James Whitfield

MANITOU - James Kenneth Whitfield, 63, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at his home of cancer.

He was a farmer and had been a funeral home employee.

Surviving are his wife, Karen Elizabeth; and his sister, Hilda Mae Baker.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Harris Funeral Home, burial in Concord Church Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to service time.

Richard Alves
Richard Alves, 86, Henderson, died at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Methodist Hospital.

He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He was a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran and was a member of Rotary Club of Henderson and Henderson Elks Lodge, where he served on the scholarship committee. He also was a Mason and had served as a Henderson city commissioner and on the Henderson City Water Board.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Nancy Lou Alves, who died Jan. 29, 2001.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home. The Rev. Gordon Morrison will officiate. Burial will be in Fernwood Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Frank "Nib" King, Ray Shoemaker, Darrel Hout, Bob Gregory, Clarence LaRue and Otho Stanley.

Arline Robinson

Arline Robinson, 80, Henderson, died at 11:23 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Methodist Hospital.

She was a member of Seventh Street Missionary Baptist Church in Henderson.

Survivors include one sister, Virgie McClure of Henderson; nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Fernwood Cemetery. The Rev. Anthony Brooks will officiate.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. Friday at Mason Brothers Funeral Home Audubon Chapel in Henderson.

James Earl Hart

UNIONTOWN -- James Earl Hart, 68, Uniontown, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.

He was a retired coal miner and a U.S. Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Mildred Hart.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Ann Norris and Rita Jo Pierce, both of Henderson County and Paula Lynn Gourley of Waverly; one son, James Hart of Murray; two sisters, Veda Grooms of Xenia, Ohio and Vera Brady of Pueblo, Colo.; one brother, Ed Hart of Xenia, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Whitsell Funeral Home. The Rev. Chris Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in Uniontown.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and until service time Friday at the funeral home.

Mary Louise Sechrist Shaffer

HANSON -- Mary Louise Sechrist Shaffer, 63, Hanson, formerly of Dover, Pa., died of congestive heart failure at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, in the Select Specialty Care Unit of Deaconess Hospital.

She was a member of Hanson Baptist Church. She was also a former nurses aide at Hopkins County Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Madisonville, working in the Psychiatric Unit.

She was preceded in death by one son, William Sutherland, who died May 22, 1995.

Survivors include her husband of 33 years, Paul Shaffer; four daughters, Deanna Sinnett of Ortanna, Pa., Robin Mitzel of Spring Grove, Pa., Paula Shaffer of Hanson and Karen Tyson of Red Lion, Pa.; three brothers, Robert Stockbower of Red Lion, Rick Stockbower of Emigville, Pa., and Walter Sechrist of Airville, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 8 p.m. Friday at Tompkins Funeral Homes Slaughters-Hanson Chapel. The Rev. Gary Turner and Tom Branson will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in York, Pa.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Mary Shaffer Medical Fund in care of Firstar Bank in Hanson.

Bennett Emmanuel Mitchell
Bennett Emmanuel Mitchell, infant son of Robert E. and April M. Mitchell of Spottsville, died at 4:03 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Women's Hospital in Newburgh.

In addition to his parents, survivors include two sisters, Emily A. Mitchell and Ellie M. Mitchell, both at home; two brothers, Zach D. Bernard and R. Davis Mitchell, both at home; grandparents, Robert and Mary Mitchell of Baskett and John and Shirley McCallister of Morganfield; great-grandparents, Anna R. Mitchell of Reed, Ann H. McCallister of Morganfield and the Rev. and Mrs. George Yates of Sturgis.

Private graveside services will be held at St. Augustine Cemetery in Reed. The Rev. Larry Hostetter will officiate.

There will be no visitation.

Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Holy Name School or Owensboro Catholic Athletic Department.

Lula Cummings

STURGIS -- Lula Cummings, 85, Sturgis, died at 12:36 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville.

She was a member of Sturgis Missionary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wick Cummings, who died in 1997.

Survivors include four nieces, Mary Robinson and Judy Davis, both of Evansville, Marie Elkins of Providence and Margie Vaughn of Lawrenceville, Ill.; and one nephew, Douglas Carroll of Evansville.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sturgis Missionary Baptist Church. The Revs. Joey Durham and Stacy Pearcy will officiate. Burial will be in Pythian Ridge Cemetery in Sturgis.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis is in charge of arrangements.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Sturgis Missionary Baptist Church.

Zona Carver

SLAUGHTERS - Zona (Timmons) Carver, 98, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Ridgewood Terrace Nursing Home in Madisonville.

Surviving are a daughter, Nevelyn Zachary; three sons, Dewey, Sherman and Everett "Vern" Carver; a sister, Opal Timmons; a brother, Shirley Timmons; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Tompkins Funeral Home Slaughters-Hanson Chapel, with burial in Slaughters Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Gilead General Baptist Church.

Joyce Graham

MORGANFIELD - Joyce Graham, 65, of Russellville, Ala., formerly of Morganfield, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002.

Surviving are nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Whitsell Funeral Home Morganfield Chapel, with burial in Uniontown City Cemetery.

Friends may call from noon to service time at the funeral home.
