SAMUEL WHITEHEAD

Samuel Lee Whitehead, 66, of Harrodsburg died July 30, 2008 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 22, 1942 in Emory Gap, TN, he was the husband of Mary Margaret Whitehead of Harrodsburg.

He was an employee of Southern Railway.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: four daughters, Rose (Robert) Fryel of Danville, Sherry (Wesley) Ray of Ohio, Bonita Halloman of Lexington and Beverly (Chris) Ross of Danville; four sons, Samuel Whitehead Jr. of Lexington, George (Kim) Whitehead of Atlanta, GA, Travis Whitehead of Harrodsburg and Curtis (Suzanne) Whitehead of Louisville; four brothers, George (Anna) Whitehead of Danville, James Roberts of Knoxville, TN, William (Lorraine Whitehead of Kingston, TN and Jackie (Felicia) Roberts of Spring City, TN; three sisters, Peggy (Gene) Cozart of Rockwood, TN, Carolyn (Al) Russell of Harriman, TN and Edna (Clifford) Worthy of Harriman, TN; 22 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

The funeral was held Aug. 4 at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Couter officiating. Burial was in Hill-N-Dale Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Victor Delaney, Michael Gallaher, Walter Love, Stewart Siler, Bobby Burton and Larry Taylor.

Honorary pallbearers were Charles Aleorn, Nathan Johnson, Gilbert Gallaher, Michael Smith, Perry Thompson and Clark Walker.

Smith Jackson Funeral Home in Danville was in charge of the arrangements.

FRANCES WRIGHT

Frances Simpson Wright, age 67, of Danville, died Friday, August 1, 2008 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

Born Monday, June 30, 1941 in Lebanon, she was a daughter of the late Grand and Gracie Wilkerson Wright.

She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She was an avid bowler and golfer as well as a huge sports fan, especially of UK Football.

Survivors include: two sons, Steven (Cathy) Wright of Danville and Wesley Scott (Amy) Wright of Harrodsburg; one daughter, Penny (Danny) Rogers of Lawrenceburg; two brothers, Tommy and Wesley Simpson, both of Lebanon; two sisters, Gladys Buckler of Bardstown and Brenda Simpson of Lebanon; and seven grandchildren, Renee and Jason Wright, Tram and Zach Rogers, and Alexis, Kayla and Timothy Wright.

She was predeceased by a sister, Elsie Tate.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 5, at the Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home, Danville, with Rev. Ernest Martin officiating. Burial was in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Luke Wright, Todd Simpson, Jason Wright, Tram Rogers and Zach Rogers.

Memorial contributions may be made to Stanford Golden Living Center.

HARVEY FITZPATRICK JR.

Harvey David Fitzpatrick Jr., 70, died Sunday August 9, 2008.

Born December 4, 1937, in Danville, he was the son of the late Harvey D. and Beulah Cecil Fitzpatrick.

He was a graduate of Danville High School and attended First Baptist church on Broadway. Harvey was a caretaker for many years for his grandmother and mother and worked part-time at the Antique Mall in Harrodsburg, Ky. He never met a stranger and had a special talent for making people laugh.

Survivors include his two closest cousins, Sheila Craig Sheehan and Gary (Linda) Craig, and many more cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandmother, Etta Mae Cecil, and his aunt, Hazel Craig.

A graveside service was held at noon Wednesday, August 13, at Bellevue Cemetery with Rev. Tim Mathis.

Pallbearers were Randy Rose, Tim Rose, Larry Yager, Aaron Sheehan and Chester Kavanaugh.

Honorary pallbearers were Joe Gibson and Jackie Vaught.

STELLA GAFFNEY

Stella Mae Gibson Gaffney, 77, of Danville Road in Garrard County, passed away Saturday, August 9, 2008 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born January 13, 1931 in Garrard County, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Neva Elliott Gibson. She was the widow of the late Floyd Gaffney.

Stella was a member of Hyattsville Baptist Church, where she was very active in the Joymakers Club. She also served as the past Treasurer for DAV, an officer for AARP, and was a member of the Lincoln County Homemakers. Stella served as a long-time alternationist to many people in the community.

Stella leaves behind: two daughters, Brenda Ruth (Louie) Hammons of Stanford and Linda Carol Logan of Frankfort; one brother, William G. “Billy” (Joann) Gibson of Daytona, FL; five granddaughters, Tracy Carol (Charles) Curtsinger of Harrodsburg, Lana Ruth (Scott) Ogle of Rome, Georgia, Christy Lynn (Eric) Anderson of Lexington, Lisa Anne (Adam) West of Eminence, and Sherry Dawn Logan of Frankfort; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 12, at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Lancaster with Bro. Louie Hammons, Bro. Gary Durham, and Bro. Scott Ogle officiating. Burial was in Camp Nelson National Cemetery.

Active Pallbearers were Charles Curtsinger, Scott Ogle, Eric Anderson, Adam West, Keith Brooks, and Art Gibson.

Honorary Pallbearers were the granddaughters, Russ and Beulah Sebastian, Marilyn Brown, Mary Brown Caldwell, Virginia Ray, Barbara Ray, Betty Howard, Carolyn Whittaker, Joe and Mary Rogers, and Linda Priddy.

Ramsey Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

CYNTHIA JOHNSON

Cynthia Vernia Leavell Johnson, 38, of Indianapolis, IN, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008 at her home.

Born Dec. 21, 1969 in Lancaster, she was the daughter of Samuel and Cathy Wheat, III, of Harrodsburg and Betty and Joe Jackson of Lancaster and she was the wife of Terry Johnson.

She was a program director in the social services department of Indiana Mentor and a member of the Eastern Star Baptist Church in Indianapolis.

