VIRGIL CLEMONS

Virgil Ray Clemons, 57, of Shelbyville died Wed., Sept. 26, 2007 in Versailles. He was the son of the late Mary Howard and Howard Clemons.

He was born June 29, 1950 in Breathitt County.

He was a farmer, a mechanic and formerly worked for the railroad. He was a member of the Lawrenceburg United Pentecostal Church.

He is survived by: a daughter, Angela Mae Clemons of IN; his fiancée, Lula Joyce Clemons-Downey of Versailles; adopted children, Jenna Faye Clemons, Aaron Ray Clemons, James Michael Clemons and Michael Dawn Osborne; a grandchild, Mackenzie Logan of Shelbyville; three sisters, Ann McGee of Harrodsburg, Nina (Edward) Buntain of Lawrenceburg, and Brenda Kay Davis of Willisburg; four brothers, Ervin Ray Clemons of Akron, IN, Melvin (LuAnn) Davis of Carrollton, Marvin (Leigh Ann) Davis of Rochester, IN, Rick Lee Davis of Harrodsburg.

Funeral services were held Sunday, September 30, at the Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home, Lawrencebug, with Rev. Michael R. Seidenfaden officiating. Burial was Monday, October 1, in Lawrenceburg Cemetery.

Contributions are suggested to the Virgil Ray Clemons Memorial Fund, c/o Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home, P.O. Box 730, Lawrenceburg, KY 40342.

MARY COX

Mary A. Cox, 84, died Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born July 26, 1923 in Cooksville, IL, she was the daughter of the late Beverly and Lillian (Grimes) Williams, and was the widow of Samuel Cox.

She was a graduate of Rose Hill High School and the Taylor’s Capital Beauty School of Frankfort. She was a licensed cosmetologist for 30 years. She also owned and operated the Talmage Store for many years. She was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church, a Kentucky Colonel, a former 4-H Leader in Anderson County, and served on the board of Mercer County Senior Citizens for several years.

Survivors include: one daughter, Cordelia (Vance) Reed of Harrodsburg; four grandchildren, Michelle Clem, Derrick Allen Drury, Julie (Wendell) Gooch, and Ashley (Shaun) Parker; one step-grandchild, Tracy Reed; six great- grandchildren, two step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three children: Glenn A. Cox, Janet Sue Holbrook and Shirley Ann Drury, and one brother, Walter Carroll Williams.

Services were held Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by John David Lane officiating. Burial was in the Corinth Cemetery, Lawrenceburg.

Pallbearers were George Hollbrook, David Drury, Ralph L. Anderson, Shaun Parker, Addam Gooch and Derrick Drury.

Honorary pallbearers were Vance Reed, Erika Drury, Jacob Drury, Abbey Rashelle Gooch, Allex G. Gooch, Logan Reed and Joshua Reed.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bohon Church of Christ or to the Mercer County Senior Citizens.

CARL DALEY JR.

Carl Daley Jr., 82, of Mercer County, widower of Violet Daley, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Lexington.

Ransdell Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

EDWIN FREEMAN

Edwin Freeman, 85, of Harrodsburg, died Saturday, Sept. 29, at his home after a long illness.

Born December 10, 1921, he was the eldest son of the late Wheeler and Dora Robinson Freeman of Harrodsburg and was the husband of Elsie Kirkland Freeman.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one daughter, Ann Harriet (William) Dedman of Harrodsburg; a brother, Marshall (Anne) Freeman of Harrodsburg, a sister-in-law Martha Kirkland Davis; one grandson Milward (Kathy) Dedman of Harrodsburg; one granddaughter, Marie Hart (David) Rudder of Lexington; three great-grandchildren Ward Dedman, Cawood Dedman and Alex Rudder. He is also survived by two nieces and a great nephew.

He was preceded in death by his brother and business partner, R. C. Freeman.

Edwin served in the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1956-57 and 1962-63, was Mercer County Judge from 1966-1970 and Kentucky State Senator from 1970-74. He was chairman of the Mercer Co. Democratic Party in 1965 and was a Kentucky delegate to the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

He was a founding partner of Cole-Freeman Auction Co. in 1954 with offices in Lexington and Harrodsburg. He later became sole owner of Freeman Auction Co. and was proud to welcome his grandson, Milward Dedman, into the business which he renamed Freeman & Dedman Real Estate and Auction Co. He was a life member of Kentucky Auctioneers Association and received the W. P. Scully Auctioneer Award from the National Auctioneers Association.

