Hazel Mae Coleman Wright, was midwife, seamstress and farmer

There was virtually nothing Hazel Mae Coleman Wright couldn't do.

She was a midwife who delivered many children in the Crescent Springs area, and she worked for about 25 years as a seamstress for the former Crane and Breeding Casket Co. in Newport.

She tended her family's 47-acre farm in Indiana, and she was proficient at doing electrical work, chopping timber and other "manly" duties.

"She was very resourceful," said a son, Brack Tucker of Butler. "She liked to sew, garden and can, and she was a better electrician than many men. She also was better than many men on the other end of a cross-cut saw."

Ms. Wright died Monday ather Butler residence. She was 81.

She grew up in a large family in Eastern Kentucky and moved with her father to Cincinnati during the Depression while he worked for Cincinnati Gas and Electric.

She married her first husband, Brack Tucker, in 1933. He had children by a previous marriage, so she helped raise them in Crescent Springs, where he owned a home and operated a small grocery store.

There, she worked as a midwife, something she learned as a child growing up in the mountains of rural Kentucky.

"Back then, kids grew up in a hurry - they had to learn to do everything," her son said.

"I don't know how many kids she brought into the world, but it's a lot."

Ms. Wright had three children. The family remained in Crescent Springs until 1946, when her husband bought a small farm in Indiana. They raised tobacco, cattle and chickens, her son said.

In 1955, Ms. Wright returned to Crescent Springs and, shortly after, she started working as a seamstress. Her first husband, from whom she was separated, died in 1963.

At Crane and Breeding Casket, Ms. Wright hand embroidered the linings of caskets, including the casket of President John F. Kennedy.

She also was a charter member of Church of God in Crescent Springs, where she was treasurer, clerk and Sunday school teacher.

Other survivors include her husband, Lewis Wright, whom she married in 1960; sons, Charles Tucker of Kelat and Ronald Tucker of Chiefland, Fla.; stepsons, Paul Tucker of Eufalah, Okla., and Bernie Tucker of Cleveland; stepdaughters, Terri Ann James and Marsha Louise Pike, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Mildred Gayhoff of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Ray Coleman of Loveland, Ohio; 48 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Church of God, Crescent Springs. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.

Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Memorials are suggested to Church of God, 2500 High St., Crescent Springs, Ky. 41017. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
