LOU BOWMAN

Lou Ella Blackburn Bowman, 62, wife of Thomas D. “Tommy” Bowman, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007 at her home.

She was a member of the Graefenburg Baptist Church for 51 years, where she had taught Sunday School and served on numerous committees. She taught 27 years in the Shelby County schools and was a member of the retired teacher’s association. She was active in the Relay for Life.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: one son, Howard “H. T.” (Lisa) Bowman of Shelby County; three sisters, Mary (Alvin) Underwood and Minnie (Kenneth) Johns, both of Nicholasville, and Sarah (Donald) Turner of Salvisa; four brothers, Charles (Janice) Blackburn of Alton, Edward (Linda) Blackburn of Bald Knob, Roy (Beverly) Blackburn of Bagdad and Robert (Pam) Blackburn of Frankfort, and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 7 at the Graefenburg Baptist Church. Burial was in Grove Hill Cemetery.

CORDELL BRAGG

Cordell Bragg, 60, of Handy Pike, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Sept. 22, 1946 in Ansted, WV, he was the son of Wilda Cole Bragg of Ansted and the late E. R. Bragg, and was the husband of Alma Marlow Bragg.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and a graduate of Kentucky Business College. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Junction City, where he was a deacon and former Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Danville, the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and the Communication Workers of America. He was a retired technician for the Lucent Company.

In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include: one daughter, Christie (William Jr.) Knable of Greenville, SC; one son, Steven F. Bragg of Campbellsville; three sisters, Rita Phillips and Dinah Withrow, both of Ansted, WV, and Penny Cummins of West Virginia; and two grandchildren.

Services were held Monday at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Dale Denton and Ernest Martin officiating. Burial with military rites was in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were William Knable Jr., Lawrence and Pete Kendrick, Hunter Davis, Kevin Hall and Malcolm Marlowe.

Honorary pallbearers were Alexandra and William Knable III, Dave Wilder, Dan Pyler, Brandon Baker, Bobby Ross, Members of CWA, Franklin Masonic Lodge #28 and the men of Junction City First Baptist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Junction City First Baptist Church Building Fund, 3860 U.S. 127 South, Danville, KY 40422.

GEORGE HADDIX

George Wayne Haddix, 67, of Paradise Camp Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007 at Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born Nov. 13, 1939 in Lexington, he was the son of the late George and Pearl Cassity Haddix, and was the husband of Sharon Biliter Haddix.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and was retired from the US Post Office in Lexington and a member of Herrington Lake Yacht Club.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one daughter, Tracy (John) Hoagland of Lexington; two sons, Christopher Todd Haddix of Harrodsburg and George Wayne (Cindy) Haddix II of St. Louis, MO; two sisters, Barbara Sallee and Carolyn Neal, both of Harrodsburg; one brother, Roy Haddix of Harrodsburg, and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Leland Haddix, and one sister, Rita Smith.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 10 at 1 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday after 5 p.m. and Friday prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Herrington Lake Conservation League.

JAMES LANDERS

James Ray Landers, 78, died Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at the Baptist Hospital East in Louisville.

He was the son of the late Grant and Viola Landers, and was the widower of Joanne Avritt Landers.

He served in the Army National Guard and worked with Greyhound for more than 40 years.

Survivors include: three daughters, Viola Wisner, Linda (Mark) Huber and Karen Landers; two brothers, Charles Thomas Landers of Simpsonville and Lucian Landers of Harrodsburg; one sister, Barbara Ann Brown of Burgin; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Wanda Bugg, Dixie Logue and Norma Sue McMurry.

Services were held Saturday, Aug. 4 at the Arch L. Heady and Son Funeral Home in Louisville. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.

MARGARET MAYES

Cdr. Margaret W. Mayes died Aug. 5, 2007 in Washington , DC.

Born June 30, 1915 in the Central Pike area of Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Nora Woods and Goodloe Mayes.

She was a magna cum laude graduate of Transylvania University, where she was a member of the Chi Omega society. She taught in the Mercer County schools at Salvisa, McAfee, her alma mater, and at the high school. She also served as interim principal at McAfee for one year. She joined the WAVEs during World War II, serving in Hawaii. After serving 22 years in the Navy, she began a career in President Lyndon Johnson’s “War on Poverty” as a financial administrator of all Job Corps Centers east of the Mississippi. She retired from government service in January 1977 and served as a consultant to several corporations.

Her only survivor is Donna M. Mayes of Harrodsburg.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Donald G. Mayes.

No services will be held. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Transylvania University scholarship fund for women.

ARTHUR VOGT

Arthur Carl Vogt, 84, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007, at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

He was the son of the late Edwin E. and Bertha Kosanke Vogt, and was the widower of Phyliss Jean Nichols Vogt.

He was a retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Colonel and a veteran pilot of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was an electronic engineer for several television and radio stations and was the former owner of Vogt Avionics at Bluegrass Airport. He was a member of the Baptist church for over 70 years and had also been a member of the Masonic Lodge and Flying Farmers.

Survivors include: three daughters, Sandra Carol (Lowell) Hamilton of Jackson, Diana Lynn (Bud) Burdette of Harrodsburg and Adonna Lee (Geoffrey) Pryor of Cookeville, TN; two sons, Vincent Paul (Cynthia) Vogt of Lexington and Lyndon Leroy Vogt of Las Vegas, NV; two brothers, Weldon Vogt of Fort Worth, TX, and Elmer Vogt of San Angelo, TX; 13 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday, Aug. 10 at 11:30 a.m. at the W.R. Milward Mortuary - Southland in Lexington with the Rev. J. K. Pierce, Bro. Bob Justus and Bro. Charlie Hutchinson officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday, 4-9 p.m.