In addition to his 53 year career in real estate, Edwin was owner of Freeman and Mercer Tobacco Warehouses in Harrodsburg and was a partner in Garrard Co. Stockyards and Burley Tobacco Warehouses in Danville and Freeman Bros. Tobacco Warehouses in Madison, FL. He also owned and operated cattle and tobacco farms in Mercer, Boyle, Casey and Green counties.

Edwin was the recipient of many awards including the Jaycees Recognition award for Public Service in 1969, Pioneer Award for Public Service from the City of Harrodsburg following his tenure as County Judge, Mercer Chamber of Commerce annual Harrods Award in 1991 and was named Fort Harrod Business and Professional Woman’s Club Boss of the Year in 1982 and 1997.

He was a life long member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church were he taught the Glad Hand Sunday School Class for 35 years and was a 50 year director of the Harrodsburg Baptist Foundation.

He was a Mason and a Shiner, long time member and past president of the Harrodsburg Lions Club, board member of Mercer Federal Savings and Loan, chairman of the board and majority stockholder of the Mercer Co. National Bank, member of the board of trustees of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, past president of Harrodsburg Tobacco Board of Trade.

Edwin had a life long love of road horses which he exhibited for many years. Along with his 2 brothers, he was inducted into the American Road Horse and Pony Association Hall of Fame during the World’s Championship Horse Show in Louisville in 1986. They were also inducted into the Mercer Co. Fair and Horse Show Hall of Fame in 2003. Edwin was the only owner and amateur exhibitor to show and win both the Roadster to Wagon and Roadster to Bike World’s Grand Championship in the same year (1978) an honor which still stands today. Following an accident in the show ring in 1989, he was no longer able to drive himself but continued to enjoy attending horse shows and watching Milward drive family owned roadsters. He was a life member and past national president of the American Road Horse and Pony Association.

Edwin will be most remembered for his love of family, unwavering support and commitment to his community and church and for the countless lives he touched and encouraged throughout his distinguished life and career.

Services were held Monday, Oct. 1, at the Harrodsburg Baptist Church with Dr. Robert DeFoor officiating. (Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery)

Pallbearers were Bud Purdom, Jack Freeman, Bob Terhune, Sonny Hunt, Fred Rice, David Baker, Joe Stevens and Mark Hurst.

Honorary pallbearers were the Directors of the Harrodsburg Baptist Foundation, Glad Hand Sunday School Class, Kenneth Kirkland, Eric Yeast, Louis Yeast, Lee Robinson, Ronnie Sims, Mark Evans, Kenneth Palmer, Tommy Claycomb, Bob Logsdon, Kirk Ogrosky and Woodie Leavell.

Memorials are suggested to the Harrodsburg Baptist Foundation or Heritage Hospice.

EDWIN FREEMAN

Community Leader Edwin Freeman Dies

The Mercer County community lost a longtime businessman and former public official with the death of Edwin Freeman Saturday.

Freeman, 85, died at his home after a long illness.

"He was an awfully good man," said Joe Stevens, who served as one of Freeman's pallbearers.

"He helped me in business and encouraged me, and he never faulted things I did. He was just good from the word 'go.' He loaned me money to start my trucking business, and I paid him back, but he did the same for a lot of people and some I'm sure didn't pay him back. He was just a good person," said Stevens.

Harrodsburg Mayor Lonnie Campbell agreed. "Mr. Freeman lived a full life and made many contributions to his community and church. He was a friend to all and will be missed. I also worked with him on the Harrodsburg Baptist Foundation. He will be missed by this community," the mayor said.

Mercer County Judge-Executive John Trisler ordered the flag in front of the Mercer County Courthouse flown at half mast Monday in honor of Freeman.

"Edwin was a true example of a public servant. He was a very committed leader serving the needs of his community and district," Trisler said.

"He will be most remembered for his love of family, church and for the lives he touched and encouraged throughout his life," the judge added.

Freeman served as a state representative from 1956-57 and from 1962-63, was Mercer County Judge from 1966-70 and a state senator from 1970-74. He was chairman of the Mercer County Democratic Party in 1965 and was a Kentucky delegate to the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Freeman received many awards, was involved in many civic and other organizations and was a lifelong member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church and longtime director of the Harrodsburg Baptist Foundation. He also had a lifelong love of road horses which he exhibited many years.

Along with his two brothers, he was inducted into the American Road horse and Pony Association Hall of Fame during the World’s Championship Horse Show in Louisville in 1986 and into the Mercer Fair’s Hall of Fame in 2003.

Freeman is survived by his wife, Elsie Kirkland Freeman; a daughter, Ann Harriet Dedman; a grandson, State Rep. Milward Dedman; a granddaughter, Marie Hart Rudder; a brother, Marshall Freeman and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his brother and business partner, R. C. Freeman.

