MAURICE STRATTON SR.

Maurice Robert Stratton Sr., 90, of Lawrenceburg, died Sunday, March 30, 2008 at the UK Medical Center in Lexington.

He was born in Mercer County to the late George Stanley and Alpha Rhea Holt Stratton.

He was a retired rural mail carrier; a member of the Alton Christian Church and Beaver Creek Lodge #335; a 1936 graduate of Bloomfield High School; and a WWII Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force.

He is survived by: his wife of 66 years, Luella Duncan Stratton; two daughters, Susie (Clyde) Pennington, Bardstown, and Rita (Mike) McDonald, Lawrenceburg; one son, Maurice Robert Stratton Jr., Lawrenceburg; eight grandchildren, James Norris, George Stratton, Leah Slone, and Hannah McDonald, all of Lawrenceburg, Amy Carney, Ohio, Rhonda Childress, Steven Pennington, and Jason Pennington, all of Bardstown; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry Stratton and Howard Stratton, and three grandchildren, Carl Wayne Stratton, Richard Darrin Stratton, and Robert Greg Stratton.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 3, at the Gash Memorial Chapel, Larenceburg, with Bro. Noal Cotton and Bro. Robert McClain officiating. Burial will be in Highview Cemetery in Chaplin with military rites.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, with Masonic Rites at 7:30 p.m.

Casketbearers were James Norris, George Stratton, Steven Pennington, Jason Pennington, Rodney Slone, and Jeff Childress.

Honorary bearers were Harry Michael Stratton, Ira Crask, Leah Slone, Hannah McDonald, Rhonda Childress, Marvin Robinson, Charles Woods, and Woody Gash.

Martha Griffin Benefit

A benefit for Martha Griffin who died suddenly on March 5 will be held from 1 a.m. to 9 p.m. on April 5 at Youngs Park Shelter house. There will be food and merchandise available for purchase.

The family is trying to help her children, Timmy and Terry Griffin, to pay for funeral expenses.

Any cash donations can be made to Alexander and Royalty Funeral home at 304 E. Lexington St, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

LOUISE BAILEY

Louise W. Bailey, 89, of Harrodsburg, died Thursday, April 3, 2008 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born May 28, 1918 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Brunell Bradshaw Worley and was the widow of Stephen L. Bailey.

She was a former employee of Mercer County ASCS office, a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church and was a volunteer for the Red Cross Bloodmobile.

Survivors include: one son, Stephen (Georgetta) Bailey of Harrodsburg; three grandchildren; two step grandchildren and three step great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Martha McNees.

The funeral was held Saturday, April 5 at the Harrodsburg Christian Church with Phil Williams, Dr. John Chenault and Mark Thompson. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jessie Spaulding, Aaron Bailey, Bruce Patterson, Bruce Wade, Tim Lewis, Charles Lewis, Sonny Thompson and Joe Stevens.

Honorary pallbearers were Margot Perkins, Nancy Much, Michelle Griffin and members of the Goodwill Sunday School Class.

MARY CHENAULT

Mary Evelyn Vandyke Chenault, 87, of Harrodsburg, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at St. Joseph East Hospital in Lexington.

She was born in Harrodsburg. She was the widow of George Albert Chenault, and daughter of the late Rev. John and Hester Brown Vandyke.

She was a former nurse's aid at Central State Hospital and Eastern State Hospital; a member of Evergreen Baptist Church in Lawrenceburg, senior choir, missionary society, and senior Sunday school class; a member of the Harrodsburg Homemakers; and a 1939 graduate of West Side High School in Harrodsburg.

She is survived by four daughters, Alice Brown and her husband, Victor, Alberta Burns and her husband Alpatrick, and Doris Harvey and her husband, James Jr., all of Lawrenceburg, and Veronica Rose, Cincinnati; 12 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

A son, Eddie Chenault, preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 4, at the Gash Memorial Chapel in Lawrenceburg with Rev. John Short officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested as donations to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 208 Steele Street, Frankfort, KY 40601.

Casketbearers were Victor Brown, Alpatrick Burns, James Harvey Jr., Kenton Bottoms, Kenton Bottoms II, and Melvin Yates.

Honorary bearers were Alpatrick Burns II, Roy Toney, and Clifford Cunningham.

SADIE HOWARD

Sadie L. Howard, 81, of Harrodsburg, died Thursday, April 3, 2008 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born Jan. 20, 1927 in Harlan, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Emma Helton Howard.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Grapevine Christian Church.

Survivors include: two sisters, Ada Smith of Xenia, OH and Elizabeth Summers of Beaver Creek, OH and one brother, Earnest Howard of Asher.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harvey andClell Howard and a sister, Nancy Coleman.

