Ava Lou Gulick, Pendleton teacher

Ava Lou Gulick was proud of being at the top of five generations of her family and equally proud of serving 34 years as a classroom teacher.

In all, Mrs. Gulick, her husband, Richard, who was the Pendleton County superintendent of schools, and her daughter, Nancy Gulick Harville, of Falmouth, had 112 years as educators in the county.

Mrs. Gulick, 83, of Falmouth, died Saturday in Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana.

Mrs. Gulick retired as a teacher in 1978, about the same time her husband retired as superintendent, Mrs. Harville said. 'They had lots of good years together. They would have been married 63 years in June,' she said.

Her mother majored in several subjects in college, including biology, history, English and elementary education, and taught in various grades, including high school, at Morgan in Pendleton County, Mrs. Harville said. She also taught at Pendleton County High School.

'When you're the principal's wife, you go wherever the need is,' Mrs. Harville said.

Her mother enjoyed seeing former students, and nearly always recognized them. 'My father would say, "Who was that?' and my mother would know, because she had them in class,' said Mrs. Harville.

Mrs. Gulick had been a member of Morgan Christian Church since 1942, and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was also president of the Christian Women's Fellowship.

Mrs. Gulick was a member of the Pendleton County and Kentucky retired teachers associations, and a member of Pendleton County KNARR Homemaker Association.

Mrs. Harville said her mother had traveled in all 48 of the contiguous United States, and she loved to crochet and knit and to do needlepoint and cross-stitch.

'She was a very humanistic person. She always put the kids first, including us. She was very proud that five generations of her family were here in Pendleton County,' said Mrs. Harville.

In addition to her husband and daughter, survivors include a sister, Clara Mattox of Falmouth; a brother, Eldon Mains of Falmouth; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth. Memorials are suggested to Morgan Christian Church, Falmouth, Ky. 41040.
