WAYNE DAVIS

EM Director Dies

Mercer County's Emergency Management Director Wayne Davis, 53, of Harrodsburg died Tuesday at his home.

The cause of death appears to be of sudden cardiac arrest, said Mercer County Coroner Sonny Ransdell. Davis died between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. Ransdell said Davis was toned for a 7:45 a.m. wreck at the U.S. 127 Bypass and Warwick Road. He did not respond, which public safety personnel say, was unlike Davis.

Many in the community expressed sorrow at the loss of Davis.

"Mercer County lost an outstanding citizen and dedicated public servant," said Mercer County Judge-Executive John Trisler. "Wayne Davis was a devoted and loving husband and father. His family always came first in his life which was filled to the brim with volunteering in Mercer County High School sports and serving Mercer County as our emergency management director. Wayne was an avid fan and assistant coach of baseball. He loved the sport very much and was willing to do anything that was needed."

Davis headed the local emergency management agency since September 2004.

“He was very dedicated to his work and provided leadership that has made all our lives safer from potential natural and unnatural emergencies,” said Trisler. “Wayne was a friend to all ‘first responders’ in Burgin, Harrodsburg and Mercer County. He was always prepared and ‘one the scene’ to provide leadership and assistance to those in need.

“Wayne Davis leaves a life filled with many contributions to his fellow citizens and will be greatly missed by all,” added Trisler. “He will be missed both as a colleague and a person friend of mine.”

Davis’ dedication to his job was appreciated by those who worked with him in public safety.

“He was an excellent EM director for police, fire and emergency services, “ said Harrodsburg Fire Chief Chris Dean. “We lost a good friend. Wayne was someone who was real professional, cared about what he died and was a friend to all of us.”

Mercer County’s fire chief felt the same.

“Wayne Davis was one of the most dedicated men I know,” said Glenn Phillips, Mercer County fire chief. “Wayne was always thinking – always prepared for whatever disaster might befall the people. He had an enormous knowledge of the many facets of emergency management and, better yet, had the plan in place to implement response to flood and snow emergencies, biological events and hazardous materials incidents. I can assure you that many of the responses we made in the county wouldn’t have went as well as they did without the support and on-scene help of Wayne Davis.

“He was a friend to community and, most certainly, a friend to the county fire department, and we will all miss him so very much.”

Davis retired in 2004 as assistant director for the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Cabinet. He had bachelor and master of science degrees from Murray State University and was employed by the state government form 1979 to 2004, beginning his career with the state as an environment reviewer.

Along with his emergency management duties, Davis gave his time to several high school sports teams.

“Wayne was a wonderful fellow who donated many hours to the school,” said Terry Yates, Mercer High School principal, adding that Davis was a volunteer baseball coach, kept stats and records for football and kept the scorebook for basketball.

Yates said Davis donated a lot of time to the school system and to the community. Davis helped the school system with disaster relief and set up the school’s weather radios.

“We’re going to miss him greatly,” added Yates.

Davis is survived by his wife, Marianne, and two children, Dawn and Bill.
