Teacher Dorothy May McHenry, served 29 years at Sixth District
Teaching was more of a calling than a profession for Dorothy May McHenry.
Miss McHenry, 85, served 40 years at public schools in Covington and Boone County and retired in 1981 only because of age requirements.
'She had no children, but then again, she had many children,' said a cousin, Jan McKibben of Florence.
'We were at her house, and she has many, many valentines, gifts and sweet little notes from her students.'
When Miss McHenry retired from Sixth District School in Covington in 1981, she was presented with her chair and a plaque that noted she began her work there in 1952.
Miss McHenry, of Florence, died Tuesday at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence.
She was born in Covington and received her degree from Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College, which is now Eastern Kentucky University, in the early 1940s.
She began her career at Point Pleasant Elementary and Florence Elementary and also taught at Florence High School before beginning her long tenure at Sixth District School.
Bill McKibben, Jan's husband, said Miss McHenry was his third-grade teacher in Boone County.
'Back in those days, we didn't even run in the halls,' Mr. McKibben said. 'She made us toe the line. I learned a lot under her.'
Miss McHenry was an excellent teacher who had a sharp memory, McKibben said.
She was also a local historian, particularly when it came to Boone County, Mrs. McKibben said.
'We learned a lot about our family from her,' Mrs. McKibben said.
Miss McHenry was soft-spoken and pleasant and one of her best memories was returning to visit Sixth District School about five years ago, McKibben said.
'Everyone remembered her,' McKibben said. 'She was happy to be there again.'
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home in Florence. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery
