JOSEPHINE DEVINE

Josephine “Aunt Jo” Devine, 76, of Harrodsburg, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born April 9, 1931 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Thurman “Big Daddy” and Ruth Sanders Goodlett, and was the wife of Forrest B. Devine.

She was a homemaker, baker and seamstress, as well as a volunteer. She was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church and the Mercer County Senior Citizens.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: one daughter, Kathy (Tony) Pankey of Harrodsburg; one son, Mark Devine of Goshen, OH; one sister, Elois Woods of Salvisa, and six grandchildren, Ian and Emily Devine, Angie Pankey, Neal (Christy) Pankey, and Andrew and Suni Ashton.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur E. and Truman Goodlett.

Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 12 at the Fellowship Baptist Church with James Harley and Joe Cooper officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Glenn Devine, Hanley McMullin, Eddie Goodlett, Herbie and Andrew Ashton and T.C. Claunch.

Memorial contributions may be made to The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital, to the Mercer County Senior Citizens, or to the Fellowship Baptist Church.

MIKKI KNIGHT

Mikki Randall Knight, 55, of Harrodsburg, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2007.

Born Jan. 15, 1952 in Talladega, AL, he was the son of Rev. J. W. and Helen Goss Knight of Steele, AL, and was the husband of Deborah Marie Baker Knight.

He was an employee of the Mercer County School System and was a member of the Shakertown Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include: one daughter, Jessica Nicole (Cliff) Sanders of Harrodsburg; one stepson, Christopher (Amy) Hart of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Kimberly (Dale) Burks and Jo (Tim) Reed, both of Steele, AL; one brother, Ron (Joyce) Knight of Steele, AL; paternal grandmother, Valda Brand of Selma, AL, and one grandson.

Services were held Tuesday, Sept. 11 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Joe Smith officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Don Long, Steve Hayden, Rick Morgan, Dale Burks, Carter Logue and Jimmy Howard.

GRETCHEN LAY

Gretchen R. Lay, 59, of Louisville died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2007, in Louisville, survived by her husband, Norvie L. Lay.

Born Oct. 5, 1947, in Washington DC, she was the daughter of the late Ballantine Raditic and Kathryn Fugler Messenger of Front Royal, VA.

Other survivors include her mother, Kathryn F. Messenger of Front Royal, VA; her daughters, Charity F. Dawson (Anthony), Gretchen E. Fine of Louisville, Diana Dee Denitto of Stephens City, VA; sons, Thaddeus Fine and Justice fine (Leigh) of Louisville; step-daughter, Lea Anne Sullivan (Pat) of Chicago, IL; sister, Diane Dove of Mt. Vernon, OH; brother, John B. Messenger of Alexandria, VA; grandchildren, Tristan and Carter Fine of Louisville, Christopher Kilpatrick of Stephens City, VA and Patrick and Anna Sullivan of Chicago.

She was a certified travel consultant for the Travel Authority. She was a member of Saint Margaret Mary Catholic Church and served as a lector and former member of the Parish Council.

A funeral mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church; 7813 Shelbyville Road with the eulogy delivered by the Rev. Dr. Christopher M. Caldwell, pastor of Broadway Baptist Church in Louisville. Visitation was 2-8 p.m. Aug. 14 at Pearson’s; 149 Breckenridge Lane. A visitation was also held at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel in Harrodsburg from 1-3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15 followed by a memorial service at the chapel by Rev. Cynthia M. Collins, Minister to Children, of Broadway Baptist Church in Louisville and a graveside prayer service conducted by Father Danny Schwendeman. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg.

MARY MCDANIEL

Mary Elizabeth Kirkland McDaniel, 83, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007 at her home.

Born in Woodford County, she was a daughter of the late John and Readie Blair Kirkland, and was the widow of Johnie Sanford McDaniel.

She was a member of Little Texas Community Church.

