Helen Webster Rice Crouch, 67, of Cincinnati, formerly of Newport and Grants Lick, died Monday at Bethesda Oak Hospital in Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. Her husbands, Fred C. Rice and Charles Kenneth 'Milky' Crouch, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Terry Allen Rice of Tennessee, Darryl Crouch of Red River Gorge, Vernon Crouch of Jacksonville, Fla., Kenneth Howard Crouch of Cincinnati and Kevin Wayne Crouch of Dubois, Pa.; daughters, Connie Simpson, Sherry Hall, Ramona C. Hill and LuWana Faye Myers, all of Cincinnati, and Deanna Fisk of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a brother, Walter Burns of Texas ; sisters, Mable Rosenberry of Cincinnati, Patty Cox and Joyce White , both of Kentucky; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler. Visitation will begin there at noon Thursday. Burial will be in Butler Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Helen Rice Crouch Burial Fund, P. O. Box 34, Butler, Ky. 41006.

Allen L. Field, 76, of Alexandria, died at 10:35 p.m. Monday at Ivy Woods Care Center, Cincinnati. He was owner of an excavating business.

Survivors include a son, Ronald Field of Alexandria; a brother, Ralph Field of Alexandria; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Frances Darlene Lowe-Hon, 53, of Elsmere, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a hair dresser.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Hon; a son, Joe Lowe Jr. of Elsmere; daughters, Mia Powell, Cheri Ledgar and Ginger Jarrell, all of Elsmere; her mother, Frances Jackson of Covington; sisters, Hope Morris of Dayton and Faye Hall of Covington; and 10 grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Laura Mathews, 93, of Louisville, formerly of Petersburg, died Monday at Episcopal Church Home of Louisville. She was a teacher with Petersburg School, postmistress of the Petersburg Post Office, and a member of Petersburg Christian Church.

Survivors include a nephew, Scotty Mathews of Louisville.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Petersburg Cemetery.

Ida L. Phipps, 59, of Sparta, died Monday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. She was a homemaker and a member of Lindon VFW Auxiliary No. 1140.

Survivors include her husband, Earl Phipps; daughters, Betty Scudder and June Lynn Kramer, both of Florence; a son, James E. Phipps of Burlington; brothers, Larry Lindon of Covington and Virgil Lindon of Warsaw; sisters, Marie Ahlers of Sparta, Beverly Lindon of Carrollton and Vivian Lindon of Warsaw; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Glencoe Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Gallatin County Life Squad, Warsaw, Ky. 41095.

Dora L. Gibson Pillion, 64, of Dayton, died Monday at her home. She was a cashier with Chili Time Restaurant, Cincinnati.

Survivors include a son, Scott Pillion of Crestview; a daughter, Billie Mann of Independence; brothers, Darrell Gibson of Dry Ridge and Tom Gibson of Pineville; sisters, Mary Gibson and Melissa Sizemore, both of Pineville, Lula Dooley of Covington and Irene Kilgore of Dayton; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Arnett Funeral Home, Pineville. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in Gibson Cemetery, Pineville.

Claude W. Pulliam, 92, of Williamstown, died at 6:58 p.m. Tuesday at Grant Manor Health Care Facility in Williamstown.

Dorothy JoAnn Scales, 67, of Covington, died at 6 p.m. Monday at her home. She was a retired employee of Wadsworth Electric, Covington, and a member of St. Benedict Church, Covington.

Survivors include sons, Jerry W. Scales and Jay Alan Scales, both of Covington; brothers, Robert Suedkamp, Ralph Suedkamp and Charles Suedkamp, all of Covington, and Joseph Suedkamp of Latonia; sisters, Marie Adamson of Florence and Grace Glass of Covington; and four grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Thursday. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Florence A. Sherlock, 89, of Covington, died Monday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Charles H. Sherlock, died in 1969.

Survivors include sons, Edward C. Sherlock of Bellevue and Charles Todd Sherlock of Alexandria; daughters, Irene Hogle and Margaret Resler, both of Alexandria; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Radel Funeral Home, Highland Heights. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Edith Maxine Stevens, 69, of Maysville, died Monday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. She was a well-known rental-property owner and businesswoman, and a member of the Simon Kenton VFW Post Ladies Auxiliary and Central Baptist Church, Maysville. Her husband, E. P. Stevens, died in 1998.

Survivors include a son, Tommy Jones of Maysville; a daughter, Donna 'Cricket' Stevens of Maysville; brothers, Verlin Snipes of Maysville, Lee Snipes and Hobart 'Junior' Snipes, both of Morehead; and a grandson.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maysville Cemetery.

Eugene Thomas, 74, of Southgate, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired chemical operator with Hilton Davis Co., Cincinnati, and a Navy veteran of World War II. A son, Gary Thomas, died in 1992.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Thomas; a son, Gregory Thomas of Southgate; his stepmother, Opal Thomas Stephens of Tennessee; a sister, Carolyn Yung of Tennessee; and brothers, Arnold Thomas of Eustice, Fla., and Ray Thomas of Chattanooga, Tenn.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday. Entombment will be in Evergreen Mausoleum, Southgate.

James McDermott, Covington firefighter

James A. McDermott spent 20 years as a Covington firefighter, battling big blazes and small fires.

He swallowed smoke and had many sleepless nights. Yet he never complained about his job or his injuries, said his son, Michael J. McDermott of Villa Hills.

'I remember once, when I was about 10, he came home overcome by smoke,' Michael McDermott said. 'The whole neighborhood was worried about him, but he was fine. He was tough.'

James McDermott, 83, of Covington, died Tuesday at Florence Park Care Center in Florence.

He retired from the Covington Fire Department in 1966 and was a World War II veteran. His wife, Verna McDermott, died in 1986.

James McDermott worked for 24 hours and was off for 48 hours. He worked close to home and often brought his children to the station.

Michael McDermott said he was proud of his father and appreciated the elder McDermott's work ethic, sense of humor and ability to enjoy life away from his job.

'He was outspoken and hard-nosed. He was a real case,' Michael McDermott said.

'He enjoyed life. He was a good father.'

Other survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Schwab of Edgewood; and six grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the Fort Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department, Dixie Highway and Highland Avenue, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017.

Donald Earl Adams, 67, of Okeana, Ohio, died at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Arrangements are pending at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere-Erlanger.

Marcella Baker, 85, of Dayton, died at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a retired secretary with Edwards Manufacturing Co., Cincinnati. Her husband, Walter F. Baker, died in 1994.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Dayton. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Richie Blanton, 43, of California, died Monday at his home. He was a chemical operator with Shepherd Chemical Co., Norwood, Ohio.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Rece Blanton; a son, Daniel Blanton of California; his parents, Jack and Margaret Blanton of Falmouth; a brother, John Blanton of Cincinnati; sisters, Dawn Arsenault of Florence, Jeanette Hirschauer of Covington, Cinda Proffitt of Corbin, Annette Webb of California and Rose Wood of Cincinnati.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Edna Brunen, 83, of Orchard Park, N.Y., formerly of Fort Wright, died Tuesday in Orchard Park. She was a retired supervisor with H&S Pogue's department store in Cincinnati. After her retirement, she volunteered at the Thomas More College Library.

She was founder of the Thomas More College Women's Guild, helped start the Bluegrass Swim Club in Fort Wright and was an officer with the South Hills Civic Club. Her first husband, Paul Horstman, died during World War II. Her second husband, George W. Brunen, died in 1986.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Parton of Orchard Park; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to the Thomas More College Library, 333 Thomas More Parkway, Crestview Hills, Ky. 41017.
