George "Robbie' Robinson, pitched for championship Air Force team

Although Michael Robinson played football for four years at the University of Kentucky, he says he took a back seat to his father, George 'Robbie' Robinson, when it came to athletics.

The elder Robinson died Monday at his home in Crestview. He was 67.

As a young man, Mr. Robinson played baseball for Jack Gatliff and the Yorkshire Club in Newport and was a pitcher on the Tachikawa Red Devils Air Force team that won the Far East Baseball Championship in 1955 and 1956.

'He hit a grand slam, pitched a no-hitter, hit a hole-in-one in golf and bowled a 300 game. He was proud of everything he did in athletics,' said Mike Robinson, who lives in Milford, Ohio.

At one point, Mr. Robinson, who grew up in the Covington area, was contacted by a major league baseball organization, his son said.

The elder Robinson was a right-handed pitcher known for his slow curve and knuckleball, his son said.

However, Mr. Robinson didn't pursue professional baseball because he wanted to take care of his family, his son said.

'He enjoyed playing ball, but he made up his mind to be a family man. He was proud of the fact he never regretted anything that he had done,' Mike Robinson said.

Mr. Robinson was a designer with Spaulding Lighting Co. in Cincinnati.

'He was a soft-spoken person. Anything for his professional career, he stayed with and finished it,' Mike Robinson said.

Mr. Robinson's daughter, Jacqueline Alford of Claryville, echoed her brother's comments.

'He taught us to be honest and caring children,' Mrs. Alford said. 'He loved life and his grandchildren. He was a good dad.'

Mr. Robinson was a member of Colonel Clay Masonic Lodge No. 159 and the Scottish Rite in Covington, a member of the Pendleton Country Club and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Other survivors include his wife, Helen Robinson; another son, Rob Robinson of Crestview; and four grandchildren.
