ANTHONY LEAVELL

Anthony Scott Leavell, 40, of Danville, departed this life on Friday August 22, 2008 after a long illness.

He was born October 25, 1967 in Boyle County.

He was formerly employed by the golf course and he loved to do landscaping.

Anthony leaves to cherish his memory: his mother, Elaine Leavell, Danville; his children, Antonio Lancaster, Danville, Zachary Brock, Harrodsburg, Marcarla Lancaster and Nikki Leavell, both of Danville, Tequeshon Henderson, step-daughter, Katie; great-aunt, Sophronia Reese, Danville; a special friend, Melinda Lancaster, Danville.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 27, at the Smith-Jackson Funeral Home in Danville with Rev. William Jenkins and Elder Charles Daugherty officiating.

DOLLY PURVIS

Dolly Purvis, 84, of Harrodsburg, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008 at her residence.

Born Aug. 19, 1924 in Casey County, she was the daughter of the late Ross and Lectie Lawhorn Patterson and was the wife of Fred Purvis,.

She was a homemaker and a member of Harrodsburg Christian Church.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: one son, Fred Purvis, Jr. of Campbellsville; one sister, Geneva Richardson of Liberty; one grand-daughter and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Marvin, Dexter and Domer Patterson and one sister, Makaree Divine.

The funeral was held Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with John David Lane officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Frank Preston, Leroy Patterson, Gary Patterson, Kenny Patterson, Jackie Lamb and Lorne Patterson.

DEVAN WALKER

DeVan B. Walker, 81, of Evans City, PA died Monday, Aug. 25, 2008 at his home.

Born Aug. 28, 1926 in Evans City, PA he was the son of the late Earl "Bud" and Bertha Yund Walker and was the husband of Ruth Strutt Walker.

He graduated from Evans City High School in 1944, served in the U.S. Navy from June 1944 to June 1946 where he was honorably discharged following WWII, attended engineering school at Geneva College and worked as a mechanical engineer for 39 years at Mathews Conveyor and Rexnord in Ellwood City, PA and Danville.

He served his churches in Evans City, PA, Harrodsburg, and recently Old Union Presbyterian Church in Mars, PA. He served as President of the Evans City Athletic Association and Evans City Rotary before his work transfer to Kentucky.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one daughter, Lynn (Richard) Meyers of Zelienople, PA; three sons, Van (Frances) Walker of Valencia, PA, Larry (Erin) Walker of Evans City, PA and Bruce Walker of Evans City, PA; two sisters, Beverly (Verle) Westerman of Evans City, PA and Shirley (Tom) Dunbar of Butler, PA; 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Grisinger.

Visitation will be held from 7–9 p.m. on Thursday and 2–4 p.m. and 7–9 p.m. on Friday at Boylan Funeral Home in Evans City, PA.

Boylan Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

MARY GIBSON

Mary Frances Gibson, 90, of Liberty, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 at the Liberty Care Center in Liberty.

Born June 20, 1918 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Butler Daniel and Viola Frances Hedges Phillips and was the widow of Earl Gibson.

She was a seamstress and former employee of Cricketeer Mfg. Co. and a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Judy (Kenneth) Roy of Liberty; one son, Earl Kenneth (Patti) Gibson of Hamilton, OH; one brother, Wesley Phillips of Harrodsburg; one daughter-in-law, Peggy Gibson of Harrodsburg; nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Danny Gibson and three sisters, Rose Lee Phillips, Ina Bea Watkins and Katherine Samples.

The funeral was held Sunday, Aug. 31 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with James Harley officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 176, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

J. W. MATTINGLY

J. W. Mattingly, 78, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008 at his residence.

Born June 4, 1930 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late James Samuel and Ruth Parrot Mattingly and was the widower of Evelyn Young Mattingly.

He was retired from Corning Glass and was an Elder at Harrodsburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include two sons, Jack (Kathy Smith) Mattingly and Steve (Rita) Mattingly, both of Harrodsburg; two brothers, Johnny (Julie) Mattingly and Charlie (Linda) Mattingly, both of Harrodsburg; three sisters, Mary Rose Quinn of Harrodsburg, Barbara Jackson of Panama City, FL and Betty (Robert) Trisler of Harrodsburg; two sisters in law, Nancy (Bronson) Yeast and Norma Martin, both of Harrodsburg, four granddaughters, twelve great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Hughes and Rev. Robert Barton officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jack Mattingly, Steve Mattingly, Scott Sheperson, Travis Stephens, Danny Rawlings, Shawn Brodeur, Charlie Mattingly and Terry Long.

Honorary pallbearers were his great grandchildren.

SHELBY MCAFEE

Shelby Jean Mattingly McAfee, 70, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 26, 1937 she was the daughter of the late Walter and Ruth Hargette Murphy and was the wife of Doug McAfee.

She had been an employee of Cricketeer for 32 years, Jonathan Logan for two years and then an employee of Matsushita. She was a member of Pioneer Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: four sons, John Derek (Julie) Mattingly, James W. (Lisa) Mattingly, Jerry Wayne (Rhonda) Mattingly and Jeffrey Neal (Valerie) Mattingly, all of Harrodsburg; one step-son, Dorsey (Vickie) McAfee of Lexington; two step-daughters, Patsy (Gary) Simmons of Jacksonville, FL and Betty Lunsford of Versailles; two brothers, Jack (Betty) Murphy and Bill (Reva) Murphy, both of Harrodsburg; five grandchildren; two-step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a half-brother, Bud Murphy.

