Ralph Barhorst, Scout leader

Friends thought of Ralph P. 'Barney' Barhorst as a 'stand-up guy.'

That's because Mr. Barhorst stood up for his family, his country and his friends. And when he wasn't busy being a cable splicer and union leader, he found time to be a Boy Scout troop leader.

'He had so many friends, I think our place will be overrun after the funeral,' said Ethel Taylor Barhorst, who was married to him for 50 years.

Mr. Barhorst, 78, of Florence, died at 11:05 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was retired from Cincinnati Bell Telephone and was a member of Communications Workers of America Local No. 144 in Cincinnati.

He was also a member of the Kilgore Chapter of Telephone Pioneers of America and Independence American Legion Post No. 275 and was a past troop leader with the Independence Boy Scouts Troop No. 8.

Mrs. Barhorst said her husband was a kind, gentle man who was always considerate of other people's feelings.

'He loved me. And I loved him,' Mrs. Barhorst said. 'We both loved children and loved working with children. And we both loved camping.'

Mr. Barhorst, a Covington native, also enjoyed playing and coaching softball for many years. He coached baseball for neighborhood children and passed his enthusiasm for life on to his own children, his wife said.

'We have eight children and every one of them have been in scouting and sports,' Mrs. Barhorst said. 'They have all been great and graduated from school.'

Other survivors include his sons, Barney Paul Barhorst of Fort Mitchell, David Scott Barhorst of Erlanger and Robert Andrew Barhorst of Taylor Mill; daughters, Cathy Sue Hopper and Patricia Lynn Sipple, both of Independence, Peggy Ann Orcutt and Martha Lee Gross, both of Taylor Mill, and Mary Linda Combs of Richwood; a brother, Jim Barhorst of Independence; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Memorials are suggested to Boy Scouts of America, 2331 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati, Ohio 45206; or American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.
