John Hammons, 72, of Covington, died at 10 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.

Howard Hicks, 77, of Warsaw, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood, after an extended illness. He was a retired welder and an ordained minister. He was pastor of Concord Baptist Church, and a past high priest of the York Rite. He also was a member of Ghent Chapter No. 130; Knight Templar Eye Foundation; Super Excellent Master Harrison Council No. 106; and Tadmor Lodge No. 108, Warsaw. His wife, Essie Lee Hicks, died in 1974.

Survivors include daughters, Barbara McCord of Sabina, Ohio, Colleen Walton of Aberdeen, Ind., and Deborah Falin of Dickson, Tenn.; sons, Daniel Hicks of Ashville, N.C., and Howard Randall Hicks of Tipp City, Ohio; brothers, Roy Hicks and Harry Hicks, both of Warsaw, Floyd Hicks of Burlington and Glendel Hicks of Verona; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Glencoe Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Concord Baptist Church Building Fund, Warsaw, Ky. 41095.

Jeanetta Marsh, 52, of Florence, died at 12:30 a.m. today at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Barbara Miller, 64, of Independence, died at 12:20 p.m. Tuesday at Deaconess Hospital, Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence.

Sister Roberta Moran, C.D.P., 74, of Melbourne, died at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Home, Melbourne. She was an elementary school teacher, teaching in several Kentucky and Ohio schools, including Corpus Christi in Newport and St. Bernard in Dayton.

Survivors include brothers, Robert Moran of Loveland, Ohio, and Will Moran of Naples, Fla.; and sisters, Mary Ellen Herwig of Lake Wales, Fla., and Melva Werling of Newport.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 4 p.m. Friday at St. Anne Convent Chapel, Melbourne. Visitation will begin there at 2:30 p.m. Friday, with a wake service at 3 p.m. Burial will be in St. Anne Convent Cemetery, Melbourne. Memorials are suggested to the Congregation of Divine Providence, Highway 8, Melbourne, Ky. 41059. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Joann Osborne, 59, of Owenton, died Monday at Frankfort Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Owenton United Methodist Church, and traveled with the church lay witness team and did chalk drawings all over the state. She was the church organist, and served as a teacher's aide at Owen County Elementary School.

Survivors include her husband, Jackie Osborne; a son, Robbie Osborne of Owenton; a daughter, Cristel Buffin of Owenton; a brother, Larry Dale Perry of Owenton; and three grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Rogers Funeral Home, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton.

Bessie T. Rice, 97, of Taylor Mill, died at 3:50 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Hilltop Church of Christ, Taylor Mill. Her husband, Frank H. Rice, died in 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Bromwell of Taylor Mill; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Charles Singleton, 72, of Covington, died at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday in the emergency room at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Donald Lee South, 65, of Worthville, died Tuesday at his home. He was a retired Kenton County Highway Department worker.

Survivors include his wife, Romaine "Pat" South of Worthville; a daughter, Terri Hedger of Covington; a son, Donald South II of Covington; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be private. Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton, is handling arrangements.

Dorothy Hutchens Wesley, 60, of Covington, died at 2:10 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. She was a retired food service cashier with Covington Independent Schools, and a member of Mother of God Church, Covington, and Emera Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, James D. Wesley; daughters, Cheryl Volpenhein and Laura Thayer, both of Covington, Darlene Pabst of Independence and Denise Gilligan of Ft. Wright; a sister, Janet Stoneberger of Gallipolis, Ohio; and eight grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:05 p.m. Friday at Mother of God Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Don E. Walls, gave daughter kidney

Don E. "Hardtimes" Walls did not hesitate when his daughter, Sandy Sue Cooper, needed a kidney transplant in 1971.

Mr. Walls gave his daughter 11 more years of life by donating one of his own kidneys.

"I can tell you that his own health was not even a consideration. It was just the thing to do," said his wife, Denise Gross Walls.