Survivors include: four children, the Rev. James (Wanda) McDaniel of Augusta, GA, Virginia (Bobby) Hayslett of Harrodsburg, and Anna (Mike) Keefe and Johnny (Dean) Combs, both of Lexington; one “second son,” James “J. J.” Brady of Lexington; a special great nephew, Donald C. (Ashley) Myers Jr. of Georgetown and his son Jackson; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Sonia Blair, Wilmore, John Gene and Otha Kirkland; seven sisters, Laura Gardner, Nellie Bingham, Edna Simpson, Sally Kirkland, Kate Berreman, Gladys Taylor Ring and Anna Bowers, and two grandsons, Christopher Andrew and David Alexander Keefe.

Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 12 at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home in Lexington with the Rev. James E. Heard officiating. Burial was in Lexington Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Bobby Hayslett, Dean Combs, Mike Keefe, James Michael McDaniel, Michael Jonathan Keefe and James William McDaniel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, KY 40504, or to the American Heart Association, Kentucky Region, 240 Whittington Parkway, Louisville, KY 40222.

JOSHUA MONROE

Joshua Allen Monroe, 19, of Yosemite, formerly of Burgin, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007 in Casey County.

Born June 23, 1988 in Lexington, he was the son of Joseph Allen (Pam) Monroe of Burgin and Connie Sue Gregory Monroe of Yosemite.

He was a senior at Casey County High School, where he served on the prom committee and was a member of FFA and Young Marines. He was a former baseball and track participant at the Casey County and Burgin schools. He enjoyed tractor pulls and fishing, and was a member of the Burgin Christian Church.

In addition to his parents, survivors include: twin brother Joseph Aaron Monroe of Yosemite; one sister, Gerria Nichole Monroe of Burgin; one step-brother Justin Lear of Burgin; one step-sister, Tiffney Lear of Burgin; maternal grandparents George Ted Gregory of Burgin and Shirley Gregory of Harrodsburg; paternal grandparents Allen and Martha Monroe of Burgin; paternal great-grandmother Dora Estes of Burgin; special cousin, Chris Wexler of Burgin, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services were held Friday Sept. 7, 2007 at the Burgin Christian Church with Mandy Yates officiating. Burial was in Burgin Memorial Gardens

Pallbearers were Derrick Brady, Bobby Williams, Bobby Todd Richards, Josh Peavler, Matthew Monroe and Tyler Long.

Honorary pallbearers were Scott Payton, Tyler Snow, Blake Sexton, Ricky Ryan, John King, Zack Bartley, Corey Edwards, Timothy Pittman and Brent Wells.

Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

DONNIE RILEY

Donnie Riley, 66, of Harrodsburg, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

He was the son of the late Lowell H. and Cleva Belmont Stratton Riley, and was the husband of Nancy Faye Clarkston Riley.

He was a retired custodian supervisor for the Norwood Schools in Cincinnati, OH.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: three daughters, Freida (Harley Joe) Nichols of Cincinnati, OH; Melissa Lynn Coffman and Donna Faye (Donnie) Martin, both of Harrodsburg; two brothers, Lowell “Jiggs” (Gwen) Riley Jr. of Lawrenceburg and William Riley of Somerset; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 12 at the Gash Memorial Chapel in Lawrenceburg with Bro. Paul Readnour officiating.

PATSY SCHOEBEL

Patsy Tatum Schoebel, 65, of Danville, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Hospital in Danville.

Born Feb. 27, 1942 in Casey County, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Dellia Taylor Byrd, and was the wife of Richard Schoebel.

She was a retired Signet employee, a member of the South Fork Ridge Baptist Church in Casey County and enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: two sons, Gary Tatum and Timothy Lee Tatum, both of Harrodsburg; one step-son, Ricky Schoebel of Danville; one sister, Thelma Lister of Harrodsburg; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Robert “Bobby” Tatum; three brothers, James Ralph Byrd, George Mont Byrd and Aubrey Paul Byrd; five sisters, Mayrean Bernard, Christine Louallen, Willa Dean Roy, Lucerrta Lane and Aileen Grider, and one grandson, Ronald Kay Tatum.

Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 12 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Tim Gray officiating. Burial was in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Jamie Lynn Tatum, Robbie Eugene Tatum, Rick Schoebel, Shannon Bryant, David Bartley and Tony Rosenbarger.

HAROLD VOTAW SR.

Harold C. Votaw Sr., 85, of Pioneer, OH, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2007 at his home.

He was born March 23, 1922 in Cornishville.

Services were held Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Lake View United Brethren Church with Pastors Thomas Foltz and Harvey “Oke” Maertin officiating. Burial with military rites was in Floral Grove Cemetery in Pioneer.

Thompson Funeral Home in Pioneer was in charge of arrangements.

BILL WEAVER

Bill Thomas Weaver, 81, formerly of Bowling Green, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007.

He retired from a career in insurance sales throughout Kentucky, following careers that included sales for General Tire in Wabash and Noblesville, IN, and Firestone Industrial Products in Akron, OH, and Milwaukee, WI; teaching at Vincennes University and Bowling Green Business College, and sales manager, vice-president, and president of Graham Manufacturing in Auburn, KY. He was a graduate of Wabash High School in Wabash, IN, and held a bachelor’s degree from Manchester College and a master’s degree from Ball State University. He was an Eagle Scout and a scoutmaster.

Survivors include: two sons, Kim Weaver of Niota, IL, and Noel Weaver of Louisville; two daughters, Jill Weaver Meredith of Cartersville, GA, and Jan Weaver Lanham of Gravel Switch; two brothers, Joe Weaver of Louisville and Phil Weaver of Thousand Oaks, CA, and 10 grandchildren.

Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 5 at Saint Philip’s Episcopal Church. Burial was in Hayesville Cemetery in Gravel Switch.

Pallbearers were Jonathan Lanham, Michael Lanham, Ryan Lanham, Daniel Meredith, Kevin Meredith, Aaron Weaver, Jacob Weaver and Nathan Weaver.

Honorary pallbearers were Kim Weaver, Noel Weaver, Phil Weaver, Joe Weaver, Bob Meredith and Kevin Lanham.

MELISSA YATES

Melissa Lynn Allen Yates, 42, of Lawrenceburg, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007 at the Frankfort Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 5, 1964 in Frankfort, she was the daughter of Thomas and Pearl W. Allen of Lawrenceburg, and was the wife of Melvin B. Yates.

She attended the Anderson County schools and Eastern Kentucky University. She held associate’s degrees from the Kentucky Business College and Sullivan Business College, and was currently working toward another degree from Sullivan. She was an administrative specialist for Kentucky State University in Frankfort. She was a long-time member of the Evergreen Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Youth Choir, a former Vacation Bible School teacher and a member of the Evergreen Usher Board.

In addition to her husband and parents, survivors include: two daughters, Katianna Lynn Yates and Kalissa Allen Yates of Lawrenceburg; two grandmothers, Lucille P. Washington and Corzetta Allen, both of Lawrenceburg; mother-in-law Lynn Yates of Harrodsburg, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services were held Monday, Sept. 10 at the Evergreen Baptist Church with Dr. Barry C. Johnson Sr. officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Hills Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Wallace Barber, Eddie Barber Jr., Michael Lawson, Marty Parks, Kenton Bottoms and Kevin Jones.

Honorary pallbearers were Ernest Guthrie Jr., Merle Cunningham Jr., Leo Wilson, James Dunn, James Lyons, Daryn Harvey, Johnny Walker and Kenneth Gill.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kentucky Breast Cancer Coalition, c/o First Lady’s Celebration of Hope, 1248 Clintonville Road, Paris, KY 40361.

Gash Memorial Chapel in Lawrenceburg was in charge of arrangements.
