One son, David, became a music professor and set his father's words to music. Another son, Buddy, became a professional gospel singer. As a member of the Florida Boys, he has recorded several of his father's songs, including "The Secret Place of Prayer."

"My father was a very positive man," said Mrs. Pearson. "He always had a good word. One thing he'd always say is, "Don't worry about it.'

Winford "Tootie' Colson, Corinth mayor

Corinth Mayor Winford L. "Tootie" Colson was a man who cared about his community.

Mr. Colson, 77, of Corinth, died Friday night in St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

"This will be a big loss to the community, both to the town and the water district. He truly tried to do for the people of Corinth," said Grant County Magistrate Richard Austin.

Mr. Colson retired in 1977 as a freight checker with Consolidated Freightways, Cincinnati, and had been mayor of the Grant County city since 1992, said his wife, Wanda Mulligan Colson.

He had previously served on the Corinth City Council and as commissioner of the Corinth Water District. He helped organize the water district for the area in 1982, his wife said.

"He worked with Carol Woodyard, who was magistrate at the time, and they got the water," said Mrs. Colson.

As an elected official, Mr. Colson also served on the Grant County 911 Board.

He was a native of Keefer, only a few miles from Corinth. He was a member of Corinth Christian Church, where he was a deacon, choir member and later, elder. He had held elder status in the church for about 10 years, his wife said. He was also a member of Grant County Men for Christ.

Mr. Colson's nickname, which many people knew him by, went back to his childhood, Mrs. Colson said. As she understood it, he would visit a neighbor lady nicknamed "Tootie," and soon became "Little Tootie." Later the "Little" was dropped.

Mr. Colson had driven a truck and had also farmed. "He liked to work outside. He stayed busy. He had a little section he called his "Back 40,' and would raise a garden there every year," said Mrs. Colson.

Mr. Colson's first wife, Dorothy Roland Colson, died in 1981. Other survivors include his sons, Tommy Colson and Barry Colson, both of Dry Ridge, Roger Colson of Ft. Wright, Jerry Colson of Jacksonville, Fla., Paul Colson and Jeffrey O'Banion, both of Crittenden; daughters, Peggy Faulkner of Williamstown, Judy O'Banion of Glencoe, Sherry Burke of Dry Ridge, Pam Fisk of Morning View, Tammy Warman of Demossville, Winifred Fuller of Ft. Thomas, Kimberly Goff of Lawrenceburg, Ind., and Linda Clower of Erlanger; a stepson, Tommy Bickers of Williamstown; brothers, Thomas P. Colson of Atlanta, Amos Colson of Williamstown, Jackie Colson and Harold Gene "Peck" Colson, both of Corinth; sisters, Alberta Gifford, Martha Bachman and Frances Simpson, all of Williamstown, and Juanita Bruce, Rita Colson and Betty Ellis, all of Corinth; 29 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Corinth Christian Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown, and from noon until the time of services Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Keefer Cemetery, Grant County. Memorials are suggested to Northward Christian Assembly, 10 Highway 22, Falmouth 41040.
