Alvia S. Vankirk
Funeral director
Alvia S. Vankirk, 79, of Corbin, Kentucky, and Venice, Florida, passed from this life on Thursday, January 3, 2002, at the Pinebrook Rehabilitation Center in Venice, Florida.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Helen C. Vankirk, and several cousins in Pennsylvania .
He founded, owned and operated Vankirk Funeral Home from 1955 until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of the Kentucky Funeral Directors Association and received his 50-year pin in 2000. He served 16 years on the Board of Kentucky Funeral Directors Burial Association. He attended the University of Kentucky and was a graduate of the Kentucky School of Embalming. He was also a licensed funeral director in the states of Tennessee, Virginia and Florida, as well as Kentucky.
Alvia always remained active in many civic organizations as well. An active member of the Corbin Kiwanis Club, he was a past-president of the Corbin Club and Lieutenant Governor of District 5. He had 40-plus years of perfect attendance in Kiwanis. A Mason, Shriner and member of Oleika Temple, he was responsible for many children being admitted to the Crippled Children’s home for treatment. He had been a member of the board of directors of the Cumberland Valley National Bank and Trust Co.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army in the European Theatre and was the recipient of five battle stars.
A life-long Presbyterian, he served as an Elder of Corbin Presbyterian Church and had been an active member of Venice Presbyterian Church since 1991.
Visitation will be at the Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 9, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 10, in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Harold Mauney officiating.
Burial will follow in the Pine Hill Cemetery.
Casket bearers will be Robin Reece, Steve McBurney, Russ Hubbs, Jim Paul, Terrell Cobb, Gary Price, Don Rollins, Terry Rollins, Rob Lee and Robert Foley.
The Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Browning
Trucker
Thomas “Little Tom” Browning, 80, of Highway 1228 East Bernstadt, Kentucky, died Friday, January 4, 2002, at the Marymount Medical Center in London, Kentucky.
Born July 29, 1921, in Laurel County, Kentucky, he was a trucker, a veteran of the United States Army, and a believer in the Pentecostal faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Florence (Lewis) Browning and Bill Browning.
Survivors include 14 nieces, Thelma Jones, Beverly Hodge, Lois Ponder, Gennev Pace, Florence Mills, Inez Parsley, Leila Molton, Geneva Sizemore, Brenda Floyd, Linda Settles, Velvet Saylor, Betty Howard, Ilene Whittemore and Verlene Guthrie; 10 nephews, Johnny Browning, Jason Browning, Terry Browning, Glendon Browning, J.B. Browning, Ernest Wayne Browning, Conley Browning, Bill Browning, Eric Browning and Gerald Browning; special friends Alfred and Geneva Combs, and Eddie Ray, Jill and Jessica Combs; and 55 great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 6, at the London Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hobart Woods and the Rev. Larry Robinson officiating.
Burial followed in the River Hill Cemetery at East Bernstadt.
Pallbearers were Eddie Combs, Dale Robinson, Jeff Helton, Danny Gabbard, Richard Gregory, Delane Browning and Larry Ponder.

William Earl Smith
Truck driver
William Earl Smith, 79, of Sim Smith Road, London, Kentucky, died Saturday, January 5, 2002, at the Marymount Medical Center in London.
Born July 13, 1922, in Lawrence County, Ohio, he was a truck driver, a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II, and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of London.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dora Smith and Sim Smith; a son, Samuel Smith; and a brother, James Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Jenny Smith of London, Ky.; four daughters, Linda Martin of Winfield, Ala., Brenda Morris of London, Ky., Sharon Murray of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Nedra Proffitt of Clarksville, Tenn.; four sons, Donald Smith, Larry Smith, Michael Smith and William Smith, all of London, Ky.; a sister, Cornella Downey of Lexington, Ky.; a brother, Robert Smith of London, Ky.; 18 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, at the Bowling Funeral Home Chapel with Bobby Abner and Robert Earl Johnson officiating.
Burial will follow in the Old Salem Cemetery at London.

