DUB ALLEN

Alvin “Dub” Allen, 64, of Harrodsburg, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008.

Born June 11, 1943, he was the son of the late Alvin and Thelma Allen.

He was a member of the Elkhorn Baptist Church in Versailles.

Survivors include: two daughters, Debra (Richard) Reed and Belinda Gail Allen; one son, Rex Allen; one step-daughter, Amy (Will) Davis; one step-son, Westly (Jeri) Baker; two sisters, Joyce (Donald) Eldridge and Grace Helton and a special friend, Judy Baker.

He was preceded in death by one son, Michael David Allen and one brother, George Allen.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time at Ransdell Funeral Chapel in Harrodsburg.

ALVIN ALLEN

Alvin D. Allen, 64, of Harrodsburg, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born June 11, 1943 in Lexington, he was the son of the late Alvin D. and Thelma Mae Johnson Allen Sr..

He was a retired farmer and stone mason.

Survivors include: two daughters, Debra (Richard) Reed of Jacksonville , FL and Belinda Allen of Florahome, FL; one son, Rex D. (Jo Ann) Allen II of Florahome, FL; two sisters, Joyce (Donald) Eldridge of Palm Beach, FL and Grace Helton of Harrodsburg and five grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Friday, Jan. 25, 2008 at the Lexington Cemetery.

BELINDA ALLEN

Belinda Gail Allen, 44, of Florahome, FL, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

Born Nov. 5, 1963 in Versailles, she was the daughter of Patricia Sandifer Newmans and the late Alvin “Dub” Allen.

In addition to her mother, survivors include: one son, Nicholas Allen of Interlachen, FL; one sister, Debra (Richard) Reed of Jacksonville, FL; one brother, Rex (Jo Ann) Dovall Allen II of Florahome, FL and two aunts, Joyce (Donald) Eldridge of Palm Beach, FL and Grace Helton of Harrodsburg.

She was preceded in death by a brother, David “Mike” Allen.

Memorial Services will be conducted at a later date in Florida.

SUSIE ANDERSON

Susie Marie Bow Anderson, 70, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008 in Anderson County.

Born Oct. 10, 1937 in Cumberland, CO, she was the daughter of the late Stephen Tyler and Mary Lula King Bow and was the widow of Vernon Anderson.

She was a babysitter, caregiver and a member of Burgin United Methodist Church where she was active in the United Methodist Women’s Group. She was active in the Mercer Senior Citizens.

Survivors include: two sons, Stephen Vernon Anderson of Lawrenceburg and Stanley Ray Anderson of Wellington; two brothers, Russell Leon Bow of Glendale and Stephen Tyler Bow Jr. of California; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Randall Bow.

The funeral was held Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Doug Lester officiating. Burial was in the Burgin Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Stephen Vernon Anderson, Stanley Ray Anderson, Cory Anderson, David Stagner and Dakota Anderson.

Alexander and Royalty was in charge of the arrangments.

VERLIN BURNS

Verlin Hugh Burns, 74, of Mackville, died. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008 in the emergency room of Spring View Hospital in Lebanon.

Born Aug. 30, 1933 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Reco and Lillie Warner Burns and was the husband of Jean Bishop Burns.

He was a member of the Mackville Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was a 1951 graduate of Mackville High School, a retired rural mail carrier and formerly owned and operated a milk hauling business. He was a charter member of the Mackville Lions Club, a volunteer leader of the Mackville Boosters, served on the board of the Mackville Community Development, was very instrumental in the renovating of the old Mackville School into the Mackville Community Center and also served on the Lincoln Trail Area Development District Board of Directors.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: five daughters, Beverly (Bobby) Humes, Karen (Gary) Carney and Jackie (Bobby Lee) Russell, all of Mackville, Janice (Tim) Hall of Lexington and Renee (Mark) Burns-Hinton of Frankfort; one sister, Nona Schildknecht of Louisville; two brothers, Randall (Juanita) Burns of Cardwell and Mitchell (Dotty) Burns of Mackville; 14 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jonathan Burns Hinton and a sister, Velma Jenkins.

The funeral was held Saturday, Jan. 26 at Mackville Baptist Church with Rev. Micah Carter, Rev. David Gifford and Bro. Fred Whitacre officiating. Burial was in Peter Cemetery at Mackville.

Pallbearers were Jared Russell, Tyler Russell, Christopher Hinton, Zachary Hinton, William Perkins, Jerry Burns, Gary Jenkins, Donald Jenkins and Bob Burns.

Honorary pallbearers were Deacons of Mackville Baptist Church and the Adult Men and Women’s Sunday School Class.

Carey and Son Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

EVELYN ENDICOTT

Evelyn Maureen Bottom Endicott, 91, of Lawrenceburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008 at the Heritage Hall Care Center in Lawrenceburg.

Born Dec. 16, 1916 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Fay Nelson and Mae Mattherly Bottom and was the widow of the late William Oney Endicott.

She was the former co-owner of William’s Lumber & True Value Hardware in Lawrenceburg, a member of the Sand Spring Baptist Church, former member of the Swinging Saints, member of the Sand Spring Baptist Church Choir, a former nursery worker, GA Leader, vacation bible school worker, helped organize the Sand Spring Senior Adult Group, a former member and past president of the Lawrenceburg Business and Professional Women’s Club and former member of the Lawrenceburg Women’s Club.

