Bessie Atkins, 93, of Covington, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a member of the Ninth Street Baptist Church, Covington, and a member of the church's senior choir for more than 40 years.

Survivors include her granddaughter, Glenda Pickens of Cincinnati; and a sister, Dera Conwell of Nashville, Tenn.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the church.

Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington. Jones & Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is in charge of arrangements.

Esther L. Blank, 83, of Latonia, died at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at her home. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Rosedale Baptist Church, Latonia. Her husband, Arthur William Blank, died in 1967.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Jean Meguire of West Chester, Ohio; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were this morning at the church. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Memorials are suggested to the church, 407 E. 45th St., Latonia 41015. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Vernon Culp, 88, of Maysville, died Sunday at Columbia Hospital, Maysville. She was a nurse with Harland and Pikeville hospitals and Hayswood Hospital in Maysville, and in the offices of Drs. Prindle and Franz in Maysville. Her husband, Joseph Lee Culp, died in 1972.

Survivors include a son, Doug Culp of Maysville; a daughter, Jane Lynn Burden of Maysville; a half-sister, Nellie Hardy of Maysville; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Foster's Chapel Cemetery, Mt. Olivet. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Tuesday at Brell Funeral Home, Maysville.

Albert Hitzfield, 85, of Petersburg, died Saturday at Highlands of Ft. Thomas nursing home. He was a retired plant maintenance manager with Schenely Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Ind.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda L. Crigler of Burlington; a brother, Robert Hitzfield of Ft. Myers, Fla.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Petersburg Cemetery.

Glenyce C. Jones, 85, of Dewey, Ariz., formerly of Elsmere, died at 8:38 a.m. Wednesday at Yavapai Regional Medical Center in Prescott, Ariz. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include sons, Denny O. Jones Jr. of San Bernardino, Calif., Glenn Paul Jones of Moreno Valley, Calif., and Claude Jones of Memphis, Tenn.; a daughter, Phyllis A. Frank of Dewey, Ariz.; brothers, Robert Creekmore of Cincinnati and Mark Creekmore of Orlando, Fla.; sisters, Katherine Funk, Ethel Hook and Helen Lutes, all of Covington, and Jessie Eppinghoff of Cincinnati; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery Chapel, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Orchard Street Baptist Church, 815 Orchard St., Elsmere 41018, or the charity of the donor's choice.

Elmer Lea, 79, of Covington, died at 2:31 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown. Arrangements are pending at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.

Herman C. Livengood, 87, of Williamstown, died at 8:15 p.m. Sunday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.

Irene Maddox Mason, 71, of Owenton, died Sunday at his home. She was a homemaker and a member of Long Ridge Baptist Church in Owenton. Her husband, Byron Mason, died in 1996.

Survivors include sons, David Mason of Leesburg, Ohio, and Billy W. Mason of Milford, Ohio; a sister, Blanche Jump of Owenton; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street in Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton. Memorials are suggested to the church, Sparta Road, Owenton 40359.

Dorothy Marie Pieper, 83, of Florence, died at 7 a.m. Saturday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul Church, Florence, where she was also a volunteer.

She was a concession attendant at Turfway Park and a member of St. Ann Auxiliary in Newport.

Survivors include her husband, Lee F. Pieper; sons, Timothy Pieper and Jerry Pieper, both of Florence, Brother Thomas Pieper of Dayton, Ohio, Kenneth Pieper of Erlanger and Michael Pieper of Cincinnati; daughters, Mary Biedenharn of Erlanger and Marla Kelly of Florence; 23 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Ft. Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to Society of Mary Missions, Mount St. John, 4435 E. Patterson Road, Dayton, Ohio 45481.

Samuel Ray Stephenson, 85, of Montclair, Calif., and formerly of Williamstown, died at 7 a.m. Saturday in Montclair following a long illness. Arrangements are pending at Elliston- Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.

Jeffrey Paul Vieth, 27, of Crestview Hills, died Sunday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a former salesman with Applied Sealing, Walton, and with Circuit City stores in Florence and Louisville.

Survivors include his parents, Dennis R. and Marilyn A. Vieth of Crestview Hills; a brother, Scott Anthony Vieth of Crestview Hills; maternal grandparents, Robert J. and Martha Edwards of Crestview Hills; and paternal grandparents, Ralph L. Vieth of Ft. Mitchell and Virginia and Edward Sherman of Erlanger.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Agnes Church, Ft. Wright. Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Service, Cincinnati. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Ft. Mitchell.

Taylor Mill's Elmer Lea, youth coach

Elmer Lea was a quiet man who lived his life to the fullest.

A former semi-pro baseball player, Mr. Lea, 79, coached knothole baseball after his playing days were over. In recent years he and several friends bowled regularly, and he always tended his garden.

"He was very active, right up until Sunday. He drove his car and had a great interest in many things," said Mildred Tebelman Lea, his wife of 52 years.

Mr. Lea, of Taylor Mill, died at 2:31 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Grant County. He was a retired custom wood-worker and fabricator for Peter Kuntz Co., Cincinnati, and a member of American Legion Post 203 in Latonia.

He also was a member of the Carpenters and Joiners Union No. 415 in Cincinnati and the Covington Moose Lodge No. 1469.

Mr. Lea was a hard worker who put his family ahead of his love of sports, his wife said. In fact, Mr. Lea became a knothole baseball coach because his children were interested in the game.

"We have had a wonderful life. He was good with his family and he liked people," Mrs. Lea said. "He was just a good, friendly person."

Other survivors include his sons, Frank Lea of Covington and David Lea of Williamstown; a daughter, Nancy O'Brien of Independence; sisters, Kathryn Deatherage of Covington and Eva Glenn of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be there from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Friends of Juvenile Arthritis Center, c/o Children's Hospital Medical Center, 3333 Burnett Ave., Cincinnati 45229.

Carey Leroy Arnold, 60, of Cynthiana, died Sunday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. He was a retired iron worker, a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Iron Workers Local No. 70, Louisville.

Survivors include his wife, Diana Arnold; a son, Cary L. Arnold Jr. of Cynthiana; daughters, Terri J. Arnold and Beverly McWhorter, both of Lexington, and Becky Arnold and Lori Arnold, both of Cynthiana; a brother, Robert Arnold of Glouster, Ohio; sisters, Cheryl Stanfield of Trimble, Ohio, and Bonnie Hartley of Lexington; and four grandsons.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be there from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to American Lung Association, 11113 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati 45242.

Georgina Pfetzer Brinkman, 76, of Cincinnati, died Sunday at Hilltop Nursing Home, Cincinnati. She was a retired teacher with St. Catherine of Siena Church, Cincinnati.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Brinkman; daughters, Suzanne Bazeley of Cincinnati and Maureen Saner of Batesville, Ind.; sons, Paul Brinkman of Ft. Wright and Greg Brinkman of Ft. Thomas; a brother, Ralph Pfetzer of Park Hills; a sister, Louise "Sis" Lushek of Villa Hills; 16 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Neidhard-Minges Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright. Memorials are suggested to F.R.E.S.H. Fund, c/o St. Catherine Church, 2848 Fischer Place, Cincinnati 45211.
