Sarah L. Schwanke, 57, of Berry, died at noon Wednesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Julius Schwanke; a daughter, Carolyn Sue Schwanke of Berry; and a brother, Everett Wages of Mount Sterling.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Edith Schwier, 91, of Hebron, died Thursday at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Bullittsville Christian Church, Burlington. Her husband, Roy Schwier, died in 1973.

Survivors include daughters, Barbara Altmeyer of Indianapolis, Betty L. Johnson of Hebron and Ida Sparrow of Union; a son, Jim Schwier of Delaware, Ohio; a sister, Pearle Rovers of Laguna, Calif.; a brother, Edward Berner of Richmond, Ind.; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Arlington Memorial Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Woodspoint Nursing Home, 7300 Woodspoint Drive, Florence, Ky., 41042.

Hortense Shipp, 82, of Falmouth, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker, a farmer and a member of the Pendleton County Youth Fair Board, Pendleton County Homemakers and Falmouth Baptist Church. She was a former member of the 4-H Council. Her husband, Andy Shipp, died in 1990.

Survivors include a son, David Shipp of Fort Thomas; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Falmouth Baptist Church. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth. Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth, is handling arrangements.

Leesa Machelle Sowder, 27, of Cynthiana, was found dead Jan. 29 in western Harrison County.

She was a teller with Farmers National Bank, a member of St. Edward Church in Cynthiana, and a student at Maysville Community College.

Survivors include a daughter, Chastyn Elizabeth Bailey Link; her parents, James Lee and Cheryl Bailey Sowder of Cynthiana; a brother, William Joseph Sowder; and grandparents, Nina Bailey of Cynthiana, and Nellie and Robert Rorer of Harrison County.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Edward Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana, with rosary at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Raven Creek Cemetery, Harrison County. Memorials are suggested to St. Edward Catholic School, N. Main St., Cynthiana, Ky., 41031.

Harold Tarvin, 68, of Butler, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was self-employed.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Tarvin; a son, Robert Tarvin of Butler; daughters, Patty Tarvin of Highland Heights and Debbie Johnson of Butler; sisters, Juanita Brownfield of Butler and Lois Webster of Demossville; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Peach Grove Cemetery, Pendleton County.

Bennie Young Sr., 85, of Butler, died Wednesday at his home.

He was a coal miner.

Survivors include a son, Benny Young Jr. of Butler; daughters, Kathy Fahrendorf of Butler, Joyce Taylor of Peach Grove, Thelma Lovitt of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Nancy Barger of Demossville; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial in Butler Ceme tery.

Peter James Kappas, put skills to work for GOP, own business

Long before Republicans became a power in Northern Kentucky elections, Peter James Kappas toiled to promote the Grand Old Party.

'He was truly a believer that the two-party system was necessary for a republic to work,' said his son, John Kappas.

Mr. Kappas, 86, of Florence, died at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice in Covington.

He became active in the Republican Party in 1956, eventually serving as Fourth District chairman, president of the Kenton County Republican Executive Committee and engaging in other party roles.

In 1971, he was given the inaugural Honor Award of the Kenton County Republican Men's Club.

'I am in politics, but not a politician,' Mr. Kappas said at the awards ceremony.

He was co-founder, owner and operator of Madison Office Supply Co., which began with a Covington store and expanded to Florence.

Mr. Kappas applied his business expertise to become president of the Retail Merchants Association of Downtown Covington in the 1960s and 1970s.

Mr. Kappas was a member of Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Finneytown, Ohio, where he was a member of the Order of Ahepa and served as past choir master.

He was a member and past master of Covington Lodge No. 109, and a member of Covington Scottish Rite, Covington York Rite Bodies and Covington/Kenton County Kiwanis Club.

He was married to his wife, Tasia, for 64 years.

Mr. Kappas was the father-in-law of U.S. Rep. Ken Lucas, D-Ky., of Richwood.

Other survivors include sons, John Kappas of Park Hills and James Kappas of Kenwood, Ohio; a daughter, Mary Lucas of Richwood; a brother, Louis Kappas of Cincinnati; sisters, Floretta Drossos of Crescent Springs and Margaret Demas of Florida; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Church, Finneytown, Ohio. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, with Indra Consistory-Scottish Rite services at 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Highland Cemetery Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Church, 7000 Winton Road, Finneytown, Ohio 45232.

Ellen Mayree Aylor, 75, of Floral City, Fla., formerly of Hebron, died Thursday at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness, Fla. She was a retired owner and operator of Hebron Florist.

Survivors include her husband, Melvin C. Aylor; a son, Melvyn Aylor of Bell, Fla.; a daughter, Charlene Struve of Trenton, Fla.; brothers, John C. Holladay of Burlington and William A. Holladay of Centertown; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bullittsburg Baptist Church Cemetery, Burlington. Memorials are suggested to Hebron Baptist Church, 1488 Petersburg Road, Hebron, Ky. 41048.

Dennis Bedford, 34, of Cincinnati, formerly of Newport, died Tuesday at University Hospital in Cincinnati. He was a roofer and member of International Roofers of America Union, Local No. 42.

Survivors include a daughter, Dalsha Bedford at home; a son, Dennis Bedford Jr. at home; his parents, Raymond and Rosemary Bedford of Cincinnati; brothers, Raymond B. Bedford of Alexandria, Robert Bedford and Sam Bedford, both of Cincinnati, and Leon Bedford and Jack Bedford, both of Newport; and sisters, Patricia Griffins, Adija Bedford, Shirley Bedford and Kim Dixon, all of Cincinnati.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Vivian's Church, Finneytown, Ohio. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Norma Berringer, 75, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at her residence. She was a retired tax examiner and a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Bellevue, where she once served as choir director.

Survivors include her husband, Carroll Berringer; sons, Mark Berringer of Fort Thomas and Paul Berringer of Milford, Ohio; a brother, Eugene Griffith of Ellenton, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

Lena 'Linda' Brewer, 67, of Hebron, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was a homemaker. A daughter, Darlene Brewer, died in 1960.

Survivors include sons, George Kissick and Donald Ray Kissick, both of Paris, and Anthony Kissick of Florence; a daughter, Lisa Carson of Hebron; a brother, Houston McFarland of Norwood, Ohio; sisters, Matilda Payne of Dry Ridge, Elizabeth Massey of Newport, Gaynel Linville of Latonia and Mary Bales of McKee; a stepsister, Viola Hutchens of Paris; seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

James L. Clifford Jr., 76, of Hebron, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a retired truck driver for W.R. Grace Co., Wilder, and an Army veteran of World War II. He also was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Burlington, VFW Post No. 8020 in Wilder, Local 100 Teamsters, retired teamsters and the Bob White Club in Clairville.

Survivors include his wife, Mary A. Clifford.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Burlington. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Margaret Christine Cohorn Daniels, 76, of Florence, died at 9:55 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. She was a homemaker, the former owner and operator of Christine's Beauty Nook in Florence and a member of Latonia Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Paul G. Daniels; sons, Lonnie P. Daniels of Richwood and Jimmy V. Daniels of Florence; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