LONNIE HAYDEN

George Alonzo “Lonnie” Hayden, 57, died Sunday, Sept. 30, at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 4, 1950 in Paducah, he was the son of the late James William Sr. and Elizabeth Julia Gibbons Hayden, and was the husband of Joan Ann Preston Hayden.

He served in the Marine Corps Reserves and was a former L&N Railroad employee. He was a member of the Catholic Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two sisters, Julia Frances Cecil of Louisville and Mary Joan Azinger of Oregon, and one brother, Leonard Agustus Hayden of Jacksonville, FL.

He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Thomas Hayden, and two brothers, James William Jr. and Joseph Herbert Hayden.

Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 3 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Father Danny Schwendeman officiating. Burial was in the Ebenezer Cemetery in Salvisa.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Church Restoration Fund, c/o Amalie Preston, 2072 Oregon Rd., Salvisa, KY 40372.

PERRY HOWARD

Perry W. Howard, 56, of Harrodsburg, died Sunday, Sept. 30, at The Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born March 10, 1951 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Harney “Red” and Pauline McCoun Howard Jr., and the husband of Freida Combs Howard.

He was a retired shipping clerk from Trane and a member of the Ebenezer Church of Christ.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two sons, Scott (Cheryl) Howard of Harrodsburg and Chad (Staci) Howard of Walton; two brothers, Jimmy (Yvonnia) Howard and Steven Lynn Howard, both of Harrodsburg; mother-in-law, Leola Combs and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Joy Sue Howard.

Services were held Wednesday, Oct. 3 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with John Kesel and Terry Morrison officiating. Burial was in Ebenezer Cemetery in Salvisa.

Pallbearers were Troy Howard, Lee Darland, Johnny Halderman, Tom Gullion, Hobert Cheatham and Larry Petyon.

Honorary bearers were Dr. George Noe, J.C. Sawyers, Michael Bates, Bobby Ross, Michael Buchanan and Lindon Smith.

Memorial contributions may be made to Heritage Hospice, or to the Ebenezer Cemetery Fund.

KATHERINE LUCAS

Katherine Lucille Lucas, 70, died Sunday, Sept. 30, at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Jan. 29, 1937 in Casey County, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Laura Bell Stafford Johnson, and the widow of Lowell King and James Walker Lucas.

She attended Shawnee Run Baptist Church and enjoyed singing with the gospel group, Witness and quilting.

Survivors include: two sons, Dennis King of Lancaster and James Shannon Lucas of Harrodsburg; two daughters, Debbi Campbell of Harrodsburg and Vivian McCarty of Somerset; three brothers, Estill Johnson of Liberty, Jerald Johnson of Rose Lawn IN and Jimmy Johnson of Indiana; three sisters, Judy Daniels and Fern Johnson, both of Casey County and Dee Johnson of Indiana; 15 grandchildren, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and her special friend Alice Herman.

She was preceded in death by one son, David Johnson and one sister, Irene Harness.

Services were held Tuesday, at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Ralph Neal officiating.

Burial was in Burgin Memorial Gardens with Brian Wingard, Jeremy McCarty, Justin King, Nicholas King, Christian Campbell and Chad Beasley serving as pallbearers.

SAMUEL LEE

Samuel David Lee II, 34, of Nicholasville, formerly of Lawrenceburg, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 26, 2007.

He was the son of Brenda Bailey Robinson, and her husband, Ricky, Lawrenceburg, and Samuel David Lee, and his wife, Linda, of Lexington.

He was a 1992 graduate of Anderson County High School, a member of Southland Christian Church where he served on the First Touch Ministries, and a member of the Wild Turkey Federation. He was a 10 year veteran in the shipping department at Hitachi Automotive Products in Harrodsburg.

Besides his mother and father, he is survived by: a brother, Grant Taylor Robinson; step grandmother, Elsie Robinson, both of Lawrenceburg; half-sister, Suzanne Nicole Lee, Lexington; two step-sisters, Michelle Shipley, Shelbyville, and Monica Becherer, Cumming, GA.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mattie Brandenburg and Chester H. Bailey, and Noah and Irene Sams Lee.

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 29, at the Southland Christian Church chapel in Nicholasville. Burial was in Lawrenceburg Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trooper Island, Inc., Kentucky State Police, P.O. Box 473, Albany, KY 42602.

Casket bearers were Vic Mollett, Jimmy Johns, Brett Short, John Giles, Bruce Ham, and Chester Bailey.

Honorary bearers were Brad Highley, Brian Bivins, Trooper Joe Milam, and Troopers with the Kentucky State Police.
