Ex-Butler mayor William O. Harrison, ran ice cream store, youth hangout

William Ollis Harrison Jr. was not a pharmacist, but he had the right prescription for getting along with youngsters.

'It was the place to go,' Mr. Harrison's daughter, Betty Dunn, of Butler, said of the store operated by her father, next door to the old Butler High School. 'He practically raised many of the kids,' she said.

Mr. Harrison, 83, of Butler, died Friday in St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Mr. Harrison's place was called the 'drug store' because it had once been a pharmacy, but under his ownership it was more of an ice cream shop. 'He had a soda fountain and a back room where everybody danced. His children and his grandchildren always had all the ice cream they could eat,' said Mrs. Dunn.

The inventory of the store also included over-the-counter medicines and sundries, but more than anything, it was a gathering place for the youngsters of the community, Mrs. Dunn said.

'His main interest was children. He hid them behind the counter sometimes when they skipped school, and when the boys went away to the service he kept in touch,' she said.

In addition to operating the store, from 1949 until the early 1980s, Mr. Harrison also served as the mayor and on city council in Butler.

'He was the mayor two or three times, off and on, and was on the council for 12 or 13 years,' his daughter said.

One of his key goals in city government, Mrs. Dunn said, was getting a medical doctor for the community. He was successful in that effort, she noted.

In his earlier years Mr. Harrison coached in Owen County, and also farmed and worked at a tobacco warehouse, Mrs. Dunn said.

Mr. Harrison had been retired for the last several years. He was a former member of the Butler Lions Club and a member of Butler Baptist Church.

His wife, Mildred Harrison, died in 1990.

In addition to Mrs. Dunn, survivors include daughter Joy Greenwell, of Butler; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Butler Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Butler Baptist Church, Butler, Ky. 41006; or the charity of the donor's choice.