SILAS BOTNER

Silas Rock Botner, 3, of Murfreesboro, TN, died Aug. 11, 2007.

Survivors include: his parents, Adam and Amanda Botner; paternal grandparents Greg and Lora Botner of Danville; maternal grandparents, James “Jim” and Louise Hardaway of Nashville, TN; great-grandparents Frances Botner and James and Flona Tewmey, all of Harrodsburg, Nancy Hardaway of Nashville, TN, and Helen Williamson of Welch, OK; one aunt, Ashley Botner, and two uncles, Adam and Andrew Hardaway.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandfathers, Dr. J.A. “Rock” Hardaway, Stanley Botner and Gordon Williamson.

Services were Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Unity Church of Life in Murfreesboro with the Rev. Felicia Blanco-Searcy officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Unity Church of Life in Murfreesboro, the Community Care Fellowship of Nashville or the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Lexington.

Woodfin Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

JAMES DOOLIN

James L. Doolin, 87, of Harrodsburg died Monday, Aug. 13, 2007 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born May 18, 1920 in Garrard County, he was the son of the late Jessie and Susan Elizabeth Strong Doolin, and was the husband of Martha Sherrow Doolin.

He was a retired Standard Products machine operator and was a self-employed farmer until 1981. He was a member of New Testament Baptist Church in Norwood, OH. In August of 1953 he was saved, in 1962 he was ordained as a Baptist minister at the Grace Baptist Church in Danville. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and enjoyed farming and crafts.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one son, Jessie Ronald Doolin and wife Wilma of Harrodsburg; one daughter, Deborah Ruth Mitchell of Harrodsburg; one brother, Charlie Doolin of Cynthiana; three sisters, Virginia Riley of Temple, GA, Grace Graham of Lexington and Betty Noe of Nicholasville; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Jessie Claude Doolin.

Services were held Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007 at 1 p.m. at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Joe Gadd and Bro. John Haynes officiating. Burial with military honors was in Camp Nelson National Cemetery with James Doolin, Justin Doolin, Joe Doolin, Wayne Doolin, Jimmy Doolin and Brian Neighbors serving as pallbearers.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Heritage Hospice, P.O. Box 1213, Danville, KY 40423.

RICHARD HORTON

Richard Cleveland Horton, 50, of Beauford Place, Nicholasville, died Sunday, August 12, 2006.

Born June 17, 1957, he was the son of James Willard and Alice Faye Houp Horton.

He was formerly employed by the City of Wilmore.

He is survived by one son, Wesley Allan Bruner, Nicholasville; two sisters, Lucille (Chris) Abner-Irvin and Leona (Donald) Cheek-Lake Herrington, one brother, James Horton, Nicholasville, two grandchildren, Audrey Short and Tyler Bruner-both of Lexington, and several nieces, nephews and other family members.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, August 17, at the Betts & West Funeral Home, Nicholasville, with Leonard Fitch officiating. Burial will be in Shawnee Run Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Pallbearers will be James Horton, Wesley Bruner, Marty Baker, Chris Houp, Wayne Bush and Chris Abner.

Honorary Bearers will be Stephen Horton, James Willard Horton III, Junior Edwards, James Richard, Mark Cross, James West, Donald Cheek, and Chris Houp Jr.

GRETCHEN LAY

Gretchen R. Lay, 59, of Louisville died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2007 at the Christopher East Nursing Center, Louisville.

Born Oct. 10, 1947 in Washington , D.C., she was the daughter of the late Ballantine Raditick and Kathryn (Fugler) Messenger of Front Royal, VA, and was the wife of Norvie L. Lay.

She was a certified travel consultant for The Travel Authority and was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, where she had been a lector.

In addition to her husband, her survivors include: three daughters, Charity F. (Anthony) Dawson, Gretchen E. Fine, and Diana Dee DeNitto, Stephens City, VA; two sons, Thaddeus Fine and Justice (Leigh) Fine, Front Royal, VA; one sister, Diane Dove, Mt. Vernon, OH; one brother, John Messenger, Alexandria, VA; one stepdaughter, Lee Anne Sullivan, Chicago, IL; and five grandchildren.

A Prayer Service was held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Father Danny Schwendeman. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Catharine College, 2735 Bardstown Road, St. Catharine, KY 40061.

JIMMIE MASSENGILL

Jimmie Robert Massengill, 73, of Lawrenceburg, died Wednesday, Aug 8, 2007 at his residence.

He was the son of the late Tom and Nellie Martin Massengill.

He was born April 16, 1934, in Morgan County, TN. He was a self-employed grocer, member of the Church of God, an Army veteran, and enjoyed nature.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Fox Massengill of Lawrenceburg; two sons, Rob Massengill, Anthony (Stacy) Massengill, all of Lawrenceburg; three sisters, Deene Daughtery, Toby Jean McDaniel, and Judy (Stewart) Sloane, all of Tennessee; one brother, Fred Massengill of Ohio; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ada Greene; and four brothers, Leonard, Irin, Frank and Billy Massengill.

Private graveside service was Saturday, Aug. 11, 2007 at Massengill Farm Cemetery in Anderson County with the Revs. Ott Rose and Stewart Sloane officiating. Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home of Lawrenceburg was in charge of arrangements.