Survivors include: one son, William F. (Mary Frances) Endicott of Sacramento, CA; one sister, Lorraine Bottom of Harrodsburg; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The funeral was held Friday, January 25, 2008 at the Sand Spring Baptist Church with Dr. Mike Hamrick and Dr. Dave Charlton officiating. Burial was in the Lawrenceburg Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to be made to the Sand Spring Baptist Church, 1616 Harrodsburg Road, Lawrenceburg, KY 40342 or Hospice of the Bluegrass, 208 Steele St., Frankfort, KY 40601.

CHRISTINE ERVIN

Christine E. Ervin, 72, of Mercer County, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2008 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

Born Sept. 9, 1935 in West Liberty, she was the daughter of the late Chester and Edith Goodall Frisby and was the wife of Lewis Kelly of Wilmore.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Worldwide Church of God.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: three daughters, Angie (Fred) Herald of Mercer County, Sue Dunn of Wilmore and Sharon (Freddie) Boswell of Mercer County; one son, Randy Ervin of Mercer County; two brothers, Carrol Eugene Frisby of Burgin and David Frisby of East Bernstadt; ten grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a husband, James Travis Ervin, a son, Rex Ervin and a grandson Bryan Scott Boswell.

The funeral was held Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Pastor Ron Dick and Elder John Bailey officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Travis Boswell, Nathan Lewis, Jamie Abney, Stevie Jewell, Willie Frisby and Roger Frisby.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Adult Day Center and/or Heritage Hospice, P.O. Box 1213, Danville, KY 40423.

LOTTIE HIATT

Lottie “Bea” Hiatt, 86, of Nicholasville, widow of James Walter Hiatt, died Friday, January 25, 2008.

She was the daughter of the late James Henry and Nannie Calico Tyree.

She was also a retired medical techician and was a member of Tates Creek Christian Church where she was active in the Hannah Lydia Circle, the Better with Age Group and the Cross and Crown Sunday School Class. Mrs. Hiatt loved to travel and was known as a “World Traveler.”

Survivors include: four nephews, Darrell Rogers, Paint Lick, J. W. Tyree, Lexington, Merle Tyree, Georgetown and Glenn Miller, Danville; two nieces, Norma J. Benge, Lexington and Mildred Faye Layton, Harrodsburg; several great nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Francis Tyree.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 29, at the the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home – Harrodsburg Road, Lexington. Burial was in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens.

Contributions are suggested to Hospice of Jessamine County, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, KY 40504 or the Tates Creek Christian Church Building Fund, 3150 Tates Creek Road, Lexington, KY 40502.

TONY HUFFMAN

Tony Huffman, 50, of Harrodsburg, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born June 26, 1957 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of Katherine Louise Trisler Huffman and the late Clarence Huffman.

He was a former cabinet maker, a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church, a member of the Mercer Masonic Lodge 777 F&AM, Oleika Shrine Temple, St John #125, Daviess Chapter #29, an Ambassador to Masonic Homes, and Vice President of the Wilderness Shrine Club, W.R. Selby Sr. Chapter #4, Danville Council #3 and the Ryan Commandery #17.

In addition to his mother, survivors include: two sisters, Lisa (James) Rousey of Stanford and Brenda Hall of Harrodsburg; one half brother, Clarence Huffman Jr. of NJ and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held Saturday, January 26 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Lewis Walter officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mitch Cocanougher, Kenny Burkhead, Don, David and Mike Huffman, Wayne and Danny Jackson and Danny Rawlings.

Honorary pallbearers were Eddie Hudson, Eric Merriman, David Derringer, Robbie Huffman, Johnny Rawlings and the Mercer Lodge 777 F&AM Members.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner Children’s Hospital.

RICHARD JOHNSON

Richard Greene Johnson MD, 83, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008.

Born June 3, 1921 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late Greene L. Johnson and Ann W. Stout and was the husband of Agnes Johnson.

He was a member of the Board of Trustees at Centre College, served in WWII, a member of the clinical faculty of the UCLA School of Medicine, medical Director of the Westwood Psychiatric Hospital and was a member of the Southern California Psychiatric Society where he served as president and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two sons, Richard G. (Barbara) Johnson Jr and Craig Wallace Johnson; two daughters, Carole (Jim) Bultema and Holly Johnson and eight grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Cave Hill Cemetery.

A reception will follow the service from 4 to 6 p.m. on the third floor of the Brown Hotel in downtown Louisville.

The family plans to establish a scholarship at Centre College in his memory.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the President’s office at Centre College.

LINDA PHILLIPS

Linda Merrick Phillips, 55, of Burton Circle, Danville, died Monday, January 28, 2008, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Sunday, December 21, 1952, in Boyle County, she was a daughter of Bernice Sims Merrick of Danville and the late George P. Merrick.

Linda was a licensed CNA and worked for BHI Assisted Living in Danville.

Survivors include: her husband, whom she wed on August 20, 1999, Charlie Phillips; her mother, Bernice Sims Merrick of Danville; four sons, Jimmy Galloway, Jr. of Liberty, Brandon C. (Karen) Galloway of Charleston, NC, Wayne T. (Karen) Phillips and Jared T. Phillips, both of Danville; four daughters, Leslie (Randy) Knies of Harrodsburg, Natasha Galloway of Danville, Kelly (Allen) Ryan of Danville, Vicki (Ron) Moore of New Albany, IN; two brothers, George P. “Buddy” Merrick IV of Forkland and Robert Elwood “Bobby” Merrick of Danville; seven grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Lisa Sargent.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 31, at the Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home in Danville with Bro. Tim Mathis officiating. Burial will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jared and Wayne Phillips, Allen Ryan, Bob Davenport, Gordon Montgomery and Andrew Gourley.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
