Piner's Lendon Hicks, mechanic, church trustee, loving family man

Lendon Hicks supported himself and his family in a variety of ways, including as a mechanic, service-station owner, pest exterminator and manager of an automobile body shop.

He balanced his work with a devotion to his family and church, Demossville Baptist, where he was a trustee.

"He loved his kids and his wife, and he loved the Lord," said a son, Daril Hicks of Alexandria.

Mr. Hicks died Monday at his Piner home. He was 63.

He was born in Jackson, Ky., and moved to the Piner area as a young child. He went to school in Pendleton County.

He married his wife, Wilma Hicks, in 1962. His children were raised mostly in the Piner area, although he also moved the family to Texas and Florida because he just "liked to go," his son said.

"Dad was a free spirit," he said. "He found jobs wherever we moved."

In the mid-1950s, Mr. Hicks purchased a service station in Norwood, Ohio, which he owned until 1972. He also managed an auto-body shop in Norwood.

One of his favorite pastimes was drag racing. He owned his own cars, including a yellow Mustang and a newer, 27-foot-long car, both of which he named "Quarter Horse." A driver raced the cars on tracks around Kentucky and Ohio.

Singing for the church, leading revivals and playing the guitar were among Mr. Hicks' other interests.

He also was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Top mechanic Paul Smith gave classic cars new life

Bracken County antique car enthusiast Paul Junior Smith died at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at his home in Johnsville.

Mr. Smith was 75.

Cars were his lifelong career and hobby, said his son, Jerry Wayne Smith of Foster.

Mr. Smith started working on cars as a young man in the 1940s and ended up opening his own business, Bracken County Motors in Johnsville.

He was a mechanic and could rebuild cars others had given up on, said his son. In the early years, that skill carried his young family through some lean times, according to Jerry Smith.

"I remember him selling his car so he had money to feed us kids and pay his bills," Jerry Smith said.

"He would go buy another old car and fix it up so he had one to drive.

"He was a very honest person. Even when times were rough, he paid all his bills and took care of his family."

Mr. Smith won friends with his outgoing personality and his firm conviction that there was good in everyone, his son said.

He ran his garage for several decades. In 1953 he started working for the Kentucky Department of Transportation as well. He was a mechanic for the state and was a supervisor when he retired in 1983.

After retirement, he started restoring antique cars as a hobby.

He and his wife, Mildred Louise Smith, joined fellow car enthusiasts in road trips that included as many as 200 to 300 Model A and Model T Fords, traveling through Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, said his son.

Mr. Smith's wife died in 1988. He married Margie Wiseman Clos in 1991, and they shared the car hobby.

"We would make week-long tours to Indianapolis and take short tours on all the little, windy back roads," she said.

"He knew everything about those cars. He could recognize every model by its sound."

Mr. Smith helped found the Bracken County Antique Car Club, which later changed its name to the Double A Cruisers. He later helped start the Noken T's Model T Ford Club.

He was a member of the Salem Wesleyan Church. He had been ill for the past two years with lung and heart problems.

Besides his wife, Mr. Smith leaves a daughter, Wanda Sue Simpson of Berry; another son, Donald Paul Smith of Foster; stepsons, Jimmy Lou Clos of Foster and Ronnie Gayle Clos of Germantown; a sister, Helen Peed of Foster; brothers, Leslie Earl "Dick" Smith of Shepherdsville and John F. Smith of Brooksville; 12 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Johnsville Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hope, 1 W. McDonald Parkway, Maysville, Ky., 41056; or Salem Wesleyan Church, Johnsville, Ky., 41043.