The funeral was held Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008 at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Brian Burkhead and Ken Klemme officiating. Burial was in the Shawnee Run Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jerry Farmer, Brandon McAfee, D. J. McAfee, James Murphy, Tim Murphy, Justin Long, Curt Lewis and Clint Hunt.

Honorary pallbearers were Brian Murphy and Derek Mattingly.

WAYNE MERRIMAN

Wayne Merriman, 62, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

Born Dec. 16, 1945 in Piqua, OH, he was the son of the late James A. and Jesse Darland Merriman.

He was a Disabled Veteran of the U.S. Army where he served in the Vietname War and was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, D.A.V. and the V.F.W.

Survivors include: two daughters, Christine Klaess of Lebanon and Misty Stratton of Junction City; six brothers, Marion (Betty) Merriman and Robin (Jackie) Merriman, both of Harrodsburg, Charles (Linda) Merriman of Willisburg, Ronnie Merriman of Springfield, Gary Merriman of Cornishville and Larry Merriman of Willisburg; four sisters, Joyce Claunch, Doris Peggy Rice, Sheryl Merriman and Jackie Merriman, all of Harrodsburg; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. He was also survived by his lifelong friend, Carolyn Sue Brummett of Lebanon.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James D. Merriman and two sisters, Brenda Black and Pamela Merriman.

The funeral was held Monday, Sept. 1, 2008 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. George Hourigan officiating. Burial with military Honors was at Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were James Lewis, Dion Merriman, Larry Merriman, Jr., Kenneth Hicks, Cecil Wright and Timothy Norton.

Honorary pallbearers were Matthew Roby and Gregory Stratton.

GENAVIE REED

Genavie L. Reed, 92, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Sept. 13, 1915 in Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Harve L. and Oma Phillips Long and was the widow of Varnie Reed.

She was a retired Cricketeer Mfg. Co. employee and also worked at Shaker Village for several years. She was a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church, the Order of Eastern Star, Worthy Grand Matron Club and the Wilderness Trace Quilt Guild.

Survivors include: one daughter, Trudy R. Cavins of Lexington; one step-son, Hugh Reed of Sacramento, CA; eight grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a step-son, J. B. Reed, a sister, Doris McCrystal and two brothers, Kenneth and Dudley Long.

The funeral was held Tuesday, Sept. 2 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Dr. Robert DeFoor officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ron Kratzwald, Clarence Greene, Levi Reed, Maruice Long, Mauricie Reed and Danner Warren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 176, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

RICHARD SPARROW

Richard C. Sparrow, 77, of Lexington, formerly of Mercer County, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008.

Born in Lebanon, he was a son of the late James and Annabelle Pulliam Sparrow.

He had worked in maintenance and security at the Campbell House in Lexington.

Survivors include: a special companion, Rebecca Smith; three daughters, Martha Jean (Herbert) Caudill of Jessamine County and Mary Belle Sparrow and Kim (Richy) Lowery, both of Harrodsburg; two sons, W. T. Sparrow of Lexington and Richard (Debbie) Sparrow of Harrodsburg; one daughter-in-law, Connie Sparrow; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Sparrow, a brother, George Sparrow and a sister, Lidie Ellen Smothers.

Funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, 2008 at Milward-Southland with Bro. Jason Clark officiating. Entombment will be at Blue Grass Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers are Ricky Lee Sparrow, Casey Sparrow, Travis Sparrow, Dustin Sparrow, Seth Lowrey and Marshall Caudill.

Honorary pallbearers are Tony Blankenbeckley, Ralph Beadle, David Sparrow, Brad Chambliss and Earl Denny.

Visitation will be from 5–8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4 at Milwards, 391 Southland Dr. in Lexington.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or American Lung Association.

HAROLD TATE JR.

Harold Owen "Bubby" Tate Jr., 61, the husband of Jane Denson Tate, died Friday, August 29, 2008.

Born May 5, 1947, he was a son of the late Harold Owen Tate Sr. and Delpha Raley Tate.

Bubby was self employed as a painter with Tate and Son Painting. He was a member of a Baptist church, but enjoyed attending Bowen Fellowship, where his son pastors, and Perryville Church Of God.

Besides his family, one of his great loves was restoring and renovating older homes. He also loved fishing, when time allowed.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: one son, Mark (Lena) Tate of Bradfordsville; two daughters, Michelle (Kenny) Hill of Danville and Rhonda (Scott) Holloway of Stanford; four sisters, Patricia (Leonard) Chumbley of Harrodsburg, Shirley (Johnny) Hourigan of Gravel Switch, Nettie (Eddie) Elliott of MS and Darlene (Larry) Shearer of Danville; three grandchildren, Todd Lane, Amber Mullins and Sarah Grace Tate; and three great-grandchildren, Brysten and Bryllie Lane, and Dakota Mullins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, at the Perryville Church Of God by Rev. Buddy Turpin. Burial will be in Parksville Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be from 5-9 p.m. Monday and after 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Wilder Funeral Home. There also will be a visitation after 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Danny Bright, Roger Followell, Gary and Tim Denson, Larry Hill and Pete Wofford.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of Perryville Church Of God and Bowen Fellowship.

Expressions of sympathy are suggested to Relay for Life.