The funeral was held Saturday, April 5 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel. Burial was in the Grapevine Cemetery, Harrodsburg.

ORA JOHNSON

Ora Adkinson Johnson, 90, died Friday, April 4, 2008 at the Charleston Health Care Center in Danville.

Born April 6, 1917 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Ella Baker Adkinson and was the widow of Carl Lincoln Johnson.

She was retired as District Administrator for South Central Bell, was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church where she held various offices, a lifetime member of Telephone Pioneers of America and was active in various charities.

Survivors include: three nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Miriam J. Mason.

The funeral was held Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at Gethsemane Baptist Church with Bro. Steve James officiating. Burial was in Springhill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gethsemane Baptist Church Building Fund.

Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

THOMAS MOORE

Thomas Irving Moore, 83, of Harrodsburg, died Monday, April 7, 2008 at the Hospice Care Center, Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born July 5, 1924 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late William I. and Anne O. Meredith Moore and was the husband of Mary Frances Yankey Moore.

He was a 1942 graduate and valedictorian of Harrodsburg High School and received his B.A. from Centre College, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, was a farmer, served as a secretary and three term president of the Mercer County Farm Bureau and was a member of the Mercer Co. Conservation Board.

He also served during WWII as a petty officer and radar operator aboard the USS Benner. He was a member of the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a Sunday School Teacher and Elder and served on various committees.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one daughter, Anne Thomas Moore Cox of Lexington; one son, Francis “Frank” E. Moore of Vero Beach, FL; one brother, Joseph F. Moore and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William M. Moore.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2008 at the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church with Dr. Arthur J. DeYoung and Leon Mayo officiating.

Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and at 1 p.m. until the time of service on Thrusday at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

Pallbearers will be Larry Moore, Steve Moore, Sam Moore, Stan Moore, Harold Davis, Clyde Little, Doug Eades, Stanley Riney, Charles Ison, Garland Yankey, Bill Waggener, Doug Brown and Miller Horn, Jr.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive Lexington, KY 40504 or to the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church, 326 South Main Street, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

MELISSA SAPP

Melissa Lynn Chesser Sapp, 27, Lebanon, died Thursday April 3, 2008, at her residence.

Born April 28, 1980, in Washington County, she was a social worker at LaRue County Communicare, Inc.

Survivors include: her husband, William "Rick" Sapp of Lebanon; a daughter, Madison Paige Sapp of Lebanon; parents, Allen and Vicky Chesser of Springfield; and maternal grandparents, Clay and Nancy Barger of Burgin.

She was preceded in death by: her paternal grandparents, Herman and Susie Chesser.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 7, at the Bosley Funeral Home, Lebanon, with burial in Lebanon National Cemetery. Rev. Bud Owen officiated.

Pallbearers were John Garrett, Chuck York, Tony Begley, Jason Tatum, Brandon Lampkin and Steve Looft.

Bosley Funeral Home, Lebanon, was in charge of the arrangements.

MARGARET SILVERS

Margaret Wilson Owens Silvers, 80, widow of Edward Silvers died Saturday, April 5, 2008 at the Bradford Square Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Frankfort.

A native of Georgetown, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Sarah Gaines Wilson and was a member of the Nazarene faith.

Survivors include: four sons, Jerry and Billy Owens, both of Orlando, Wayne Owens, Harrodsburg and Marvin Owens, Georgetown; four daughters, Alma Johnson, Georgetown, Margaret Crowe, Stamping Ground, Betty Young and Alberta Shields, both of Frankfort; 28 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mable Murphy and Lola Bernard, both of Versailles.

She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Owens, eight siblings and the father of her children, Delmar Owens.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 10, at the Johnson’s Funeral Home in Georgetown by Rev. Estill Everman. Burial was in the Georgetown Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Roy Walls, Dillard and Cameron Caldwell, Mike Shields, Robert Young and Jim Crowe.

ALICE SIMMONS

Alice B. Simmons, 98, of Leesburg, OH died Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at the Heartland of Hillsboro.

She was born June 21, 1909 in Harrodsburg, the daughter of the late William H. and Anne Peavler Butler.

Mrs. Simmons was a graduate nurse and an Lab Technician for the State of Ohio for over 29 years.

She is survived by: one niece, Lee Ann Heineman of Westerville, OH one nephew, Paul Heinemann of Dallas, TX; two great nephews, Michael Ragland of Frankfort, and John Ragland of Indianapolis, IN.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Simmons in 1973, three sisters, Lucille Young, Lola Walker and Dorothy Heineman and three brothers, Buck Butler, Riker Butler and Marian Lay.

Services were held Saturday, April 5, at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro, OH. Pastor John Fitzgerald officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Leesburg.
