Ronnie "Pappy' Havnik, Dayton mail carrier

When Social Security checks arrived for older residents on Ronnie 'Pappy' Havnik's mail route, he would ring their doorbells to let them know the good news.

When a letter arrived from the military son of a couple who had been waiting anxiously to hear from him, Mr. Havnik delivered the letter before starting the rest of his route.

Mr. Havnik knew the residents on his Dayton-area mail route personally during the 25 years he worked for the U.S. Postal Service.

His acts of kindness were one reason why he was so well-known and respected in the community.

The lifelong Newport man died of heart failure Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was 65.

'He was very well-liked, very well-respected, all over the community,' said a niece, Kimberly Hume of Southgate.

'He was always supportive and encouraging.'

Mr. Havnik graduated from Newport Catholic High School and was drafted into the U.S. Navy for about 18 months during the Korean War.

When he returned, he attended Xavier University before taking a job with the post office. He retired in 1992.

For many years, Mr. Havnik lived at home with his mother and cared for her when she was in failing health. He also raised his niece, Ms. Hume, after her parents died when she was young.

Mr. Havnik never married and did not have children of his own, but he enjoyed being around young people, Ms. Hume said. He was a longtime Knothole baseball coach in Newport.

'He said it always made him feel young,' Ms. Hume said.

Other survivors include a nephew, Rick Beck of Erlanger, and niece, Pam Seibert of Newport.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Therese Church, Southgate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue.

Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
