Rev. William C. Johnson, former Walton councilman
Rev. William C. Johnson, the first black elected official in Boone County, died Thursday. He was 81.
Rev. Johnson served on the Walton City Council for six years, resigning in 1985.
He believed that all citizens should be represented in the city government.
"He saw it as his duty to get involved with the council," said his son, Dwight Johnson of Walton. "It was probably for the betterment of all the people in town."
Rev. Johnson died at 2:30 p.m. at Gallatin County Health Care Center. He was a retired clerk for Lazarus Department Store.
He was the pastor of First Baptist Church in Ripley, Ohio, for 16 years.
After retiring from there, he served as interim pastor for several churches, including First Baptist Church in Burlington and Zion Baptist in Walton.
"He loved church," his son said. "He was a minister who tried to help everybody. He spent a lot of his time going to Baptist conventions and any kind of religious meetings they would have in various places."
Dwight Johnson said his father was a fun-loving person.
"He was always smiling."
Other survivors include his wife, Anna Pearl Johnson; son Billy Johnson of Lexington; a daughter, Gladys "Doll" Arnold of Walton; a brother, Rev. Mack Johnson of Lexington; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Baptist Church, Walton. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton, is handling arrangements.

Roy N. Bayes Sr., 68, of Glencoe, died Thursday at his residence. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Good Guys Club and the American Legion Post No. 277, Walton. A son, Johnny Bayes, died in 1977.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Bayes; daughters, Debbie Mullikin of Owenton and Lynn Vanoy of Warsaw; sons, Roy N. Bayes Jr. of Keizer, Ore., and James Edward Bayes of Carrollton; a sister, Irene Arnette of Dayton, Ohio; a half-sister, Thelma Fitzgerald of Dayton, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw, with visitation from 5 to 9 tonight. Burial will be in Napoleon Cemetery, Gallatin County. Mary Ritter Briggs, 76, of Florence, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. She was a homemaker; a member and former secretary of Erlanger Christian Church; and a member of Florence Homemakers, Florence Women's Club and the Order of Eastern Star, Florence chapter.
Survivors include her husband, Gifford Briggs; sons, Charles Briggs of Nicholasville, Richard Briggs and Bill Briggs of Florence, Lindsey Briggs of Paducah and Robert Briggs of Union; a brother, Lindsey Taylor of Locust Grove, Va.; and 11 grandchildren.

Mary Ann Kurre Brophy, 82, of Fort Wright, died at 12:50 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. She was a homemaker; a retired nurse for St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington; and a member of St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright, and the Hilltoppers Seniors Club, Fort Wright.

Randel Lee Brown, 83, of Williamstown, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Grant County in Williamstown. He was a retired farmer and a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Williamstown.
Survivors include his wife, Romagene Kinmon Brown; a son, Lanny S. Brown of Paris; daughters, Reva Bell of Somerset, Barbara Ahlfeld of Florence and Pamela Hunter of Jonesville; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and two step- great-grandchildren.

Elsie "Al" Clenney, 85, of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Wednesday at Good Shepherd Hospice in Auburndale, Fla. He was a retired laboratory technician in the petroleum industry.
His wife, Pauline Clenney, died in 1995. Survivors include a stepson, Earl Lucas of Lakeland, Fla.; sisters, Norma C. David of Pensacola, Fla., Martha Nichols and Inez Nichols of Cuthbert, Ga.; and a brother, John C. Clenney of Montgomery, Ala.

Jack N. Deming, 65, of Fort Mitchell, died Friday at Owenton Manor in Owenton. He was a retired math teacher for Lloyd High School, Erlanger, where he coached golf.
His wife, Mary Patricia Deming, died in 1992. Survivors include sons, Howard Swetman Deming and Patrick Francis Deming of Erlanger; and a brother, Joel Deming of Louisville.

Elizabeth Nicole Enda, 2-month-old daughter of Jason Anthony Enda and Brandy Lynn Bowin of Walton, died Wednesday at Children's Hospital in Cincinnati.

Ida Mae Jacobs, 75, of Park Hills, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of St. John Church, Covington.
Her husband, William "Pete" Jacobs, died in 1981. Alma E. Bush Meyers, 86, of Highland Heights, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired long distance operator for AT&T in Cincinnati.

Richard Paul "Dick" Robinson, 81, of Burlington, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a retired tool and die maker for General Electric, a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Erlanger Baptist Church, a member of the Brotherhood and Lloyd High School Band Boosters and Athletic Association, a leader for the Royal Ambassadors in Erlanger, a retired deacon for Burlington Baptist Church and a singer with the Solid Rockers.
Survivors include his wife, Willena Hayden Robinson; sons, James Paul Robinson of Warsaw and Arnold Lee Robinson of Burlington; a sister, Doralee Padis of Oakland, Calif.; a brother, Willard Robinson of Bradenton, Fla.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Peggy Talbert, 66, of Hebron, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington. She was a waitress and bartender for Holiday Inn, Florence.

Robert Held, helped Falmouth in flood, raised prize beagles
When floodwaters rolled over Falmouth in 1997, Robert C. Held Jr. of Cold Spring helped residents put their lives back together.
A civil engineer with the Kentucky Department of Transportation, Mr. Held oversaw the repair and replacement of drainage pipes and helped set up tie-back walls designed to keep water off roadways.
He also helped set up a trailer park to provide temporary shelter for people whose homes were damaged or destroyed.
Mr. Held for weeks operated out of a mobile home in Falmouth with other state workers, earning him recognition from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Mr. Held, 33, died Saturday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati.
Mr. Held was a native of Bellevue. He graduated second in his class from Bellevue High School in 1984, winning honors that included math awards.
Mr. Held worked 10 years with the Department of Transportation.
He owned Owl Creek Kennels in Cold Spring and was a past president and treasurer of the Greater Cincinnati Area Beagle Club. He is a member of the Greater Cincinnati Area Beagle Club Hall of Fame.
Working with the dogs gave him "the satisfaction of being able to train beagles to become a champion line," said his mother, Nancy Millard Held of Cold Spring.
"He prided himself in the trophies that they won."
Mr. Held also traced blood lines for the beagles and shared the information with other interested dog owners.
He served as vice president and treasurer of the Fifth District Federation League of Kentucky Sportsmen and was a member of the American Rabbit Hound Association and the National Rifle Association.
"He was a very quiet man," said his mother. "Honesty was one of his major traits."
Other survivors include his father, Robert C. Held of Cold Spring; a brother, David Held of Georgetown; sisters, Debbie Russell of Cold Spring and Cindy Stewart of Burlington; and grandmothers, Jennie Held of Mount Washington and Laura Millard of Fort Thomas.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Cold Spring Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Dobbling Funeral Home in Bellevue. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery
in Southgate.
