Leonard E. McKnight, 80, of North Hill Street, London, Kentucky, died Wednesday, August 2, 2000, at the Marymount Medical Center in London, Kentucky.
Born May 7, 1920, in Clay County, Kentucky, he was a retired construction worker for Hinkle Blacktop Company and a member of the Valley Chapel United Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Susie (House) McKnight and Palmer McKnight; his wife, Sudie Alice (Baker) McKnight; a sister, Vada Brown; and a brother, Claude McKnight.
Survivors include a son, Robert P. McKnight and wife Shirlene of London, Ky.; two grandchildren, Tammy Jo Hammock and husband Marvin and Robbie Todd McKnight and wife Wendy, all of London, Ky.; and two great-grandchildren, Sarah Ashley Hammock and Zachary Todd McKnight, all of London, Ky.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, August 4, at the Bowling Funeral Home Chapel with Isaac Proffitt and Jim McCloud officiating. Burial will follow in the A.R. Dyche Memorial Park at London, Ky.

Thelma E. Johnson

Thelma Elizabeth (Martin) Johnson, 84, of Corbin, Kentucky, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at the Hillcrest Nursing Home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Estil Johnson; a son, Conley Dean Johnson; three brothers, Robert Holt, Raymond Holt and Raleigh Holt; and a grandson, Roger Johnson.
Survivors include two sons, Roy Lee Johnson and Glenn Ray Johnson, both of Keavy, Ky.; a brother, Ralph Holt of Topeka, Kansas; two sisters, Rena Holt Watkins and Rella Stevens, both of Corbin, Ky.; seven grandchildren, Greg, Anthony, Michael Ray, Vincent, Branson, Dean and Rhonda; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 1, at the Hart Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Watkins and the Rev. Tim Philpot officiating.
Burial followed in the Locust Grove Cemetery in Keavy.

Boyd B. "B.B." Helton

Boyd B. "B.B." Helton, 72, of Corbin, Kentucky, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.
Born August 21, 1927, in Knox County, Kentucky, he was the owner and operator of H&H Oil Company, a Sunoco distributor, and a member of the Kmart Coffee Club. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and member of the First Christian Church and Trinity United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sarah (Burnett) Helton and John W. Helton.
Survivors include his wife, Euna Walker Helton of Corbin, Ky.; a son, Boyd B. Helton II and wife Tina of London, Ky.; two daughters, Trudy Blankenship and husband David of Corbin, Ky., and Joyce Steele and husband Ralph of Burlington, Ky.; a brother, Eugene Helton of Corbin, Ky.; eight grandchildren, Ralph B. Steele, Bianca Helton, Sara Helton, William Helton, Carissa Helton, Cheyenne Helton, Josh Blankenship and Jessica Blankenship; two great-grandchildren, Bryson Walton and Natasha Steele; and a special nephew, Ray Walker.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 29, 2000, at the Corbin Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Lockhart officiating. Burial followed in the Resthaven Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Boyd B. Helton II, Ray Walker, Ralph Steele, Ralph Birchel Steele, Josh Blankenship, David Blankenship, Pete Gray and James Farris.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church of Corbin.

John Edward Smith
Steel worker
John Edward Smith, 91, of 699 Spence Cemetery Road, Dayton, Tennessee, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at his residence.
Born October 23, 1908, in Norton, Virginia, he was a steel worker and member of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Susan (Legg) Smith and John Wesley Smith; and his wife, Cynthia (Church) Smith.
Survivors include three sons, O'Neil Smith of Dayton, Tenn., Arthur Smith and Robert Smith, both of Hunnington, Ind.; two daughters, Ruby Hibbard of Gary, Ind., and Joyce Smith of Hunnington, Ind.; a brother, James Smith of LaFayette, Ind.; and 15 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 29, at the House-Rawlings Funeral Home with O'Neil Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Tuttle Cemetery at London, Ky.

Hazel Pennington
Teacher/clerk
Hazel Pennington, 91, of 113 North Main Street, London, Kentucky, died Friday, July 28, 2000, at the Baptist Regional Medical Center.
Born August 27, 1908, in Jackson County, Kentucky, she was a retired clerk from Hackney's and Bob's department stores, was a retired teacher in the Laurel and Jackson county school systems, and was a member of the First Christian Church of London, Kentucky.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jenny (Bowling) Medlock and Willie Medlock; her husband, Charles F. Pennington; and a brother, Dan Medlock.
Survivors include a daughter, Geneva Moberly of London, Ky.; two sons, Charles Pennington of London, Ky., and Bill Pennington of Frankfort, Ky.; two sisters, Marie Casteel of Conroe, Texas , and Sada M. Tudor of Richmond, Ky.; nine grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 30, at the First Christian Church of London with the Rev. Jim Wheeler officiating. Burial followed in the A.R. Dyche Memorial Park at London.
House-Rawlings Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Erline Deanna Kupers
Nursing assistant
Erline Deanna Kupers, 59, of Valley Lane, London, Kentucky, died Monday, July 24, 2000, at her residence following a months-long battle with cancer.
Born March 5, 1941, she had received a certification from the state of Florida, where she had been living until about six years ago, for training in home health care from the Pensacola Junior College department of nursing. That same year she received a degree as a nursing assistant from Pensacola Junior College, and in March 1992 received an award for "Employee of the Month" for Olsten Services, a private provider of home health care nurses in Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Martha Ellen (Nantz) France and Willie France.
Survivors include five aunts, Myrtle Green of London, Ky., Jesse Emery of Michigan, Viola Stewart of Manchester, Ky., Mandy Gibson of Somerset, Ky., and Allie Pottorf of Pineville; and two uncles, Bill Nantz of Pineville, Ky., and Albert Nantz of Georgetown, Ky.
It was their wishes that she be cremated, and an announcement of memorial services will be made at a later date by the London Funeral Home.

Vada Lee Bruner Miller

Vada Lee Bruner Miller, 87, of 1265 Roy Dugger Road, London, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at the Christian Life Center in Corbin.
Born January 27, 1913, in Laurel County, she was a long-time member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church and was a prominent member of the community. She and her husband served as foster parents for more than 100 children.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee Bruner and Martha Hubbard Bruner; her husband, Elbert Miller; a sister, Stamphie Marcum; and a brother, Hansford Bruner.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty Sue Caldwell and husband Edward, of London; five sons, Bob Miller and wife Evelyn (Jones) of Sharonville, Ohio, the Rev. Bill Miller and wife Eunice (Boggs) of Ludlow, Ky., Jack Miller and wife Geraldine (Sims) of Somerset, Ky., Jimmie Miller and wife Norma Jean (Smith), of London, and Charles Miller and wife Juanita of Berea, Ky.; one brother, Roscoe Bruner and wife Thenia (Jones); 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends including an "adopted daughter" Cathy Disney, London.
Funeral services for Mrs. Miller were held at the Sinking Creek Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 27, with the Rev. Jimmy Williams, the Rev. Paul Fredricks, and the Rev. Delmer Gross officiating.
Burial followed in the Dunn Cemetery, London.
House-Rawlings Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