In addition to her husband and parents, survivors include: two daughters, Cerenity B. Barker and Cerista Johnson, both of Indianapolis, IN; two brothers, Keith Leavell of Columbus, OH and Robert Leavell of Lexington; three sisters, Sandy (James) Leavell Headley, Katie Leavell, and Betty Angel Leavell, all of Lancaster; one grandmother, Lillie (Turner) Vandyke Doty of Lexington; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Carlos and Mary E. Leavell.

The funeral was held Monday, Aug. 11, 2008 at the Centennial Baptist Church in Harrodsburg with Elder J.D. Short, III and Brother Donald Wayne Smith officiating. Burial was in the Duncan Town Cemetery in Lancaster.

Pallbearers were Dennis Johnson, Derrick Johnson, William Lathon Leavell, George Yeast, Julius Yeast, Larry Yeast and William “Bo” Yeast.

Honorary pallbearers were Clarence Johnson, Jasper Johnson, Skyler Johnson, Daniel Joseph Leavell, Dillon Leavell, Shawn Paul Leavell, Trevor Short and Jordan Yeast.

The Parks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

THOMAS JONES SR.

Thomas Edward Jones Sr., 57, of Harrodsburg, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

Born Nov. 27, 1950 in Fayette County, he was the son of the late Allen P. and Lou Ella Gibbs Jones and was the husband of Shirley Green Jones.

He was an employee at The Brick Yard in Harrodsburg for a number of years and attended the St. Peter African Methodist Episcopal Church in Harrodsburg.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one son, Thomas E. Jones, Jr. of Georgetown; one daughter, Kristi Jones of Lexington; two brothers, Allen (Mary) P. Jones, Jr. and James (Royce) Jones, both of Lexington; five sisters, Mary Davis, Elizabeth Madison, Gaynell Turner, Wilma Burdett and Carolyn Allen, all of Lexington; several nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Wm “Bunny Jones, William Conner and Charles Conner and by three sisters, Hattie Barbour, Gladys Hardin and Gloria Conner.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, at the St. Peter African Methodist Episcopal Church with Pastor Ralph Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery.

Visitation will be 6 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Parks Funeral Home and after 10 a.m. on Friday at the church.

Pallbearers are Jeremy LeMonds, Donnie French, Jr., Todd Keys, Logan Woods, Russell LeMonds and John Peavler.

Honorary pallbearers are Josh Woods, John Phillips, Donnie French, Sr., Dillon French, Dalton French and David French.

LOIS KIDD

Lois Catherine Kidd, 71, of Lexington, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008 at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

Born June 5, 1937 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late John and Lillie Roseline Burns Horn and was the widow of Chester Kidd.

She was employed by the Fayette County School System and was a member of the Grace Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Cathy A. Kidd of Louisville; two sons, Allen J. (Suzanne) Kidd of Prattville, AL and Mark A. (Kristin) Kidd of Wadsworth, OH; three sisters, Birdie Gooch of Danville, Valeria Mae Kidd of Harrodsburg and Mary Traynor of Lexington and six Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Horn and three sisters, Laura B. Devine, Alma Horn and Florence Kidd.

The funeral was held Sunday, Aug. 10 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Don Reed, Terry Freeman and Mike Greer officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were David Traynor, Dennis Traynor, Rex Kidd, Glenn Devine, Kevin Horn and Billy Horn.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gideon’s International Bible Fund or the American Cancer Relay for Life.

CLIFFORD LONG

Clifford Long, 80, of Harrodsburg, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008 at his residence.

Born Oct. 21, 1927 in Jessamine County, he was the son of the late James and Zanie Houp Long and was the widower of Betty Long.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, a retired Security Guard with KB Toys and was a member of the Christian Union Church in Burgin.

Survivors include: one son Jimmy (Joan) Long of Salvisa; one daughter, Trish (Lee Howard) Releford of Mercer County; two step sons, Johnnie Kirsch and Kieran (Denise) Kirsch; two step daughters, Daphnia (Rick) Johnson and Twana Kirsch; two grandsons, two granddaughters, six great grandchildren and several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. John Hockersmith officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Tim Darland, Chris Darland, Michael Young, Phillip Releford, Kevin Tyler, Rick Johnson and James Allen Hurt.

Visitation 5 – 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 7 a.m. Thursday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Heritage Hospice, P.O. Box 1213, Danville, KY 40423 and/or Gideon’s International, P.O. Box 176, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

KENNETH LONG

Kenneth Samuel Long, 87, Harrodsburg, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born May 4, 1921 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Harve Lee and Oma Phillips Long and was the widower of Dorothy Mae Tatum Long.

He was a retired shift supervisor at Kentucky Utilities and a member of the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: three daughters, Janis L. (Ron) Kratzwald and Susan (Clarence) Greene, both of Harrodsburg and Diane Long of Lexington; one sister, Genavie Reed of Danville and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Dudley Long and a sister, Doris McCrystal.

The funeral was held Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Ken Klemme officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ron Kratzwld, Clarance Greene, Scott Kratzwald, Kristen Kratzwald, Daniel Greene and Nicholas Greene.

Memorial contributions may be made to Harrodsburg United Methodist Church, 102 South Chiles Street, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

PEGGY RICHARDS

Peggy Lynn Richards of Harrodsburg, died Friday Aug. 8, 2008 at her residence.

Born in Dallas, TX, she was the daughter of the late Peggy Ruth Vaughn and the late Ray Coleman Bennett, Jr.

Survivors include: one son, James Helton of Shelbyville; one sister, LaFawn Barber; three nieces, one nephew, one great-niece, one great-nephew, one aunt and three cousins.

She was preceded in death by her stepfather, A. L. Vaughn.

No services are planned at this time.
