24 step-grandchildren and 49 step-great-grandchildren.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to The Point, 43 W. Pike St., Covington, Ky. 41011, or St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014. Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.
