Frances 'Tan' Taylor Harp, owned Harp House Restaurant in Grant

Frances 'Tan' Taylor Harp had only one son, but many Williamstown youngsters thought of her as 'Mom.'

'She was always good with young people. A lot of them are telling me they thought of her as a second mother,' said Mrs. Harp's son, Tony.

Mrs. Harp, 78, of Williamstown, died Saturday at her home.

She and her husband used to own the Harp House Restaurant just off Interstate 75 in Williamstown, and in recent years she had been a 'counter gal' with Lucas-Moore Drug Store in Williamstown.

'She worked at the old-time soda bar for close to 40 hours a week, and until she was about 76 years old. She was always a very active woman,' Tony Harp said.

In the 1960s and 1970s his parents operated the Harp House, Tony Harp said. 'She opened at 6 a.m., and he closed at midnight. They kind of met each other coming and going.'

Mrs. Harp had a keen interest in flower arrangement and was a member of the Carlsbad Garden Club and chairwoman of the Grant County Fair Flower Show.

'She liked to work behind the scenes and directed the organization of the flower show at the fair, which has become very popular,' Mrs. Harp's son said. She was involved with the fair as recently as last summer, he said.

His mother was a member of the Williamstown United Methodist Church and regularly delivered flowers to the church, he said.

Mrs. Harp enjoyed sunbathing and would often work with tobacco farmers setting out plants in the spring, her son said, but he learned that was not the origin of her nickname of 'Tan.' The name came from a young nephew who couldn't pronounce 'Aunt Fran' and called her 'Tan-Tan.'

Mrs. Harp was treasurer of the Grant County Crippled Children's Society and a member of Grant County Woman's Club.

Other survivors include her husband, Bullitt Harp; sisters, Helen Belcher of Burlington and Dorothy Powers of Williamstown; two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Williamstown United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown, and after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075; or Williamstown United Methodist Church, 206 Paris St., Williamstown, Ky. 41097.
