Eugene McHargue, transport expert

Much of Eugene McHargue's life revolved around travel and transportation.

The retired traffic manager with Nutone Inc. in Cincinnati made a living out of finding the cheapest and fastest shipping routes for the company's products. In his spare time, he served on several committees dealing with traffic and transportation.

During his retirement, he and his wife traveled the country and Europe.

Mr. McHargue, of Fort Wright, died at 6:30 a.m. Monday at St. Charles Care Center in Fort Wright. He was 83.

He grew up in Latonia and went to Holmes High School. Following graduation, he went to work as a shipping clerk for a Cincinnati-area company before being transferred to Chicago, where he lived for 10 years.

'That was right after the Depression, and you didn't really have too much choice of work then,' said Mr. McHargue's wife of nearly 63 years, Thelma Bloemer McHargue. 'But he ended up loving his job.'

When World War II came, Mr. McHargue served in the Army.

Following the war, he and his wife returned to Northern Kentucky. He took a job as traffic manager with Nutone, and lived for about 10 years in Latonia before moving to Fort Wright. He and his wife raised four daughters.

Mr. McHargue worked for Nutone for more than 25 years. Part of his job entailed being a practitioner for the Interstate Commerce Commission, arguing in court when transportation disputes arose.

He retired from Nutone in 1978.

'He was a very quiet man; he was a very soft-spoken, gentle person,' Mrs. McHargue said. 'He always had something nice to say about everybody.'

Mr. McHargue was active in civic affairs and enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing cards and traveling.

He was a member of Delta Nu Alpha, the Traffic League, the Knights of Columbus and the Ohio Valley Transportation Advisory Board. He also was a member of Originator of Kentucky Wheels, the Rovers and 55 Plus.
