Ann Louise Thomas Haney, hospital volunteer

In 1973, Ann Louise Thomas Haney of Covington became the first person in the area to have both knee joints replaced.

Mrs. Haney had been plagued by arthritis and credited the initial operation at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington and follow-up surgery with allowing her to subsequently volunteer for 22 years at the hospital's Second Time Around Thrift Shop.

A daughter, Marianne Meyer of Erlanger, explained why Mrs. Haney wanted both of her knees replaced.

'She wanted to be able to kneel in church,' Mrs. Meyer said. 'Her faith was very important to her.'

Mrs. Haney, 88, died Saturday morning at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

Mrs. Haney was a native of Fancy Farm.

As a teen-ager, she came to Covington to work as a live-in nurse's aide at St. Elizabeth, a job she held about eight years until she married Charlie Haney of Covington in 1935. He died in 1977.

In 1974, Mrs. Haney began volunteering at the hospital's thrift shop, now on Pearl Street in Covington.

For 15 of the next 22 years, she was co-chair of the store, where needy families could buy donated clothing cheaply and the proceeds benefited the hospital.

'She was a very kind and giving person,' said Mrs. Meyer.

'There have actually been people she took care of who 40 and 50 years later still had contact with her.'

Mrs. Haney doted on her family, her daughter said.

'She was very close to her family and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren,' said Mrs. Meyer.

'Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren called her "Nana'.'

Mrs. Haney was a member of the St. Mary Cathedral Ladies Society and St. Elizabeth Ladies Auxiliary.

Other survivors include a son, Paul Haney of Hebron; daughter, Martha Hinkel of Lakeside Park; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington.

Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Friday.

Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Cemetery in Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
