Juanita Herzog, loving mom, volunteer

Juanita Arnold Herzog gave back to her community in so many ways: as an active member of the PTA, a charter member and past president of the St. Luke Hospital Auxiliary, a volunteer at Holly Hill Children's Home in Campbell County and a Sunday school teacher.

'My mother was a strong, loving and caring individual who dedicated her life to her family and to her community,' said a daughter, Barbara Runge of Fort Thomas.

'She cared about people she lived with and wanted to see the community be a better place.'

Mrs. Herzog of Fort Thomas died at 4:40 a.m. Wednesday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home in Fort Thomas. She was 85.

She grew up in Nashville, Tenn., and moved with her family to Fort Mitchell when her father, who worked for an insurance company, was transferred.

The family also lived in Erlanger, where Mrs. Herzog graduated from Lloyd High School. In 1935, she married her husband of 52 years, Francis H. 'Bud' Herzog.

The couple had two children, who were raised in Newport. Mrs. Herzog quickly became involved with the PTA at Newport High School and went on to hold leadership roles on the local and state level.

Mrs. Herzog also was an active member of St. John United Church of Christ in Newport, where she taught Sunday school for more than 50 years.

St. John was one of several churches in Campbell County that helped raise funds for the operation of Holly Hill. Her involvement in the church led to her volunteer work for the children's home, her daughter said.

She also took a leadership role on a committee to help raise money for the opening and operation of St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. A past president of the hospital auxiliary, she went on to volunteer in almost every area of the hospital, from the gift shop to the reception desk.

Mrs. Herzog also was devoted to her family. She was a lov ing mother, Ms. Runge said, and a natural care-giver.

When her husband developed heart disease and dementia the last 12 years of his life, Mrs. Herzog cared for him in their home until his death in 1987.

About a year later, Mrs. Herzog was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Other survivors include daughter Sally L. Gaskins of Fort Thomas; a brother, Edwin Arnold of Hamilton, Ohio; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Augustine Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
