Robert Noll Sr., adviser to many small businesses

For decades, Northern Kentucky businesses followed the dictates of accountant, financial adviser and businessman Robert B. Noll Sr. His advice was always the same - do what is morally right, what is legal and what is profitable, in that order.

Mr. Noll, 85, died at 9:15 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

He was the son of a farmer and never forgot his roots.

He owned Noll and Associates, a public accounting agency in Covington and Crescent Springs. He helped organize the Northern Kentucky Beer Distributors and was a former owner of the Greyhound Tavern.

Until his death he maintained a large garden and could be found cooking his legendary fried chicken at the St. Joseph Church festivals in Crescent Springs or manning the grill at son Mick Noll's German food booths at local festivals.

'He knew how to talk to people and how to put deals together. He was forward-looking,' said Mick Noll, who owns Mick Noll's catering.

The elder Mr. Noll worked as an accountant at Burger Brewery in Cincinnati, putting himself through night school at Xavier University. When prohibition stopped the brewing business, Mr. Noll sold malt and hops to home brewers.

As a public accountant, he became a trusted adviser to small and large businesses.

'He was the man,' said another son, Robert Noll Jr. 'He was active in a lot of small businesses. They put in the work; he was the adviser, telling them when to raise prices, how to run the financial end.'

As his sons started in business, he advised them and often worked alongside them. At St. Joseph Church, he served on committees. One of his proudest moments was when the church named its community room for him about three years ago.

He was former president of Summit Hills Country Club, where he was lifetime board member emeritus; president of the local Optimist Club and Optimist International Tri State Chapter; and secretary of the Kentucky Beer Distributors.

He had a stroke several years ago.

His first wife, Dorothy Heist Noll, died in 1979.

Other survivors include his wife, Jean Miller Noll; sons, Tom Noll of Villa Hills, Jim Noll of Edgewood, Anthony P. Noll of Covington and Dan Noll of Lexington; a daughter, Dot Noll Wehrmeyer of Covington; stepdaughters, Sue Vance of Georgetown and Martha Allison of Liberty; 23 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. A reception will be held in Noll Hall after the mass on Wednesday.

Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Church, 2470 Lorraine Court, Crescent Springs, Ky. 41017; or charity of the donor's choice.

Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