Denver Benge
London, Kentucky
June 1, 2002
Denver Benge, 77, of Marydale Road, London, Kentucky, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at his residence.
Born October 1, 1924, in Clay County, Kentucky, he was a retired custodian at Bush School, a veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II, and a member of the Mt. Zion Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Martha (Minton) Benge and Matt Benge; and six brothers and sisters, Baxter Benge, George Benge, Matt Benge Jr., Elaine Osterman, Jura Dean Hayre, and Lela Mae Jones.
He was united in marriage to Bobbie Jean (Proffitt) Benge, who survives. He leaves to mourn his passing two children, John Paul Benge and Rachel Marie Benge, both of London, Kentucky; two sisters, Ida Brown of Manchester, Kentucky, and Emma Ring of Portage, Indiana; a brother, Vestil Benge of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; a grandson, Jacob Benge of London, Kentucky; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Monday, June 3, at the House-Rawlings Funeral Home Chapel with Jerry Brown officiating.
Burial followed in the Reuben Bruner Cemetery at London.
Pallbearers were Jacob Benge, Phillip Benge, Larry Brown, Donnie Hayre, Gene Hoskins, Ben Proffitt, Clyde Proffitt and Harrison Proffitt.

Ida Marie Creech
London, Kentucky
June 8, 2002
Ida Marie Creech, 87, of Hawk Creek Road, London, Kentucky, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin, Kentucky.
Born January 10, 1915, in Leslie County, Kentucky, she was a homemaker and member of the Swiss Colony Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lucy Engle and Henry Engle; her husband, Alonza Creech; three children, Jack Creech, Marjorie Sue Gibbs and Joyce Gore; and a brother, Herbert Engle.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Lou Catron of Middletown, Ohio; six sons, Donald Wayne Creech, Glynn Creech, Jimmy Creech, and Roger Creech, all of London, Kentucky, Lonnie Creech of Jeffersonville, Indiana, and Paul Creech of Waterbury, Connecticut; three sisters, Nell Baker of Campbellsville, Kentucky, Elva Harper of Winter Haven, Florida, and Lily Morgan of Fairfield, Kentucky; two brothers, Elvin Engle of Loyall, Kentucky, and Woodrow Engle of East Bernstadt, Kentucky; 27 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, at the Bowling Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Jervis and the Rev. Fountain Jones officiating.
Burial followed in the Swiss Colony Cemetery.

Larry Gibson
London, Kentucky
June 5, 2002
Larry Gibson, 52, of Cloud Subdivision, London, Kentucky, was pronounced dead at his residence on Wednesday, June 5, 2002.
Born January 20, 1950, in Leslie County, Kentucky, he was preceded in death by his parents, Bertha (Jones) Gibson and Woodrow Gibson; and his wife, Deborah (Steed) Gibson.
Survivors include three sisters, Norma Fields of Tipp, Ohio, Izell Smiroldo of London, Kentucky, and Deannie Hensley of Oneida, Kentucky; and two brothers, Floyd Burns of London, Kentucky, and Roe Gibson of Corbin, Kentucky.
Funeral services were conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at the East London Holiness Church with the Rev. Jerry Holland officiating.
Burial followed in the Gibson Family Cemetery at Pine Top under the direction of the London Funeral Home.

Robert Hammons
Manchester, Kentucky
June 6, 2002
Robert Hammons, 89, of Manchester, Kentucky, died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at the Laurel Heights Home for the Elderly in London, Kentucky.
Born July 24, 1912, in Clay County, Kentucky, he was a retired farmer, a veteran of the United States Army, and a member of the New Salem United Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nancy Belle (Buttery) Hammons and Richard Hammons; three sisters, Myrtle Stillings, Laura Finley and Irene Hammons; and two brothers, Fed Hammons and Leonard Hammons.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia Pearl (Hubbard) Hammons; six daughters, Bobbie Jones of Scottsburg, Indiana, Anna Hammons and Pauline Hammons, both of Manchester, Kentucky, Sandy Burger of Roachdale, Indiana, Diane Holmes of Port Huron, Michigan, and Shonda Webb of London, Kentucky; a son, Rick Hammons of Manchester, Kentucky; a sister, Elsie Benge of London, Kentucky, and four brothers, Bill Hammons, Roy Hammons and Ford Hammons, all of London, Kentucky, and Sam Hammons of Manchester, Kentucky; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at the London Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Merle Owens officiating.
Burial followed in the Hammon Family Cemetery in Clay County.
Pallbearers were Tate Hammons, Mike Hammons, Marshall Hammons, Frank Jones, Robert Jones, Robert Hammons, Matt Hammons and Stanley Hammons Jr.
