Announced on: 02-18-1999

Harry Geimeier, retired Covington fireman

Harry Albert Geimeier, a third-generation firefighter, dedicated himself to the Covington Fire Department for more than 20 years.

He was proud of his work as a driver of fire engines, and his devotion inspired his son to follow in his footsteps.

'He would have been the third generation (firefighter). He had a relative on his mother's side, his father was a Covington fireman, and guess what I am?' said one of Mr. Geimeier's sons, Harry Geimeier of Fort Wright.

Mr. Geimeier, a lifelong resident of West Covington, died at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. He was 83.

The Holmes High School graduate served about five years in the Army during World War II, then married his wife of 55 years, Helen Brewer Geimeier. They had four children.

For awhile, he delivered mail in the Latonia area for the U.S. Postal Service. He also worked as a guard for Brink's Inc. He joined the Covington Fire Department in 1949.

'He thought driving was the best part of the job - getting to the fire and making sure the people who went inside had the water, pressurized

hoses to get the fire out,' said Mr. Geimeier's son, Harry, who is a fire captain in the inspection bureau of the department.

Mr. Geimeier retired in 1971. He enjoyed playing golf, traveling and spending most of his time at home.

The younger Geimeier remembers his father as quiet, laid-back and fair.

'He was stern when he had to be and lenient when he wanted to be,' Harry Geimeier Jr. said. 'He was pretty fair and honest. . . . He tried to make all the boys toe the line.'

Mr. Geimeier also was a commander of the Norman-Barnes American Legion Post No. 70 in Covington.

Other survivors include his wife; sons, Dr. William Geimeier of Wilmington, Del., and Tom Geimeier of Burlington; a daughter, Mary Pelfrey of Hebron; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