Sacrificing for his daughter came naturally for a man who took care of his own large family and many Conner High School students who needed an extra father figure.

"He was one of the most family oriented people I ever knew - his family and anybody in need," Mrs. Walls said.

Mr. Walls, 60, of Florence, died Thursday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a truck driver for Roadway Trucking and owned his own business, Bluebird Communications.

He was a member of Berean Baptist Church, Independence; Teamsters Union 100; and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Mr. Walls' nickname was his "handle," and it stuck with him after he left the trucking business.

He was also a country and gospel singer. He formed Hardtimes and the Sounds of Country band with his wife as manager. The band played private parties and CD club dances.

Mr. Walls was a self-taught radio technician, repairing CB radios and other electronic equipment.

He parlayed his mechanical talent into Bluebird Communications.

Other survivors include sons, Don R. Walls Jr. of Burlington and Jack K. Walls and Christopher J. Walls, both of Elsmere; daughters, Kathy Heisle of Covington, Tammy J. Baker of Latonia and Kelly A. Ellis of Dry Ridge; stepsons, Richard W. Mingie Jr. and Timothy P. Mingie, both of Florence, and Jerry J. Mingie of Panama; his mother, Emily Rose Walls of Florence; sisters, Margie Remley and Deanna Foltz, both of Florence, Barbara Riggs of Milan, Ind., and Brenda Roberts of Ghent, Mass.; brothers, Dallas Walls of Latonia and John Walls of Erlanger; 24 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Berean Baptist Church, Independence. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Suite 1026, Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.

James M. Baumgardner, 60, of Covington, died Feb. 11 at his residence. He was disabled.

Graveside services and burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. C. and C. Mortuary, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Mina Ellen Case, 56, of Independence, died at 8:07 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a housekeeper at the Holiday Inn, Ft. Mitchell.

Survivors include a sister, Kathy Troy of Independence; and a brother, Bobby Case of Independence.

Services will be at noon Monday at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere, with visitation from 10 a.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Raymond Gabbard Sr., 69, of Burlington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a truck driver for Ryerson Steel Co. and a member of Burlington Baptist Church, Burlington Masonic Lodge No. 264 F&AM, and Indra Consistory Scottish Rite.

His wife, Rosie Gabbard, died in 1982. Survivors include a son, Raymond Gabbard Jr. of Burlington; a daughter, Betty Lou Murrell of Burlington; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence, with visitation from 2 p.m. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Burlington Cemetery. Helen Hughes, 69, of Florence, died at 2:55 p.m. Thursday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a retired employee of the Ninth District School, Latonia, and a member of Rosebud Chapter No. 39 Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include sons, Rob Hughes of Taylor Mill, Joe Hughes of Independence, David Hughes of Corpus Christi, Texas ; daughters, Pam Bates of Phillipsburg, N.J., and Cindi Collins of Latonia; brothers, Howard Gill of Middletown, Ohio, James Combess Jr. of New Boston, Ohio; sisters, Hazel Rideout of Texas , Garnet Roberts of New Boston, Ohio; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, with visitation from 5 p.m. Graveside services and burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright. Memorials are suggested to Woodspoint Nursing Home, 7300 Woodspoint Drive, Florence, Ky. 41042. Fannie Bridget Lacey, 92, of Augusta, died at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was retired from the F.A. Neider Co., Augusta. She was a member of St. Augustine Church, Augusta, and the Mary Martha Society.

Her husband, Elmery Lacey, died in 1962. Survivors include a daughter, Joan Frances Byrne of Loveland, Ohio; a son, Joseph L. Lacey of Augusta; a sister, Mary Louise Carrigan of Norwood; and five grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Augustine Church, Augusta. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery, Augusta. Memorials are suggested to St. Augustine School, Fourth Street, Augusta, Ky. 41002; or the Alzheimers Research Center, 231 Bethesda Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229. Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Augusta, is in charge.
