Newport's "Rainey' Cruse, devoted to family, war effort, helping others

Mary Lorraine 'Rainey' Heck Cruse was head inspector of quality control with Alvey and Ferguson Co. in Cincinnati, which made metal casings that were used on fighter planes during World War II.

She took her job very seriously, knowing that explosives were put in the casings, and a defect could be deadly.

'Mom took great pride in the care she put into her job,' said her daughter, Maureen Cruse of Newport.

'My father, who was a decorated veteran of World War II, often remarked that were it not for the war effort back home, their job would have been much tougher.'

Mrs. Cruse, 75, of Newport, died at 3:21 a.m. Sunday at Ivy Woods Care Center in Cincinnati. She had lung disease.

Mrs. Cruse applied as much attention to being a homemaker as she did to the war effort. She raised seven children in a home on Seventh Street in Newport, the same street where she lived almost her entire life.

Her husband, Wade L. Cruse, lived across the street from her when she was in grade school. When he left to fight in the war, Mrs. Cruse worked as a machine operator with Wadsworth Co. in Dayton in addition to her job at Alvey and Ferguson.

Mr. and Mrs. Cruse married in 1945; he died in 1983.

When they started having children, Mrs. Cruse quit working to raise the family.

'Mom was always the "home effort,' ' her daughter said. 'Not a real glamorous job, but she - and the people like her - sure do make it easier on the lives they touch.'

Maureen Cruse described her mother as intelligent and witty.

'She was very outspoken - about everything,' she said. 'If you asked her something, she would give you an honest opinion, sometimes brutally honest. That was part of her charm.'

She was also very giving, Maureen Cruse said. In the 1950s and 1960s, it was not uncommon for homeless people to panhandle at residents' doorsteps. One time, Mrs. Cruse gave away her husband's last clean shirt and all the money in the house.

'She just enjoyed giving. She was always looking out for other people,' she said.

'You always hear people say, "She was just a mother, she was just a housekeeper.' She made a fine art out of being a mother. She had more respect in her job than many CEOs of corporations.'

Other survivors include daughters, Alma Jean Cruse and Sheila Cruse, both of Newport, Cecilia Ann Owens of Florence and Lorraine Ripberger of Cold Spring; sons, Wade J. Cruse and Harry W. Cruse, both of Newport; sisters, Alvera 'Sis' Hornsby of Fort Thomas and Marilyn Heck of Newport; a brother, Roger Heck of Newport; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Corpus Christi Church, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
