Crescent Springs' Albert Neal, devoted to family, aiding others

No one familiar with Albert W. Neal's generous spirit was surprised to learn the 73-year-old Crescent Springs man had died after mowing the lawn for neighbors.

After all, the former owner of Consolidated Fruit Products Co. in Cincinnati had earned a reputation for helping others.

"He showed his love through his actions, not words," said Mr. Neal's son, Thomas A. Neal, of Dayton, Ohio. Thomas Neal's wife, Christine Neal, said she loved Albert Neal like a father.

"He was very giving," she said. "He was happiest when he was helping others."

Mr. Neal died Tuesday night at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

Mr. Neal was born in Aurora, Ind., and reared in Walton. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a member of Florence Lodge No. 949 F&AM.

Mr. Neal bought Consolidated Fruit Products in 1962. He delivered fruit juices to grocery stores and restaurants.

After he retired in 1970, Mr. Neal kept busy with hobbies and making use of his handyman skills.

He could fix washing machines, air conditioners and plumbing. He could take a car apart and put it back together again, his family said.

Mr. Neal was special not only because of his skills, but because he was willing to use his skills for others - such as fellow residents of an apartment complex on Woodhill Court.

Among his skills was a way with people.

"He was a real handyman and everyone (at the complex) has been coming up and telling us he's going to be missed," said Christine Neal. "He was such a nice man.

"One young woman told the family that, 'He drove me to school when I missed the bus. I gave him a card saying he was the best friend I ever had.' "

He doted on his grandchildren, Brian Neal, 30 and Monica Neal, 25.

"He was always there when you needed him," Mrs. Neal said. "If you had a question, and he didn't know the answer, he'd find out for you. I just never met such a loving person."

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home in Florence.

Visitation will begin there at noon Friday.

Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Erlanger.
