Gene Daly, Covington firefighter, jailer

After Gene Daly retired as a firefighter with the Covington Fire Department in 1986, he took a job as deputy jailer for Kenton County. But even then, when a big fire broke out in the city, the Covington man could be found at the scene, eager to lend his help.

'Even after he was retired, I know a couple of times when they had a big fire, he'd be right down there with them,' said Mr. Daly's wife, Pauline Daly.

'He'd do anything he could to help.'

Mr. Daly, a 20-year veteran of the fire department, died at 8:35 a.m. Monday at his home. He was 64.

The Holmes High School graduate was working at an automobile manufacturing plant in Norwood, helping support his first wife and five children, when a friend who was a firefighter encouraged him to take a job at the Covington fire department.

He loved the work, Mrs. Daly said. At the time, he also worked part-time at Lazarus, loading and unloading merchandise.

After his children were grown, he met his second wife, Pauline Daly, whom he married in 1985. He retired from the fire department about a year later.

He soon found a job as a deputy jailer.

He worked for about seven more years, and retired from the jail two years ago. After that, he enjoyed spending his free time hunting, fishing, and being with his friends and family.

'He was a very active guy,' Mrs. Daly said. 'He liked people, he liked to go out, hunting, fishing - fishing, mostly, was his love.'

'He had a lot of friends who he met through work, school and throughout his life.'

Mr. Daly was an Army veteran. He also was a member of Covington Moose Lodge No. 1469.

Other survivors include sons, Mike Daly of Walton, Steve Daly, Dave Daly and Dale Daly, all of Covington; a daughter, Tricia Winterman of Independence; a sister, Donna DeMoss of Covington; stepsons, Barry Parnell and Troy Parnell, both of Covington; stepdaughters, Andrea Staggs of Independence, Toni Martin of California and Paula Parnell of Covington; eight grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home, with Covington Moose Lodge services at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Lyman V. Ginger, leader in education, UK dean
