Rose Poole Dawalt, 62, of Walton, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of All Saints Church, Walton, and American Legion Post No. 277 Auxiliary, Walton.

Survivors include her husband, Howard Dawalt; sons, William Joseph Dawalt of Independence, James A. Dawalt and Timmy W. Dawalt, both of Erlanger; a daughter, Latoshia Dawalt of Walton; brothers, Donnie Poole of Verona, James A. Poole of Florence and Richard Poole of Warsaw; and sisters, Nell Jo Nantz of Taylor Mill and Jean Phipps of Walton.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Verona. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

James Richard Gould, 34, of Glencoe, died Wednesday on U.S. 127 north of Glencoe in an auto accident. He was a maintenance worker with Turfway Park, Florence.

Survivors include his wife, April Gould; a daughter, Keshia Gould of Glencoe; a son, Zackery Gould of Glencoe; his parents, Ben Gould of Warsaw and Sylvia Gould of Ghent; brothers, Tony Gould of Glencoe and Todd Gould of Warsaw; and sisters, Tonia Gould, Christina Gould and Natasha Gould, all of Warsaw.

Services will be at 8 p.m. Friday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Friday.

Beverly Baines Johnson, 81, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at his home. He was a retired mechanic and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Frederick Johnson; a son, Beverly T. Johnson of Harrison County; daughters, Lois Isaac and Donna Clifford, both of Cynthiana; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Dorothy I. Kirgan Layton, 74, of Covington, died Tuesday at her home. She was an office manager for an optometrist and a volunteer with the ombudsman program of Senior Citizens of Northern Kentucky. Her husband, Bruce Layton, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Ronald Hill and Bruce Layton II; a daughter, Bernadette Turbeville; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Floral Hills Cemetery Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014. Legacy Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.

Laura Mathews, 93, of Louisville, formerly of Petersburg, died Monday at Episcopal Church Home of Louisville. She was a teacher with Petersburg School, postmistress of the Petersburg Post Office and a member of Petersburg Christian Church.

Survivors include a nephew, Scotty Mathews of Louisville.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Petersburg Christian Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Petersburg Cemetery.

Donald Joseph Menning Sr., 72, of Alexandria, died at 12:52 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired truck driver with Stone Container, Cincinnati, and an Army veteran of World War II. His first wife, Helen Wolfzorn Menning, died in 1977.

Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Quitter Menning; sons, Donald J. Menning Jr. of Florence, Dennis Menning of Alexandria, Darryl Menning of Dayton, Richard Menning of Latonia, Raymond Menning of Fort Thomas and Jeffery Menning of Chicago; a stepson, Gil Martin of Bellevue; daughters, Karen Menning of Alexandria, Kendra Evans of Lebanon, Ohio, Margaret Mohr and Mary O'Brien, both of Fort Thomas; stepdaughters, Kathleen Keenan of Venice, Fla., Janet Hatfield of Ewing, Va., Marilyn Kramer of Union and Martha Steffen of Southgate; a brother, Kenneth Menning of Newport; 28 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Claude William Pulliam, 92, of Williamstown, died Tuesday at Grant Manor Nursing Home in Williamstown.

He was a retired farmer and a former Williamstown police officer. He also was a member of Colemanville Christian Church, Pendleton County.

His first wife, Mabel Dunaway Pulliam, died in 1983. A son, Claude Pulliam Jr., died in 1944.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva Toole Pulliam; sons, Harold Pulliam of Lexington and Richard Pulliam of Bouse, Ariz.; a brother, James Pulliam of Boyd; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry.

Lawrence J. Ryder, 74, of Dayton, died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital, Cincinnati. He was an environmental worker with Dallas County Hospital in Perry, Iowa.

Survivors include sons, Jason Ryder and Joseph Ryder, both of Kentucky, and Larry Ryder of San Diego; a daughter, Rachel Simmons of Sparta; a sister, Elsie Coy of Florida; a brother, Glenn Ryder of Cortland, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue, is handling arrangements.

Leo Nienaber let devotion to his family speak loudest

Leo A. Nienaber was a quiet man, yet his actions as a family man spoke volumes.

For three years in the early 1980s, Mr. Nienaber was the president of the Boone County High School Band Boosters.

He and his wife of 36 years, Joyce, helped raise money for competitions and trips to Florida, cheered their son and daughter and their fellow band members and provided support to other parents.

'He was devoted to his kids,' Mrs. Nienaber said. 'And now we have a granddaughter, Abby, who is 1. She has been our blessing.'

Mr. Nienaber, 69, of Florence, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

He was a retired electrical engineer for Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co. and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He also was a member of St. Paul Church in Florence.

Mr. Nienaber, who grew up in Covington, enjoyed fixing things around the house, his wife said. 'He was meticulous about the things he did,' she said.

He also leaves a son, Jeff Nienaber of Erlanger; a daughter, Jenny Nienaber of Erlanger; a brother, Paul Nienaber of Florence; and a grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Church, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky., 41042; or charity of donor's choice.

Donald Earl Adams, 67, of Okeana, Ohio, died at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday at University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He was a retired engineer for Cincinnati Bell and a Coast Guard veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Adele Adams; sons, David Adams of West Harrison, Ind., and Gary Adams of Cheviot, Ohio; daughters, Amy Lockwood of Liberty, Ind., and Lynda Davis of Shandon, Ohio; his mother, Anna Adams of Bright, Ind.; sisters, Doris Schemen and Verna Smith, both of Cincinnati, and Esther Dick of Bright, Ind.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Shirley Linzy Ball, 72, of Morning View, died Wednesday at his home. He was a member of Marcus Baptist Church in Morgan, Masonic Lodge 746 in Latonia, and the Scottish Rite in Covington. He was a retired roadmaster for CSX railroad.

Survivors include his wife, Dot Marie Riddle Ball of Morning View; sons, John D. Ball of Morning View, Jerry A. Ball of Independence, Charles W. Ball of Crittenden, Carl L. Ball of Walton, and Kenny L. Ball of Taylor Mill; daughters, Brenda M. Taylor of Independence, Barbara J. Perkins of Morning View and Lois A.
