James 'Bus' Clark brought Knothole to Campbell County
James "Bus" Clark died just days before his favorite time of the year - spring training - kicked off for the Cincinnati Reds.
The man known as "Mr. Knothole" for his efforts to bring baseball to hundreds of Campbell County youths in the 1930s and 1940s, died Tuesday at Veterans Administration Hospital in Ft. Thomas.
Mr. Clark, 87, of Bellevue, was a former Campbell County commissioner and Newport postmaster and was a founder of the Knothole Baseball League in Campbell County.
Mr. Clark starred in three sports at Bellevue High School - football, baseball and basketball - and decided that the children in his neighborhood needed something to do.
Armed only with his energy and enthusiasm, Mr. Clark solicited businesses for baseballs, gloves and uniforms. He soon founded a baseball league for children on the grounds where the Bellevue Veterans club is today.
Many of the children he coached years ago remember his kindness, said Mr. Clark's wife of many years, Ann Muders Clark.
"Baseball was his first love," Mrs. Clark said. "The knotholers today say they will never forget him. He was the most wonderful man."
Mr. Clark was nicknamed "Buster" by an aunt on the day he was born.
He was a Democratic stalwart who had a strong sense of humor and took delight in simple pleasures, such as hearing the crack of a bat or the laughter of a child.
He was good to his mother and told his grandchildren to be good to their elders, Mrs. Clark said.
"He was very energetic and would do anything to make anyone smile. He was a wonderful husband," Mrs. Clark said.
Mr. Clark was elected as Campbell County Commissioner four times, then resigned to become Newport postmaster. He retired as postmaster after eight years. He served in the campaigns for Happy Chandler and Wendell Ford and was the Northern Kentucky field representative for Sen. Walter D. Huddleston.
Mr. Clark was a former probations and parole officer in Campbell County, a county juvenile officer and a state alcoholic beverage control agent.
Mr. Clark founded the Bellevue Veterans Club, and was a fund-raiser for the County Milk Fund by organizing veterans baseball and basketball games. In the 1950s, he served as the Campbell County polio chairman, organizing and directing efforts of hundreds of volunteers. He also was founder of the Good Sam Club, which organized fund-raisers to provide shoes and milk to the needy children of Bellevue and Dayton, and was a fund-raiser for the Campbell Lodge Boys Home, the Youth Haven Committee, Newport Lodge No. 273 B.P.O.E., and the United Appeal in Campbell County.
Mr. Clark was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Favorite Federal Building and Loan Association, and was a former public relations worker with the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co.
He was a member of The Cincinnati Post Baseball Hall of Fame, the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame, and the Northern Kentucky Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Disabled American Veterans.
Other survivors include a daughter, Barbara Ann Pulsfort of Dublin, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart, Bellevue. Mr. Clark's body was donated to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Church, 318 Division St., Bellevue, Ky. 41073.
