Angeline Bouras, owned Mayflower Sweet Shop
Angeline Bouras was an energetic woman who managed to give her best to both her family and her customers at the old Mayflower Sweet Shop in Newport.
Mrs. Bouras and her husband, James Bouras, were both natives of Sparta, Greece. They met and married after arriving in America.
In the 1940s, the couple opened the Mayflower Sweet Shop restaurant on Monmouth Street. It catered to people who went to a nearby movie theater or gambled.
"I remember we had a juke box and slot machines in there. Gambling was OK back then," said one of Mrs. Bouras' daughters, Diane Page, whose husband, Ken, is former Newport assistant police chief.
The Mayflower Sweet Shop served short orders, sandwiches, ice cream and candy. In the 1950s, the customers changed, the slot machines were taken out and teen-agers filled the restaurant, Mrs. Page said.
"We used to jitterbug in there when we got into high school," Mrs. Page said. "It was safer to be in there than in the bars."
But always at the center of the action was Mrs. Bouras, who cooked, cleaned, ran the register and taught her children how to run the restaurant.
She also served as a surrogate parent to keep her young clients out of trouble, according to Mrs. Page.
"I got some beautiful memories from there. I brought all the kids I knew there. And my mother, she was a beautiful woman," Mrs. Page said.
Mrs. Bouras, 98, of Newport, died at 12:38 p.m. Tuesday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. Her husband died in 1977.
The building that housed the Mayflower has since been torn down, Mrs. Page said.
But Mrs. Bouras encouraged her children to study their Greek heritage long after the Mayflower closed, Mrs. Page said.
"I remember she sent us to Greek school. I understand Greek better than I speak it," Mrs. Page said.
She said her mother was raised on a farm in Greece and she believes a lifelong diet of fresh vegetables contributed to her longevity.
"She never smoked or drank, and I think that helped her," Mrs. Page said.
"And everybody loved her. That helped."
Other survivors include daughters, Marion J. Bolmer and Constance "Tina" Pangallo, also of Newport; sons, Pete Bouras of Newport and George Bouras of Cold Spring; 19 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.

Gene C. Anderson, 82, of Cold Spring, died Monday at his home. He was a retired service manager for the Simon and Fischer auto dealership, Newport, and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Anderson of Cold Spring.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to charity of the donor's choice.

Pearl E. Biery, 91, of Newport, died at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home. She was a retired clerk for Harry Greenwall, Wellenstein and Meyer Co., and a member of Senior Citizens of Northern Kentucky.
Survivors include a brother, Albert Biery of Fort Mitchell.
Services will be at noon Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky., 41075.

Frank Crail, 86, of Grants Lick, died Wednesday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights. He was retired from Northern Kentucky Vocational School and a Navy veteran of World War II. A son, Rodney Crail, died in 1957.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at noon Saturday at Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick.

John T. Jacobs, 71, of Elsmere, died at 3:47 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit in Covington. He was a retired financial manager for Cincom Systems Inc. and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion and Moose Lodge.
Survivors include a son, John T. Jacobs of Elsmere; daughters, Lonna Greene, Marty Brooks and Trudy Jacobs, all of Elsmere; his mother, Georgia C. Brown of Walton; a brother, Wendell Brown of Walton; a sister, Elizabeth Vlasis of Fort Mitchell; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Service, Cincinnati. Herbert Jump, 58, of Dry Ridge, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. He was a retired maintenance electrician for William Powell Valve Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Banklick Baptist Church, Covington.
Survivors include a son, Tommie Jump of Independence; daughters, Connie Mathews of Crittenden, Kimberley Wade of Independence and Amelia Stanley of Korea; a brother, Carlos Jump of Owenton; sisters, Merrily Johns of Florence, Donna Stephenson of Dry Ridge and Vicky Stephens of Crittenden; and 11 grandchildren.

William J. Linton Sr., 38, of Independence, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was a material handler for DHL Worldwide Express at the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

Tom Osgood, 61, of Maysville, died Wednesday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. He was an electrician for Eastern Kentucky Power and a member of St. Patrick Church, Maysville.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Boling Osgood; a daughter, Lisa Osgood Lesley of Cincinnati; a son, Chris Osgood of Maysville; a brother, Vern Osgood of Flushing, Mich.; and one grandchild.

Walter Sipe, 79, of Morning View, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was a retired supervisor for General Motors. He was a member of VFW Post 95, Ryland Heights Lions Club and the Moose Lodge, Taylor Mill.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Peters Sipe; and sisters, Helen See and Elizabeth Schoole, both of Deland, Fla., Esther Russell of Fort McCoy, Fla., and Elva Murphy of Oxford, Ohio.

Rita Claire Spaulding, 67, of Florence, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include sons, Mike Spaulding and Mark Spaulding, both of Burlington; a daughter, Renee Cannedy of Burlington; sisters, Martha Jane Wolfe and Mary McKnight, both of Elsmere, and Ruthie Daly of Annondale, Va.; brothers, Joe Mairose and Jim Mairose, both of Elsmere, Al Mairose of Fort Mitchell and John Mairose of Covington; and three grandchildren.

Dora Lewis spoke mind, shared heart
Dora Lewis didn't raise 13 children by being a shrinking violet.
Although kind and considerate, she didn't hesitate to speak her mind, said her eldest daughter, Hazel Marie Farrington.
Mrs. Lewis, 76, of Covington, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was a homemaker.
"She was a very loving and caring person," said Mrs. Farrington, of Flint, Mich.
"She was also an outspoken person, and she'd tell you what she thought in a heartbeat."
The Cooper Funeral Home in Grants Lick was filled Friday with friends and loved ones paying their last respects. To accommodate the dozens of family members, visitation also is scheduled today and Saturday.
"She loved children, and she loved having her family around her," said Mrs. Farrington.
Other survivors include her husband, Warren Lewis; daughters, Faye LaFollette of Falmouth, Eva Gullion of Covington, Brenda Kittle of Morning View and Linda Tucker of Cincinnati; sons, Willie Deaton, Mike Deaton, Bob Deaton and A.J. Deaton, all of Flint, Mich., James Sebastian Jr. of Covington and Tony Sebastian of Louisville; a brother, Joe McIntosh of Jackson; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandchild. A son, Randy Sebastian, and a daughter, Nancy Deaton, preceded her in death.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick.

Obbie Cook, 79, of Sanders, died Thursday at King's Daughters Hospital in Madison, Ind.
He was a retired truck driver for Coo-Par Concrete, Carrollton, and an Army veteran of World War II.
He was a former manager for Kentuckiana Tobacco Warehouse, Carrollton; former owner of Eagle Valley Campground, Sanders; and a farmer in Owen County. He was a member of Dallasburg Baptist Church, Wheatley. His wife, Emma Cook, and a son, Gary Ray Cook, both preceded him in death.
Survivors include sisters, Marie Clinkscales of Madison, Ind., Mabel Roberts of Burlington and Janice Ryan of Verona; a brother, Leonard Cook Jr. of Piner; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Sun day at the funeral home. Burial will be in Dallasburg Masonic Cemetery, Wheatley.
